The 2022 DAOU Discovery Chardonnay, meticulously crafted by the esteemed winemaker Daniel Daou at Daou Vineyards & Winery, stands as a testament to the artistry and dedication inherent in every bottle produced by the estate. This Chardonnay encapsulates the essence of the Paso Robles terroir, a region celebrated for its unique microclimate and geology, factors that are integral to the distinctive character of DAOU wines.

Upon pouring, the DAOU Chardonnay reveals a luminous, golden hue, hinting at the richness and depth that await the senses. The nose is greeted with an opulent bouquet, where the lush aromas of pineapple and mango meld harmoniously with the warm, comforting notes of vanilla bean, hazelnut, and nutmeg spice. This aromatic complexity is further elevated by the floral undertones of honeysuckle and star jasmine, delicately intertwined with the zesty freshness of lemon and the subtle spiciness of sweet ginger.

The palate of the DAOU Chardonnay is a true reflection of Daniel Daou’s winemaking prowess, offering a weighty and mouth-filling experience. Each sip delivers a symphony of round, silky flavors, from the succulence of Bartlett pear and Crenshaw melon to the exotic notes of kiwi and fresh pineapple. The DAOU wine Chardonnay’s luxurious texture is beautifully complemented by the subtle sweetness of Golden Delicious apple and papaya, harmoniously blending with the rich, creamy nuances of lemon cream pie and crushed almonds. As the experience unfolds, the wine reveals a lingering finish, where the delicate essence of white peach, citrus peel, and cinnamon gracefully dances on the palate, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and finesse.

The 2022 vintage of the DAOU Discovery Chardonnay is a celebration of the winemaker’s connection with the land and his mastery in navigating the challenges posed by the season. The initially dry conditions, followed by late rains and a September heat wave, tested Daniel Daou’s ingenuity and experience. The result is a wine that not only showcases the balance and flavor elegance characteristic of DAOU Family Estates but also underscores the importance of harmonizing grape growing and winemaking techniques.

Aged for 5 months in 30% new French oak, the DAOU Chardonnay inherits a refined character from its barrels, striking a perfect balance with its 14.5% alcohol content. This careful aging process contributes to the wine’s layered complexity, ensuring that each element, from aroma to finish, is a pure expression of both the varietal and the estate’s unique terroir.

In summary, the 2022 DAOU Discovery Chardonnay is not merely a wine; it is an embodiment of the passion and dedication of DAOU Family Estates to producing world-class wines that rival the most respected appellations in the world. From its vibrant color and rich aromas to its luxurious palate and enduring finish, the DAOU Chardonnay is a testament to the harmonious blend of Old World tradition and New World innovation’”a true jewel of the DAOU wine collection.

Critical Acclaim

WA 94
Wine Advocate
The 2022 Chardonnay Estate underwent full malolactic conversion and matured for 11 months in 100% new oak. It has youthful but classy new oak aromas of toast, vanilla and spice over a core of yellow apple, quince and honeyed tones. The medium-bodied palate is luxuriously satiny, concentrated and ripe, its nuanced fruit enlivened by surprisingly fresh acidity. It has a touch of old-school, tropical malolactic character, yet streaks of matchstick keep it tethered to the ground. Lovely!
