Matthiasson Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2020 is sourced from six organic vineyards across three different AVAs’”Coombsville, Rutherford, and Oak Knoll’”to create a Napa cabernet of the old school. The blend is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, achieving complexity and balance with the help of winemaker Steve Matthiasson and his sustainable practices.

The dry conditions of 2020 provided the opportunity for some powerful, age-worthy wines, and the fortunate wind patterns prevented smoke from the destructive fires that season from damaging the vineyards. The resulting harvest was fermented in small tanks and pressed at dryness, then aged for 20 months in mostly used French oak.

The nose is abundant with dark and red fruits, such as cherry, blackberry, cranberry, and mulberry, grounded with herbal and mineral notes of graphite, cedar, and pencil shavings. The palate is vibrant and fresh, boasting tannin and acidity that make decanting highly recommended. Only 1926 cases were produced.

Matthiasson Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2020 is a balanced and complex wine that showcases Steve Matthiasson’s precise and sustainable winemaking style. With its vibrant aromas and rich flavors, this bottle will age gracefully for years to come.

    1. Claudette Wright

Matthiasson’s wine is complex and obscure with a dry aroma of chocolate, chili, and blackberry pie crust. The intense fruit core is balanced out by electric cables of acid and a sweet rigid tannic base. It’s a unique blend of California and French wine, rating at 93.

    2. Kenneth Lott

Deep fruit core with firm tannins, balanced acidity. Perfect with prime ribeye. Score: 92.

    3. Shirley Kallevig

Pure and dense with red fruit and cedary quality. A cool note of fresh green tobacco and herb. Listed at 13.1%.

    4. Tina Swalley

Beautifully refreshing with a great palate structure.

    5. Abby Abney

Spicy with good fruit, full-bodied and young. Score: 89-90.

    6. Carol Carvajal

Beautiful, deep wine with bright fruit and a fine finish.

    7. Jerri Foster

Matthiasson is delicious, with a great pyrzine taste.

    8. Steven Hedgepeth

“Killer red with soft fruit, earthy tones. Medium-bodied and medium acidity.”

    9. Gloria Corn

Full-bodied with a medium acidity. Flavors of black cherry, blueberry, plum, and ash with a nice minty backbite. Stalwart structure, needs 5 years to soften.

    10. Bailey Luppino

Review: Bright red and dark ripe fruits with tarry notes, earthiness, and floral tones. Medium body, lively acidity, well-balanced finish.

    11. Mark Sandling

      Plump and delightful.

    12. Richard Toth

Lighter alcohol, good tannins, and acidity to compliment steak. Tart berry flavor.

    13. Benjamin Outlaw

Youthful and fruit forward with cherry notes and mineral undertones. Good structure with well-integrated tannins after slow ox. Second bottle should be saved for 2-4 years.

    14. Arthur Bird

Cab with medium body, soft tannins, balanced fruit presence, and a subtle finish.

    15. Laura Hicks

Great wine, perfect after 2 hours of oxidation. Tannins are well-structured to complement a good steak. Excellent secondary palate.

    16. Bonita Bush

Review: Aromas of dark cherry and dust. Touch of Merlot, 20% new and the rest neutral. Bottle two has more black fruit and raspberry. Insanely pretty.

    17. Anna Ritchey

Fresh red fruit with a focused and tight taste. Slightly stiff in a positive manner.

    18. Kim Wright

      Green with pretty touch.

    19. Meta Stewart

Complex, elegant nose with green hints, not concentrated.

    20. Miguel Schrack

French style cab with notes of red and blue fruit, green pepper, pepper, tobacco, and oak. Slightly under-ripe. B+.

    21. Stephen Jones

Burgundian style Cab with medium fruits, ample structure, and medium tannins. Green pepper at onset, but enjoyable after 20mins. Will try again in a couple of months.

    22. Richard Lopez

Great on nights 3 and 4. Lots of red and black berry on nose and palate. Nice mid weight body and great finish. Hold for 3 more years, better with food.

    23. Helen Ransom

Review: Fell short, didn’t last till day two.

    24. Leonard Hamilton

      Excellent, as always.

    25. Irving Childers

      Delicious. Adored it.

    26. Pamela Phillips

Fruit less prominent in this bottle.

    27. Norma Rangel

Nose: blackberry, fig, manzanita wood, eucalyptus, baking spice. Palate: lively acid, dark fruit, firm tannins.

    28. Martin Williamson

Vibrant red fruit with fennel and black pepper aroma. Salty tannic finish pairs well with chicken and asparagus.

    29. Terry Broglio

Young with nice potential, light red fruits, and herbal notes. Ruby violet.

    30. Josh Haynes

Pure and tasty, great for drinking young.

    31. Robert Kincaid

Clean and precise cab with minimal jamminess. Not for fans of heavily extracted styles. Ideal for those who appreciate acidity and minerality.

    32. Jeri Larson

Precise, medium-bodied Napa Cab with refreshing acidity and minerality. A beautiful wine that will keep you coming back for more.

    33. Mary Chaney

Medium acidity and tannin with notes of blue and red berries and a hint of herbs. Needs time to see how it evolves.

    34. Jeffrey Quintana

      Dry and tart.

    35. Edward Mullenix

Lively and fresh with good style. Pyrazine notes for Nic, brightness for me. COVID pricing ends in May.

    36. Gloria Foster

      Great Napa wine.

