Far Niente

Far Niente, nestled in the heart of Oakville, California, has been a symbol of winemaking excellence since its founding in 1885 by John Benson, a California gold rush forty-niner and uncle to the renowned American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer. The winery, crafted in collaboration with architect Hamden McIntyre, was envisioned as an exquisite oasis in western Oakville.

Though the Prohibition era closed its gates in 1919, the magic of Far Niente never truly disappeared. Sixty years later, the winery was reborn through the passion of Gil Nickel, who lovingly restored the estate and neighboring vineyards. This restoration, a three-year labor of love, placed Far Niente on the National Register of Historic Places and preserved the winery’s name, which romantically translates to “without a care” in Italian.

Far Niente remains an iconic producer of Napa Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, known for its time-honored winemaking traditions. The estate’s 13 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, adorned with vibrant southern azaleas, offer one of Napa Valley’s most enchanting views.

Additionally, the historic wine caves, constructed after the end of Prohibition, are a testament to Far Niente’s dedication to excellence. These caves, the first constructed in North America since the early 1900s, house a treasure trove of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vintages aging gracefully in French oak.
