Emanating from the revered vineyards of Chapouin, La Janasse, and La Crau, the Domaine de La Janasse Chaupin Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2020 is a masterpiece crafted by the skilled hands of winemaker Isabelle Sabon. This exceptional wine, rooted in vines some of which date back to 1912, is a pure expression of Grenache, showcasing the meticulous vine-growing practices that eschew pesticides and emphasize natural manure and weed control. The wine’s creation involves a careful manual harvest with selective vineyard sorting, followed by an 80% destemming process and a dedicated 26-day maceration. The aging process, conducted in foudres and demi-muids over 12 months, imbues the wine with its characteristic depth and complexity.
In appearance, the Janasse Chaupin exudes an alluring translucent ruby/purple color, setting the stage for a sensory exploration. The aroma is a captivating dance of blackberries and black raspberries, elegantly twined with the earthy tones of peppery garrigue and herbes de Provence, all accented by a delicate floral touch of violets. This aromatic bouquet is a testament to the wine’s deep connection to its Chateauneuf-du-Pape origins.
Upon tasting, the Domaine Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin unravels its layered narrative. It presents a luscious array of ripe black fruits, with the sweetness of raspberry jam and cooked strawberries coming to the fore. This fruit-forward profile is beautifully balanced with nuances of licorice, dried thyme, cured meat, and bay leaves, creating a complex and engaging palate. The texture is nothing short of luxurious, with silky tannins and a seamlessly integrated acidity contributing to its overall finesse and balance.
The wine’s full body is complemented by an undercurrent of broad-shouldered strength, yet it never loses its elegant poise, a hallmark of the Domaine de La Janasse Chaupin. The finish is notably savory, lingering on the palate and inviting the taster to savor its intricate details.
Pairing superbly with robust dishes such as deer stew, the Domaine de La Janasse Chaupin elevates the culinary experience, harmonizing with the rich flavors of the game and enhancing the overall dining enjoyment.

    23. WS

Ripe but very focused, with a streamlined feel to the mix of raspberry, red currant and bitter cherry fruit flavors. Reveals a racy apple wood note coursing underneath, while licorice, black tea and graphite fill in through the finish. Best from 2023 through 2038.

    24. WA

All Grenache, with about 20% to 30% whole bunches, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is slightly herbal and stemmy on the nose, but those elements are balanced by wonderful black cherry and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, concentrated yet silky, with a long, briny finish, this is another strong 2020 from the Sabon family. Best after 2023.

    25. DEC

Full-bodied, generous in fruit and glycerol. The tannins and acidity seem to meld together into a single vertebral column. The alcohol is present, lending sweetness rather than heat. Remarkably elegant for a wine of these dimensions, with great, rising, upright flavours and structure. This is a very special wine with a long finish. Parcels of Grenache planted on lieux-dits Chapouin, La Janasse and La Crau, the oldest planted in 1912.

    26. JD

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin is mostly Grenache sourced from the northern part of the appellation (a small part comes from La Crau), and it was 70% destemmed and brought up in foudre and tank. A deeply hued barrel sample, it offers lots of cassis and pure black raspberry fruits, medium to full body, incredible purity, great tannins, and a blockbuster finish. This is another regal, flawlessly put together Grenache from this talented team.

Smoked kirsch, cherries, flowers, licorice and cocoa create the interesting nose. The palate offers richness, espresso tinged, dark cherries and cocoa with vibrancy, earthiness and energy with a touch of spice that kicks in on the backend. The wine is made using 100% old vine Grenache. Drink from 2023-2035.
