Crafted meticulously by winemaker Matt Crafton, the Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2019 paints a vivid picture in the glass. A 22-month sojourn in 100% French oak, with 40% being new barrels, reveals a captivating hue. On the nose, the wine unveils an arresting perfume of fresh flowers and lavender, harmoniously underscored by notes of ripe plum, sandalwood, cherry compote, and a delightful hint of Earl Grey. As one delves deeper, traces of black pepper, vanilla, crushed rock, and soy make a subtle entrance.

Taking a sip, one is greeted by the bright zesty acidity. Initial bursts of raspberry and cranberry swiftly make way for dark shades of blueberry jam and ripe blackberry. Mingling amidst the fruit are savory undertones of cedar and mint, characteristics intrinsic to Montelena Cabernet. The wine speaks of its youth, urging for a few years of patience in the cellar. Yet, even at this nascent stage, its vivacity and vineyard purity remain compelling.

A lingering finish carries forward the wine’s dual nature. Espresso bean and cacao initiate the closing notes, soon replaced by a dance of baking spices and a gentle sweetness. Critics echo the wine’s allure, with a 91-point commendation from Wine Advocate praising its cherry and redcurrant notes, and a 90-point nod from Wine Spectator lauding its robust build and hints of steeped plum and blackberry compote. This wine promises a jou

rney that will evolve, deepen, and enthrall with time.

Solidly built, showing an array of singed vanilla and cocoa along the edges, with a core of steeped plum and blackberry compote flavors. The slightly chewy finish is scored by tar and savory accents, giving this a bit of an old-school bent in the end. Best from 2023 through 2034.

    Mel's Notes
Color: Captivating hue resulting from its time in French oak. Nose: Textbook notes of cherries and redcurrants, beautifully complemented by fresh flowers, lavender, ripe plum, sandalwood, and cherry compote. An intriguing hint of vanilla and Earl Grey punctuates the aromatic experience. Palate: Bright zesty acidity leads, introducing raspberry and cranberry, which are soon joined by deeper shades of blueberry jam, ripe blackberry, cedar, and mint. The tannins are silky, framed by subtle touches of vanilla, cocoa, and singed vanilla. A savory finish, reminiscent of espresso bean, cacao, and baking spices, rounds out the tasting. Food Pairings: Given its vibrant acidity and mix of fruit notes, pair this wine with grilled steaks, lamb dishes, or hearty pastas. The savory undertones and cedar notes would also complement dishes with herbs or mushrooms, such as a mushroom risotto or herb-roasted chicken.

    Wine Advocate
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley includes 9% Merlot from a vineyard in Oak Knoll and spent 16 months in 28% new French oak, with a bit of Hungarian as well. It offers up textbook notes of cherries and redcurrants, plus a hint of vanilla, all in an easy-drinking, medium to full-bodied format. The tannins are silky, and the acids are tart in this moderately concentrated effort that should provide enjoyable drinking over the next 10 years or so.
