Clos St Hune 2016, a mesmerizing white wine crafted by the esteemed Maison Trimbach, hails from the exclusive Clos Sainte Hune vineyard in Alsace, France. With winemaker Pierre Trimbach at the helm, this Trimbach Riesling embodies the essence of its prestigious origin, the Clos Ste. Hune region, renowned for its unique terroir and limited production. A mere 7000 bottles are produced annually, making it a rare gem sought after by wine lovers globally.

The 2016 vintage is a testament to the vineyard’s legacy, showcasing an alcohol content of 13.00% ABV. It presents an ethereal palette of aromas, blending slices of apple and pear with hints of mineral, flowers, and honeysuckle. This full-bodied Riesling impresses with its tight, dense structure, diving deep into a realm of beauty complemented by bright, tangy acidity. Its depth rivals that of a grand cru Burgundy, yet it remains unmistakably Clos Ste. Hune in character.

A stroll through the vineyard reveals vines basking in the south and southeast exposure, thriving on a limestone-rich soil that infuses the wine with a specific fragrance and a remarkable fruit concentration. This foundation contributes to the wine’s refined minerality and incredible length, hallmark traits of Clos Sainte Hune that emerge beautifully with age.

As we delve into the critical acclaims, Clos St Hune 2016 has captivated experts, garnering high praise and exceptional scores. Wine Spectator celebrates its chiseled profile, ripe fruit, and precise minerality, awarding it 95 points. James Suckling and Vinous are equally enchanted, offering 98 points each for its compact fruit, mineral essence, and mesmerizing beauty. Wine & Spirits highlight its clean energy and evolving taste profile, with a score of 96 points. Lastly, John Gilman admires its classic bouquet and stunning vintage quality, rating it 97 points.

Clos St Hune is not just a wine; it’s an experience, marked by its exceptional aging potential and distinctive character. Its refined elegance and pronounced minerality make it a dream for any wine aficionado. As noted by Serge Dubs, the sensation of minerality dominates, encapsulating the essence of this high-class dry wine.

In summary, Clos St Hune 2016 stands as a pinnacle of Trimbach Riesling, reflecting the skill of winemaker Pierre Trimbach and the vineyard’s over two-century legacy. Its scarcity and exceptional quality make it a coveted treasure, offering a transcendent experience that speaks to the heart of Alsace’s winemaking tradition. This wine not only captivates the palate but also promises to inspire and delight for years to come.

A chiseled white, deftly knitting a lovely range of ripe nectarine and plum fruit, Meyer lemon peel and fresh rosemary notes with laserlike acidity and a rich undertow of petrol and brine. It’s finely detailed and lightly chalky in texture, with the juicy fruit and mineral notes returning to echo on the finish. This is a pleasure right now but will continue to shine over time. Drink now through 2036.

Luminous straw. Penetrating nuances of lime and guava join the lemon verbena, jasmine, mineral and white stone fruit aromas on the knockout, captivating nose. Then dense, complex and multilayered, offering profound flavors of fresh citrus fruit, sweet spices and talcum powder. Closes extremely long, clean and precise; this is a young white wine of utterly mesmerizing beauty. I find this to be one of the best young CSHs I have ever tasted; it is stylistically different but almost on the same quality level as the marvelous 2010 CSH. One sniff (never mind taste) and I was left almost speechless - and I’m not usually one who keeps his mouth shut when I recognize a truly great wine.

The 4.12 acres of Clos Ste. Hune, within the Rosacker grand cru, have been in the Trimbach family for more than 200 years. The parcel faces south-southeast on limestone subsoils and it is widely regarded as one of the great vineyards of the world, not only for the finesse and power of its wines, but also for their longevity. The riesling vines, averaging 50 years of age, produced a 2016 that runs on clean energy, starting from the first taste that immediately brings a tingle on the tongue—nothing to do with volatility, but rather a bulwark of freshness that hides any sense of weight in the wine. You can almost feel the fruit coming into ripeness as each taste develops in your mouth, from underripe apricot to fuller yellow plum and a tense, herbal savor. This is a cellar-worthy wine that manages to be sexy as well.

Outer quote mark Here in the United States, Clos Ste. Hune used to be something of an “insider’s wine” and I used to be able to sell a fairly significant number of cases of this wine back in my wine merchant days. Given the fact that only about seven thousand bottles are made in most vintages, it was pretty remarkable that I could get ten to fifteen cases of this wine in most vintages (twelve bottle cases back in those days), and sometimes I could also offer several back vintages as well! It is a lot harder to source this wine these days, as the world now fully understands just how special it is, but at least the superb quality has not changed at all from those good old days! The 2016 Clos Ste. Hune comes in at an even thirteen percent octane and offers up a pure, classic bouquet of green fruit, apple, petrol, a kaleidoscopic base of limestone minerality, citrus peel, just a whisper of fresh-culled mint and a topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is precise, deep and full, with a rock solid core of fruit, stunning mineral drive and grip, zesty acids and great length and grip on the beautifully balanced and very complex finish. This is a simply stunning vintage of Clos Ste. Hune! 2025-2065
