Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 2020, crafted by the esteemed winemaker Veronique Boss-Drouhin at Maison Joseph Drouhin, emerges from the prestigious vineyard site nestled at the heart of Cote de Nuits, between Morey-Saint-Denis and Vougeot. With a history rooted in ancient times, the village of Chambolle boasts fertile land near a stream, making it an ideal location for vineyards since Gallo-Roman days, cultivated lovingly by monks during the Middle Ages. Joseph Drouhin, as custodians of this heritage, owns several parcels in this revered appellation.

The essence of this wine is embodied in fine lace and silk, represented by its bright and intense color. The complex bouquet tantalizes the senses with evocative notes of violet, black cherry, and damp earth, accompanied by occasional hints of truffle and game depending on the vintage. On the palate, the wine reveals its refinement, as velvety tannins elegantly coat the mouth. The texture perfectly balances with the acidity, creating a harmonious symphony of flavors. The aftertaste lingers long, adorned with the delightful essence of cherry and candied fruit.

Vinified with meticulous care, the grapes undergo total destemming before a fermentation and maceration period of 2 to 3 weeks in small open vats, characterized by regular punching of the cap and gentle pumping-over. Indigenous yeasts are employed to preserve the true expression of the terroir and vintage. After pressing in a vertical press, the wine matures in oak barrels, 20 to 25% of which are new, for 14 to 16 months. The oak used is sourced from French high forests, ensuring a refined aging process. Throughout this period, every decision is made based on careful tasting evaluations, with technical analysis serving as a complement.

Critical acclaim for Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 2020 is abundant, with Burghound awarding an impressive 93 points. The wine exhibits an excellent drive and delineation, revealing its floral-infused aromas and ripe dark berries framed by a delicate touch of oak. The richness and seductive texture of the medium-bodied flavors lead to a dusty, balanced, and moderately austere finish, hinting at its potential for further depth with proper aging.

In summary, Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 2020 stands as a testament to the winery’s commitment to terroir and vintage character, a captivating wine of finesse and allure that promises to grace any connoisseur’s collection.

Joseph Drouhin 2020 (Av. de la Résistance, Beaune): Lovely, charming, fruity, with a hint of sweetness. Delicious. 90 pts.

    2. Antonio Whetsel

Deep purple color with prominent oak and spice on the nose. Dark fruits, spices, and a hint of chalk and minerals on the palate. Earthy heft with a fine lengthy finish. A very fine Chambolle AC that will reward cellaring.

Here too there is just enough wood present to remark upon framing the overtly floral-suffused aromas of spicy and ripe dark berries. There is both excellent drive and delineation to the rich, sappy and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a dusty, balanced and moderately austere finish. Like several wines in the range, this too will need to develop more depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range.
