Wine Description
Crafted from both mountain and valley floor grapes, this beautifully rich and complex wine offers alluring aromas of huckleberry, cardamom, graham cracker, dark chocolate and violets. On the palate, juicy flavors of ripe boysenberry and black tea glide across finely textured tannins, with bright, balanced acidity contributing to a long, elegant finish.

Rickey Brown –
’85 Cabs at Amis du Vin tasting lacked interest.
Donald Howard –
Balanced and fruity ’86 red with a lingering finish. Plenty of tannin for aging. 90/100.
Jennifer Fields –
LWB with MPL: Dark magenta. Deep, firm yet ripe fruit in the nose. Great on the palate–wow. Tannic but drinkable with loads of fruit. Rich. 90/100.
Lynn Neely –
A dense wine with ripe cherry and berry flavors, heavy oak, and a long finish. The tannins are tight and aggressive, making it hard to drink on its own.
Judith Steege –
Smooth, balanced and easy to drink Cab blend (87% Cab, 12% Merlot, 0.5% Cab Franc, 0.5% Petit Verdot) with fresh fruit and moderate tannins. Needs more time in the cellar to reach its full potential.
John Andrews –
Outstanding quality, price, and age. Fragrant black fruit nose with integrated oak. Delicious and worth buying more.
Jeffrey Rogers –
Full-bodied with ripe tannins and a creamy texture. Bursting with ripe fruit and balanced sweetness, finishing with a slightly smoky note.
Angela Cummings –
Smooth and ready to drink with nice cab fruit flavors.
Frank Fortune –
Duckhorn’s Napa Valley wine offers an earthy attack with fresh red cherry, black currant, and blackberry midpalate. The vanilla is a bit heavy and overdone with the oak, but it’s a well-made, solid wine. However, it lacks complexity and isn’t worth the $75 price tag. Goes well with grilled steak.
Daniel Rhodarmer –
Rich ruby color with an intense aroma of black fruit, berries, black pepper, vanilla, butter, and biscuit. The taste is bold with high tannins, acidity, and alcohol. A long-lasting taste of black fruits, vanilla, and biscuit.
Joan Halfmann –
Timeless. Enjoy now or age longer.
Aaron Reese –
Aged 10 years, needs decanting, but has a lovely finish. Beware of sharing with greedy family and friends.
Claudia Hildreth –
Average, not remarkable. I prefer Duckhorn Merlot.
Maryann Hardman –
Great value wines with good balance, but lacking complexity.
James Rodriguez –
We enjoyed it.
Carolina Wade –
Dark fruit, oak, dark chocolate on the nose. Plum, blueberry, vanilla, baking spice on the palate. Buttery mouthfeel, long finish. Best paired with beef tournedos.
David Bradley –
Full-bodied with ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums, hints of cocoa, spices & oak. Smooth texture with a lingering finish.
Gary Ahner –
Wine is corked.
Adeline Bean –
Smooth, great flavor. Aged perfectly for 8 years. No deterioration.
Tammy Becker –
92 pts possible. Initially lean and acidic, but improved over time. Red fruit, high acidity, and no signs of being past its prime. Great value at $90 from K&L.
Nichol Snelson –
Full and fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas with notes of cedar, earthy/dusty notes, cocoa, mint, pepper, tobacco, leather, minerals, spices, and a hint of vanilla/oak. Medium-full bodied with a well-balanced and smooth texture. Lingering smooth finish.
Leigha Ragan –
Great.
Brian Levy –
Subpar wine, thin and lacking robustness. Price doesn’t justify quality.
Gary Jarrell –
Young. Dark berries, cedar, cassis on the nose. Oak, vanilla, and grass on the palate.
Brittany Lukach –
Wine Spectator rates it 90 pts.
Jane Whittemore –
This wine is a masterpiece. Drink it now.
Mae Mcdonald –
Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London) features ripe blackcurrant, cedar, sweet spice, tight unyielding tannins, and alcohol warmth.
Maria Nishimura –
Mellowed with good depth, drinking nicely.
Phillip Murdock –
Enjoyable cab with subdued tannins, lacking complexity but not fruit forward.
Myrtle Collins –
Suzanne is a great wine, highly recommended.
Lloyd Webb –
Wine was enjoyed at family event, no formal notes.
Maureen Alexander –
Dark ruby with black cherry, blackcurrant, mint, and menthol notes. Sweet blackcurrant, spice, and caramel richness with a hint of heat and grip.
Tina Jones –
Excellent aged Duckhorn with exceptional aging potential of another 10 years.
James Leardi –
Lovely after some time and pairs well with dinner.
Mark Leon –
Smooth Cab blend, great with beef or on its own.
Belen Hill –
2012 Cabernet Sauvignon – Canoehead Central: Complex bouquet of spice, wood, and dark red fruits. Sweet-ish with low acid and a sour finish. Finished fifth overall.
Jose Hertzler –
Peppery with Indian spice on the nose. Stewed fruit taste which isn’t pleasant. Sweet but in a strange way. Tannins are grainy. Medium finish. Needs more aging. Scored 81 but wouldn’t pay more than 60.
