Canvasback

Canvasback, founded in 2011, is a distinguished winery that has earned its reputation by creating wines of exceptional complexity and allure. Located in Washington State, Canvasback follows the time-honored model established by Duckhorn Vineyards, combining grapes from esteemed growers with fruit from its own estate vineyard.

The winery’s journey began in 2011 when, after extensive blind tastings, they recognized the outstanding quality of Washington State’s Cabernet Sauvignons, particularly those from the revered Red Mountain appellation. Partnering with renowned Washington vineyard manager Dick Boushey, they cultivated relationships with esteemed vineyard growers.

In 2012, Canvasback unveiled its debut vintage of Red Mountain Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from some of the region’s most acclaimed vineyards, including Klipsun, La Coye, Shaw, and Quintessence.

By 2014, Canvasback had named Washington native Brian Rudin as their winemaker, and they acquired a coveted unplanted 20-acre vineyard site on Red Mountain. They released their first Canvasback Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and crafted their inaugural Canvasback Grand Passage Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winery continued to thrive, establishing the Longwinds Estate Vineyard and releasing their highly anticipated 2014 Canvasback Grand Passage Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2019, Canvasback expanded its portfolio beyond Red Mountain to include Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot, and Riesling from renowned appellations in Washington State. They also opened a dedicated tasting room in Walla Walla, showcasing their exceptional wines in an idyllic setting.

Canvasback’s journey continues in 2023 with winemaker Joseph Czarny, who brings his vineyard-focused expertise to evolve the winery’s acclaimed portfolio, further capturing the diverse terroir-driven essence of Washington winemaking. Canvasback’s commitment to excellence and their exploration of Washington’s finest vineyards make them a notable presence in the world of wine.
