Perched on the secluded slopes of the Mayacamas, surrounded by the untamed wilderness, Cornell Vineyards presents its 2017 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a testament to the land’s enigmatic personality and the resilience of its terroir. Crafted by esteemed winemaker Francoise Peschon, this wine encapsulates the essence of the vineyard’s high-altitude estate, untouched by the forest fires of October 2017 thanks to an impeccably timed September harvest. The result is a pristine wine of conviction, a poignant tribute to Sonoma County’s enduring spirit.

The 2017 Cornell Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep, invigorating expression of the vintage’s adversity and the winery’s commitment to excellence. With a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by 5.5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Malbec, this wine underwent a 20-month elevation in 66% new French oak barrels, showcasing the meticulous selection and craftsmanship that define Cornell Vineyards.

Upon first glance, the wine reveals a formidable stature, its color a rich, deep hue that promises complexity and depth. The nose is greeted with warm spices, black tea, creme de cassis, and a delicate hint of rose petal, an enticing prelude to the flavors that unfold. On the palate, the wine offers layers of wild blackberry, fresh coffee beans, and a nuanced blend of clove and orange zest, all supported by finely textured, lengthy tannins that speak to the wine’s formidable structure and balance.

The critical acclaim surrounding the Cornell Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 further attests to its exceptional quality. Awarded 96 points by James Suckling, the wine is praised for its “extremely bright aromas of crushed berries, blackberries, violets, and flowers,” coupled with a medium-to full-bodied profile that boasts firm, tight tannins, yet unfolds in layers to reveal a long, beautiful finish. Suckling notes the wine’s potential, recommending two to three years of cellaring for it to fully come around, underscoring its capacity for grace and longevity.

The Cornell Vineyards wine, particularly the Cornell Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, stands as a beacon of the winery’s dedication to producing expressive wines that honor their terroir. With every sip, one experiences the unique character and steadfast spirit of the land, a joy to savor and a privilege to behold. As this dynamic wine continues to evolve, it promises to reward those who wait with an even more profound expression of the Cornell Vineyards’ distinctive essence.
