Crafted with care by the talented winemaker, Dan Petroski, Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 emerges as a stellar representation of Napa Valley’s renowned Cabernet Sauvignon. With an eye for detail and a passion for showcasing the diversity of the estate, Dan Petroski has blended the richness of Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc, highlighting the unique soil profiles of Larkmead Vineyards. This 2021 vintage, part of the esteemed portfolio of Larkmead wines, radiates the essence of Larkmead Winery’s dedication to excellence.

The wine reveals itself in a deep violet-ruby hue, beckoning with an allure of richness and depth. Upon opening, the glass brims with the fragrance of violets and mocha, swiftly intermingling with dark blue fruits. As it breathes, the aroma evolves, unfurling layers of bramble berry, exotic spices, and a comforting whisper of vanilla. These notes are beautifully complemented by the earthiness of juniper and cedar, and the refreshing scent of a winter pine forest, creating a symphony of aromas that capture the essence of Larkmead Vineyards.

On the palate, the Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 unfolds with elegance and complexity. It’s a medium-bodied wine that carries the classic savories of red and black fruits, enriched by the distinctive terroir of Calistoga. The presence of camphor, loamy earth, and dried tobacco nuances adds layers of depth and interest, making each sip a discovery. The mineral brightness unique to Larkmead’s vineyard adds an elegant tension, complementing the plush tannins and compelling a second taste.

Critics have showered acclaim on this exquisite bottle, with Jeb Dunnuck and Vinous both awarding it 92 points. Dunnuck praises its classic Larkmead savories and outstanding length, hinting at its potential to evolve beautifully over the next 10-15 years. Vinous highlights its approachability, complexity, and the pretty floral notes that lift the finish, encapsulating the essence of the estate with every sip.

With a production of 2,368 cases, this Cabernet Sauvignon blend, comprising 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, is a testament to Larkmead’s commitment to quality. Aged for 20 months in 64% new French oak, the wine achieves a balance of intensity and elegance, indicative of its 14.7% alcohol content and the diverse soil types of Cortina gravel and Pleasanton loam that it hails from.

The 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is not just a wine; it’s an experience. Its dense structure and complexity promise a journey of discovery with every glass. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature and after decanting for an hour or two, it presents an opportunity to savor the wine’s unfolding character. With a drinking window that extends from now to the next 15-30 years, this vintage is an invitation to explore the depth and breadth of Larkmead wines, a cornerstone of Larkmead Winery’s remarkable portfolio.

Moving to the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, its deeper ruby hue is followed by classic Larkmead notes of savory red and black fruits, camphor, loamy earth, and dried tobacco-like nuances. It's textbook Calistoga with its savoriness and minerality, and it s medium-bodied, with an elegant, focused mouthfeel and outstanding length. It has plenty of charm today (if you don't mind some tannins) and I suspect will evolve for 10-15 years.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a soft, open-knit wine that will drink well upon release. This is an approachable Calistoga Cabernet endowed with tons of complexity. Black cherry, gravel, spice, new leather, tobacco and scorched earth convey the essence of the estate. Pretty floral top notes lift the finish.
