Castalia Description
Nestled in the heart of Sonoma County, Castalia Wines stands as a beacon of excellence, celebrated for its exquisite boutique Pinot Noir vintages. Founded by Terry Bering in 1992, the winery has a rich history steeped in winemaking expertise. Bering’s passion for crafting exceptional Pinot Noir dates back to 1985 when he started as a home winemaker, and his subsequent employment at Rochioli Winery since 1990 further honed his skills.
The soul of Castalia Wines lies in the famed Rochioli vineyards. The Flad Vineyard, adorned with West Block Clone vines from the late 1980s, and the River Block, hosting the same clone, impart a unique character to the wines. Additionally, Dejon clones 777, 115, and 667 from multiple vineyards contribute to the complexity.
Castalia’s commitment to quality is underscored by meticulous farming practices. The 2020 vintage, producing 200 cases, spent 15 months maturing in oak, 25% of which was new French oak. This meticulous process grants the wine a softness that resonates upon release.
True to its heritage, Castalia’s Pinot Noir boasts a full-bodied complexity and subtle cherry essence, emblematic of the finest Russian River Pinot Noirs. The wine’s exceptional reputation is evident through its presence in esteemed Bay Area restaurants. As Castalia Wines opens its doors to enthusiasts, Bering’s limited release promises to captivate palates, offering a glimpse into the artistry behind this exceptional Pinot Noir.
