The E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Mouline 2019 is a masterpiece of viticulture and winemaking, representing the pinnacle of the Guigal family’s craft. Crafted by the renowned Philippe Guigal, winemaker at the E. Guigal estate, this exceptional wine encapsulates the essence of the prestigious Cote-Rotie appellation. With a legacy founded by Etienne Guigal, the E. Guigal winery continues to uphold its reputation for producing some of the most sought-after wines in the world.

This vintage of E. Guigal La Mouline exhibits a mesmerizing ruby red color with vermillion tints, immediately signaling its depth and complexity. On the nose, it unfolds with an intricate bouquet of small red fruits and blackberry, intertwined with floral violet aromas, showcasing the Guigal Cote Rotie La Mouline’s signature intensity and finesse. The addition of Viognier adds a delicate aromatic complexity, making this wine a true expression of the unique terroir from which it originates.

The palate is greeted with a supple balance between the finesse of the aromatic profile and an explosive richness attributed to the wine’s concentration. Notes of bloody black and blue fruits, tapenade, salted meat, woodsmoke, and a hint of violets create a kaleidoscope of flavors, co-fermented with a significant portion of Viognier to achieve a full-bodied richness. Aged for 42 months in new oak barriques, this wine marries the boldness of Guigal Syrah with the elegance and suppleness that are characteristic of E. Guigal La Mouline, resulting in a voluptuous, silky, and intensely aromatic experience.

Critics have lauded the 2019 E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Mouline with high acclaim. Jeb Dunnuck awarded a near-perfect score, emphasizing its bigger, richer profile and multi-dimensional mouthfeel. Similarly, The Wine Cellar Insider and Vinous recognized its opulence and perfumed complexity, with scores of 98 and 96-98 points respectively. James Suckling and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also praised its grace, power, and supreme elegance, highlighting its potential for aging.

Serving as a testament to the E. Guigal estate’s dedication to excellence, the E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Mouline 2019 is a wine that beautifully marries the rich history of the Guigal family with the exceptional quality of the Rhone Valley’s terroir. It is a wine that promises to evolve gracefully over the years, reminiscent of the esteemed 1988 vintage, as Philippe Guigal himself notes. With its powerful structure, refined elegance, and profound aromatics, this vintage is not only a reflection of the E. Guigal winery’s mastery but also a celebration of the Guigal family’s enduring legacy in the world of fine wine. Enjoy now or cellar to witness its evolution, pairing with exceptional dishes that match its grandeur, such as pheasant or partridge, to fully appreciate the depth and complexity of one of the most emblematic wines from the E. Guigal estate.

Why is Cote Rotie so expensive?

Côte-Rôtie wines are expensive due to their limited production in steep, labor-intensive vineyards, high demand among collectors, exceptional quality, and aging potential. The unique terroir, traditional winemaking practices, and strict AOC regulations further contribute to their prestige and cost, making them highly sought after and valued.

    Is Guigal wine good?

Guigal wines are renowned for their quality across the Rhône Valley, from everyday offerings to collectible "La La" wines (La Mouline, La Landonne, La Turque). Esteemed for meticulous winemaking and aging, Guigal excels in expressing Rhône's terroir, earning acclaim for both their accessible and premium bottles.

Meaty, chewy and gamy, this substantial red shows beautiful floral lift, with salty mineral energy cruising alongside earthy notes of forest floor, revealing a swatch of black fig puree and mocha. Offers depth, substance and textural beauty, with mouthwatering acidity adding surprising tension and brightness through the dark core. Just beginning to show its tremendous potential. Best from 2025 through 2042.

While just as aromatic and charming on the nose—where ephemeral floral notes join ripe cherries—as previous years, the 2019 Cote Rotie La Mouline isn't quite as impressive on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied, silky and caressing, without the same power, yet it's supremely elegant.
    DEC 93
    Decanter
There's a touch of currant on the nose here which gives a very ripe impression. Cola oak dominates the palate at this early stage, and the finish is dry. It's powerful and structured, and the intense oak and alcohol combine to give a sweet effect on the finish. Attractive aromatics lie in wait underneath the oak, so give this time. Gneiss and loess soils of lieu-dit Côte Blonde. Fermented in stainless steel, aged for 40 months in new oak barriques.

Violets, espresso, black and red plums, smoke, and dark red berries permeate the nose. On the palate, the wine quickly asserts its opulent nature. The layers of exotically textured, silky, elegant, and refined fruits with all their purity stays with you for close to 60 seconds in the exotic, sensual finish. The wine blends 89% Syrah with 11% Viognier. Philippe Guigal thinks this reminds him of the 1988. The 2019 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is a bigger, richer Côte Rôtie. Co-fermented with a solid chuck of Viognier and around 85% destemmed (the same as the La Turque), this full-bodied effort has a kaleidoscope-like bouquet of bloody black and blue fruits, tapenade, salted meat, woodsmoke, and a touch of violets. This cuvée is always an exotic wine, and the 2019 is no exception, offering full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, plenty of structure, and a great finish.

Great nose of summer flowers and ripe blackberries with a glaze of toasty oak. A very graceful wine in spite of all the power and concentration. Feels almost weightless until you get to the finish where you feel the enormous structure that lurks just below the surface. A cuvee of 89% syrah and 11% viognier. Matured in 100% new oak for 42 months. Drink or hold. - Stuart Pigott, Senior Editor

    Vinous
Bright, highly perfumed blueberry, black raspberry, violet and exotic spice aromas, along with a wild touch of blood orange. Juicy and lithe on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit flavors that stain the palate while showing little in the way of excess weight. Finishes extremely long and sweet, with a building floral note, even tannins and a late jolt of five-spice powder. By Josh Raynokis on March 2020