Dustin Atchley –
Drink now until 2024/6. Terrific.
Jamie Holben –
Delicious fruit with balanced tannins and acids. Required 2-3 hours to open up.
Robert Guerrero –
Decent blackberry aroma with a hint of bell peppers. Medium-plus tannins and acidity. Okay wine.
Jennifer Macauley –
1990 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon – still drinkable after 30 years. Great flavors. Perfect for New Year’s Eve party.
Kermit Adams –
Great.
John Mcwaters –
Full-bodied dark fruit with mild tannins, a crowd-pleaser worth $40-ish.
Manuel Pratt –

Betty Her –
Average wine, better options available at a lower cost.
Kenny Sherling –
Balanced acidity and tannin with a hint of green. Best to hold a bit longer.
Ryan Pierce –
1978 California Cabernet: Port-like with dark berries, fresh palate and pleasant acidity. Enjoyable.
Rachel Valdes –
1978 California wines at Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich were surprisingly high quality with primary fruit left, but a broad range with some showing signs of fatigue. Top wines were Phelps Cab Sauv (97), Firestone Cab Sauv (95), and Beaulieu George de Latour Private Reserve (95). Tasting note: Limited expression, low intensity, dark berries with tertiary notes and Asian spice. Palate had a nice tobacco feature, but structure has disappeared leaving only acidity.
Lena From –
This wine has a deep, dark color and a strong, complex aroma of ripe fruits with hints of cocoa, coffee, and spices. It has a medium-full body and a smooth finish. It is currently drinking well but is nearing its peak at 16 years old.
Brittney Lizarraga –
Strong and pleasant wine with a nice finish. Perfectly paired with steak.
Melissa Hirko –
Balanced and structured with blackberry, oak, and dark fruit palate. Low-medium acidity with a tart cherry finish. Similar to Pensfold Bin 704 but overpriced.
Ralph Brinkley –
“Duckhorn wins blind tasting against Heitz and Jordan.”
Amanda Dicks –
Sorry, but I cannot provide a review for “Sandy’s 60th!” as it is not clear what it is referring to. Please provide more context or details for me to work with.
Carol Brown –
California 1978: High-quality wines with impressive fruit remaining, ready to drink with melted tannins and freshness. Mineral accents, less ripeness than current Napa wines, and style unique from Bordeaux. Best reds: Inglenook Limited Cask, Beaulieu GDL Reserve, Stags Leap Cask 23 4.5l, Heitz Bella Oaks, Simi Reserve, Stag’s Leap Cask 23 0.75l. The Late Harvest Riesling from Phelps is the best wine (98pts).
Jody Salazar –
Rich and powerful, yet easy to drink. Notes of black currants, new French oak, blackberries, and cherries. Delicious and fully mature. Drink now-2027. 93.
Robert Mathewson –
Needs 3-hour decant to open up. Exciting aging potential.
Anthony Manthe –
Overpowering licorice taste, unable to finish after first glass. Finishes with a subtle touch.
Carlyn Maynard –
“Great color and flavor, paired well with steak at local restaurant.”
Hannah Ferrel –
Mature CA cab with dried fruits, sandalwood, and cedar. At peak a few years ago, not developing further.
Rochelle Slager –
Better than newer Duckhorn cabs. Would drink again, has aging potential.
Maxine Prater –
Never Received
Jane Hall –
Good wine, enjoyed over two nights. Notes of tobacco, dark fruit, and burnt toast on night two. Cheers.
Amanda Knickerbocker –
Balanced Cali Cab.
Michael Sellers –
Flawed.
Ella Aune –
Smooth wine with no aftertaste.
Jeffrey Brown –
Smooth and delicious with no aftertaste.
Anthony Tarver –
Solid Napa cab, fruity with black cherry and blackberry notes. Menthol on the nose. Decent price.
Raymond Hopkins –
Young Napa Cab with black currants, dark cherries, medium acidity and tannins. Oaky finish with veggie notes, a bit hot on the alcohol.
Dustin Mack –
No cork taint. Enjoyable now.
Phyllis Johnson –
Canvasback and Decoy limited tasted better than the oddly fake-y wine.
Rickey Estrada –
Dark ruby in color with some clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of mature, ripe red fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & plums with overtones of tobacco & cedar notes, earthy/dusty notes, leather, spices, mint, cocoa/coffee & a slight hint of oak/vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, mature, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums, spices, herbs, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present but at 42 years of age it appears to be at its peak of development, so please drink up! Fill was in lower neck; cork was stained 1/3 up but intact.
Jeremy Anderson –
Great storage helped this wine hold up surprisingly well beyond its drinking window.
David Bierman –
Deep garnet color with a fragrant nose of ripe cherries, blueberries, and plums. Notes of earthy spices, leather, and tobacco add complexity. Medium-full bodied with well-balanced fruit flavors, herbs, and oak undertones. Lingering smooth finish.
Kathy Barfield –
Approachable yet complex, the 2020 Duckhorn has no flaws and boasts a juicy palate of red currant, blackberry, and cedar.
Frank Bayas –
Decent Napa Cab, but slightly green taste.
