Cabernet Sauvignon - Merlot Description
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, two iconic grape varieties, are the heart and soul of many exceptional wines. This classic blend, often referred to as the “Bordeaux Blend,” has its roots in the Bordeaux region of France, where it is believed to have originated. However, these grapes have spread their influence to various wine regions worldwide, each adding its own unique character to the blend.
The choice of regions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes is vital, as climatic conditions and soil profiles significantly impact the quality of the wine. Bordeaux’s moderate maritime climate with influences from the Atlantic Ocean provides the ideal conditions for these grapes. The gravelly soils in Bordeaux offer excellent drainage, which encourages the vines to dig deep for water, resulting in more concentrated flavors in the grapes.
Outside Bordeaux, regions such as Coonawarra, Margaret River, and Yarra Valley in Australia are known for their unique expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot blends. California produces exceptional examples, often labeled as Meritage, and South Africa’s Stellenbosch region offers wines that defy conventional New World perceptions.
Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure to the blend, characterized by robust tannins and bright acidity. It imparts flavors of blackcurrant and a hint of bell pepper. In contrast, Merlot is considered the softer, juicier grape variety, with plumper berries and a lower skin-to-juice ratio. This combination results in a wine that balances the structural elements of Cabernet Sauvignon with the generous fruitiness of Merlot.
Barrel aging is common for Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot blends, enhancing the wine with cedar, smoke, and spice notes from French oak, as well as sweeter aromas of vanilla and coconut from American oak.
While Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the primary components, other Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere are sometimes added to create complex, multi-faceted wines.
The wines produced from this blend can be diverse, ranging from lean to generous, austere to fruity, and capable of both short-term and long-term aging. They span a wide price range, from affordable table wines to some of the world’s most exclusive and expensive offerings. Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot wines are a testament to the harmonious marriage of these two noble grapes, and their ability to flourish in diverse regions around the world, each adding its unique character to this classic blend.
