Chateau Lafleur

Chateau Lafleur, situated in the Pomerol appellation on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, is a cherished gem in the world of winemaking. With its modest 4.5 hectares (11 acres) of vineyards, this family-run estate has been crafting wines of unparalleled quality for over a century.

Founded in 1872 when Henri Greloud acquired the property, Chateau Lafleur remains in the capable hands of his great-great-grandchildren, Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau. The estate’s flagship wine, Chateau Lafleur, is a masterful blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, renowned for its rich concentration, creamy texture, intense black fruits, and captivating spice notes. It’s a wine with remarkable structure, often requiring more aging than its peers in the Pomerol appellation, and can gracefully mature for up to half a century.

Lafleur’s vineyards sit atop deep layers of gravel on the edge of the Pomerol plateau, neighboring the esteemed La Fleur-Pétrus estate. The vines are evenly split between Merlot and Bouchet (the local name for Cabernet Franc), with the latter contributing significantly to the wine’s aging potential. Yields are characteristically low, even by Pomerol standards, ensuring the utmost quality.

The estate also boasts several distinct vineyards within its portfolio. Pensées de Lafleur, once considered a second wine, now stands as a separate entity with its unique soil composition. Chateau Grand Village, founded in 1650, produces Bordeaux Supérieur wines that align closely with Lafleur’s vineyard practices. Chateau Grand Village Blanc, introduced in the early 1990s, showcases Sauvignon Blanc’s potential on clay-rich Fronsac soils.

Les Perrieres, a red wine from the Fronsac region, and Les Champs Libres, a Sauvignon Blanc white wine, further demonstrate Chateau Lafleur’s commitment to excellence and innovation. With each bottle they produce, Chateau Lafleur upholds its reputation as a beacon of exceptional winemaking in the heart of Bordeaux.