    37. Pilar Ladwig

Wine is dry with black cherry, cedar, and vanilla flavors. Medium+ complexity and well-balanced. Finish is med+ with good intensity. Very good wine.

    38. Nicole Odom

      No review provided.

    39. Amy Pope

Lovely, but needs aging. 13% old school.

    40. Dorothy Yates

Outstanding deep purple wine with dark fruit and earthy aromas, medium acidity, full body, and a long finish. Great aging potential.

    41. Gene Taft

Medium-bodied with elegant black-currant fruits, hints of herbs, cedar, and graphite, and moderate tannins on the smooth finish. Tasted at Sepia Chicago from the winelist.

    42. Justin Norris

Matthiasson’s Cabernet is an elegant and understated choice that always delivers good value.

    43. Carol White

Violet color with anise and dark fruit notes on nose and palate. Balanced with earthy and cranberry acidity. Crisp tannins on finish. Young with potential and classic cabernet structure.

    44. Stacey Fraley

A- rated wine with black and red fruit, cassis, herbal notes, and a slightly acidic finish.

    45. Anna Averill

Cherry notes open to complex red fruits. Subtle yet complex, very good. Would buy more.

    46. Joseph Miranda

Palate is balanced, but not solid. Nose is reserved with subtle notes of fresh plum and black cherry. Unremarkable at this price point.

    47. Edmund Jacobs

Focused with red plum, savory herbs, smoke, and spice. Nice acidity and fine tannins. 13% alcohol.

    48. Mae Valencia

Cabernet with cassis and red berries on the nose. Medium-bodied with elegant acidity. Could benefit from aging.

    49. Larry Charles

Sorry, but your request is not clear. The review you provided doesn’t have any context or information about wine that I can use to rewrite it. Please provide me with more details or a different review to work with.

    50. Constance Joseph

Promising wine, but currently tastes like Haagen Dazs Vanilla ice cream.

    51. Cora Robinson

Cabernet is midweight, sleek, and a little racy with a red fruit taste. Decant for at least 4 hours.

    52. Latoya Conard

Medium-bodied with green pepper, fresh black cherry, and herbaceous notes. Requires decanting for 2 hours. Can be aged to reach peak fruitiness with integrated oak.

    53. Mary Young

“Surprisingly great Cab with wonderful acidity and balanced fruit, took 2-3 hours to enter. 7 out of 13 wine.”

    54. Sophia Walker

Matthiasson is Napa’s best. Aromatic with fruit for days and good tannins. Age it, and it will get better.

    55. Mary Fisher

Recommend decanting for better taste. Pass on rating due to poor serving method.

    56. William Hadiaris

      “Underwhelming Cabernet from Matthiasson.”

    57. Tina Felton

New release with tight nose: raspberry, plum, bell pepper, oregano, rutherford dust. High tannin, medium plus acid, red fruited. Needs time to fill out, but will become a classic old school Napa cab.

    58. Mark Fernandez

Medium red with moderate aromas and a hint of age. Flavors of red cherry, plum and green pepper with a long finish. Young wine.

    59. Greg Watson

Well-balanced with lean dark red fruit. Only 13%. Love it.

    60. Juan Campos

      Elegant Napa Cabernet.

    61. Mary Avila

Well balanced but unremarkable wine with medium body and red berry notes. Good for a wide range of wine drinkers, but ultimately forgettable.

    62. Theresa Roberts

Simple wine with cherry, vanilla, and granite notes. Dry palate with low tannins on medium finish. No potential for improvement.

    63. Warren Bold

      Lacks fruit. Lifeless.

    64. Becky Macarthur

Review: Elegant and balanced with detailed flavors of red berries, thyme, earth, and cocoa nibs. Elevated fresh acidity and moderate tannins. Only 13°.

    65. Janice Shannon

Fresh, vibrant, and balanced California Cabernet with notes of red fruit, tobacco, and green bell pepper. Surprisingly only 13.5% ABV. Deserves time in the cellar. Daily Drinkers selection by Justin Wells.

    66. Collen Whitehead

Dark red. Sweet aroma of red berries and licorice. Medium-bodied with dry notes. Short finish for the price.

    67. Charles Blakeley

Balanced Napa wine with notes of plum, vanilla, and herbs. Smooth mouthfeel, despite low alcohol content.

    68. Debra Baldwin

      Excellent old school cab. Bravo!

    69. Ryan Daniels

Juicy red fruit with sweet spice and slightly chalky tannins. Priced at AUD 235 per bottle.

    70. Lorraine Bradt

Simple with blackcurrant, mint, and controlled oak with a slight alcohol warmth on the long finish. Time may add complexity.

    71. Kevin Tith

This wine is a fantastic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with refined blackcurrant notes, fresh acidity, and a long, evolving finish. It will only get better with age.

    72. Tom Yazzie

Cabernet with a restrained style, notes of cedar/redwood and clean cassis.

    73. Rhonda Perez

Dark currant aroma with a hint of green edge. Sour cherry flavor, but more enjoyable on the nose than on the palate.

    74. Bonnie Rohe

Exuberant and perfectly ripe, this Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a beautiful melange of sweet fruits and subtle floral and herbal tones. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and pronounced acid, it’s an elegant and fresh, yet serious and unique rendition of the grape. Fabulous stuff!

    75. Keith Barkley

Unexpected savory notes of soy and mushroom make this Cabernet Sauvignon a unique experience.
