The Calera Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard 2017 is a stunning representation of the exceptional terroir of Calera’s Mt. Harlan Vineyards, situated in the cool Gavilan Mountains near Monterey Bay. Winemaker Mike Waller’s expertise shines through in this 100% Pinot Noir, crafted to perfection with 17 months of aging in 100% French oak barrels, of which 30% are new.

Upon tasting, the wine unfolds with layers of complexity and depth. Dark cherry, cola, and black licorice dance gracefully across the palate, complemented by soft, round tannins that create a luxurious mouthfeel. The flavors continue to evolve, revealing notes of sweet earth, vibrant rose petals, and crushed rock, adding an ethereal and hedonistic quality to the overall experience.

6 reviews for Calera Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard 2017

    1. WE

Baked cherry, star anise, clove and chai elements show on the ripe and spicy nose of this bottling, which was harvested after this vintage’s huge Labor Day heat spike. The wine is rich, heavy and layered on the palate, with black plum flavors coated in cardamom and sagebrush.

    2. WA

The 2017 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard, aged 17 months in 30% new French oak, has a pale to medium ruby-purple color and is youthful and shy to begin. With coaxing, aromas of prosciutto, wild blackberries, lemon peel and redcurrants emerge, with nuances of oolong tea leaves and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, it’s broody and earthy with lifted citrusy accents in the mouth, a finely grained frame and juicy freshness on the finish.

    3. JD

Lots of dried herbs, leather, redcurrants, and a touch of sassafras emerge from the medium-bodied 2017 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard. With a rounded, elegant texture, beautiful acidity, and a terrific, lengthy finish, it opens up nicely with time in the glass and is just a complex, nuanced beauty to enjoy over the coming decade.

    4. TSJ

Aromas and flavors of sweet earth and vibrant rose petals open this ethereal red. Jasmine takes shape with underlying notes of crushed rock and sugared beets. Hedonistic as it is, it gradually gentles, paving the way for the elegant finish.

    5. VIN

The 2017 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard is laced with the essence of sweet red berry, cinnamon, orange peel, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium in body, with striking inner perfume and impeccable balance, the 2017 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. The Ryan emerges from the highest-altitude parcel on the property.

    6. WAS

Ryan is among the highest of the parcels on the property, planted in 1989. In 2017, its wine is lean and vinous, redolent of smoke and forest floor, the fruit sensuous and alluring, dark and plummy, with a demonstrative ripeness that remains elegant, acid-driven and energetic.

Nestled in the picturesque region of Mt Harlan in California's San Benito County, the Calera Wine Company stands as a testament to the remarkable potential of limestone-rich soils in winemaking. Established in 1974, this esteemed wine estate owes its existence to the vision of winemaker Josh Jensen. After training in the revered wine region of Burgundy, Jensen learned the significance of limestone soils for producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Inspired by this knowledge, he embarked on a quest to find the perfect terroir upon returning to the US. Jensen's search led him to Mt Harlan, where he purchased land that had once been a limestone quarry. In 1975, he planted 10 hectares (24 acres) of Pinot Noir, with the first vintage from the vineyard debuting in 1978. Over the...check our brand Calera Wine Company
