Cinsault - Grenache -Mourvedre Description
Cinsault – Grenache – Mourvèdre, often referred to as the “CGM blend,” is a classic and iconic blend of grape varieties that finds its origins in the southern regions of France, notably in Bandol. While this blend is synonymous with Bandol, it is also cultivated and celebrated throughout southern France and even extends beyond French borders.
The CGM blend typically consists of three main grape varieties: Mourvèdre takes the lead role, making up the majority of the blend (between 50 and 95 percent in Bandol reds), while Grenache and Cinsault play supporting roles. Occasionally, Carignan and Syrah can make appearances but are limited to no more than 10 percent.
The resulting wines from the CGM blend are characterized by their distinctive flavor profile. These wines often exhibit a robust and structured character, with Cinsault’s rustic tannins providing a counterbalance to Grenache’s softer fruit notes. The primary fruit flavors that shine through in these wines are classic raspberry and strawberry, creating a delightful interplay between fruitiness and earthiness.
In the case of dry red wines produced from this trio of grapes, you can expect depth and sometimes hints of herbal notes. On the other hand, CGM rosé wines are known for their fullness and richness, beautifully balanced by acidity. Mourvèdre and Cinsault impart leather and gamey notes to the blend, while Grenache contributes rich and luscious fruit characters.
The climatic conditions and soil profiles in regions where these grapes thrive play a pivotal role in the quality and character of the CGM blend. These grapes are particularly suited to hot climates, making them well-suited to regions along France’s Mediterranean coast. The warmth and ample sunshine in these areas allow these grapes to reach optimal ripeness.
While Bandol is the epicenter of the CGM blend, the trio of grapes is also prevalent in other notable wine regions in southern France, including Provence and the Languedoc. The Mediterranean climate and well-suited soils in these areas provide the ideal conditions for these grape varieties to flourish.
Additionally, the CGM blend has made its mark in North African and Middle Eastern winemaking, where the grapes’ preference for hot climates can be fully realized. This blend’s versatility and ability to adapt to various terroirs have contributed to its popularity not only in France but also on the global wine stage.
