Crafted by the esteemed winemaker Jeffrey Patterson, the Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay 2018 is a testament to the delicate balance between nature’s whims and the winemaker’s artistry. Set against the backdrop of a drought year in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this wine encapsulates the essence of a long, gentle growing season that yielded a harvest brimming with character.

In the glass, the Chardonnay reveals a pale golden hue that catches the light like a sunlit morning. The bouquet dances with youthful elegance, exuding notes of gardenia blossom, lime zest, and a hint of hazelnut. This wine transports you to an orchard in full bloom, inviting you to explore its nuanced aromas.

On the palate, a beautiful restraint unfolds, revealing a symphony of flavors. The persistence of lemon, harmoniously interwoven with oak nuances, takes center stage. The wine’s intriguing minerality adds depth, evoking memories of mountain streams and ancient soils. With its Old World charm, this vintage holds the promise of gracefully aging for two decades, its terroir-driven character evolving over time.

Praised by critics, the 2018 Chardonnay earns its accolades. Wine Spectator awards it 91 points for its luscious, creamy texture and ripe fruit flavors, underscored by sage honey nuances. Wine Enthusiast grants it an impressive 94 points, celebrating its lively acidity and toasty, nuanced palate. Jeb Dunnuck rates it 93 points, hailing its honeyed citrus, nectarine, and stone notes, all impeccably balanced. Vinous awards it a stellar 95 points, applauding its richness and energy, suggesting it will evolve splendidly in the coming years.

In every sip of Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay 2018, you experience a sensory journey through the terroir of the Santa Cruz Mountains, a journey both timeless and captivating.

    1. WS

There’s a luscious and creamy texture to the concentrated ripe apple, pear and quince flavors that are filled with cooking spice accents. Ends with sage honey nuances on the rich finish. Drink now through 2024. 1,288 cases made.

    2. WE

Honeyed nut, tangerine peel and baked apple aromas show on the nose of this bottling. A zesty acidity enlivens the palate from front to back, carrying toasty flavors of pan-seared apple, cashew, sea salt and white flower.

    3. JD

A Burgundy lover’s Chardonnay from the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2018 Chardonnay Estate is another terrific effort from this estate. Lots of honeyed citrus, nectarine, toast, crushed stone, and white flower notes define the bouquet, and it opens beautifully with time in the glass, gaining both richness and complexity. Medium-bodied, it stays tight and compact on the palate, with bright yet integrated acidity, solid mid-palate depth, and a great finish. As with all of Patterson’s wines, it’s brilliantly made, balanced, and well worth checking out.

    4. VIN

Mount Eden’s 2018 Chardonnay offers a fabulous interplay of richness and energy. A wine of linear intensity, the 2018 could use a few more years in bottle to be at its best, but it is super impressive, even now, in what is very clearly the early going. Lemon confit, mint, orange peel, spice and light butter notes all build into the articulate, polished finish. This is such a classy wine. Give it a few years to come together. Drinking Window 2024-2033.

    5. WAS

Mount Eden’s chardonnay vines—descended from cuttings that Paul Masson brought from Burgundy around 1900—grow a powerful, earthy white with structure to spare. Fermented in French oak barrels (50 percent new), this is smoky and savory, with a refreshing lemony cut that should serve it well through several years of bottle aging.

The history of the Santa Cruz Mountains wine region is one of perseverance and innovation. With a storied past dating back to the 1880s, this mountainous AVA has defied the odds to become one of California's most celebrated winemaking areas. Pioneering vignerons, led by Osea Perrone of Ridge Vineyards, braved the challenging terroir, setting the stage for the region's viticultural legacy. Despite a setback during the Prohibition era, viticulture resurged in the 1940s, eventually leading to the AVA's official recognition in 1981.
