Roussanne Description
Roussanne, a white-wine grape known for its reddish-gold skin color when fully ripe, derives its name from the French word “roux,” meaning “russet” or reddish-brown. Originating in the northern Rhône Valley of France, most of its plantings can still be found in this region today. Roussanne is frequently blended with Marsanne to create the renowned white wine blends of the northern Rhône, such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph, as well as in sparkling wines from Saint-Péray. In the southern Rhône Valley, it is also used in small quantities in both red and white wines, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The grape thrives in warmer climates with ample sunlight, making the southern Rhône Valley ideal for its growth. In cooler climates, Roussanne may struggle to ripen fully and is considered a challenging variety to cultivate. Moreover, it is susceptible to rot, powdery mildew, and wind damage, making careful vineyard management essential.
When it comes to winemaking, Roussanne is quite versatile, and winemakers can blend and manipulate it to create complex and prestigious wines. Notably, the Château Beaucastel’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes is an outstanding example of a 100-percent Roussanne wine. In California, cult producer Sine Qua Non also produces high-quality Roussanne wines in the Central Coast.
Roussanne wines are characterized by herbal and tea-like aromas. On the palate, they typically exhibit flavors of pears and honey with notable intensity. Depending on the harvesting time, the acidity can be high if picked under-ripe, while leaving the grapes on the vine for too long can lead to alcohol levels exceeding 14 percent. When blended with Marsanne, Roussanne imparts aromatic intensity that complements the richness and body of its counterpart.
