Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2021 is a wine that exemplifies the unparalleled expertise of the renowned winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, crafted under the prestigious Caterwaul Wines label. This vintage showcases the epitome of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the region’s finest vineyards, resulting in a dark, complex, and structured wine that will leave an indelible mark on your palate.
The Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon in the glass presents an intriguing and fully opaque dark purple color, capturing your attention from the moment you see it. Its aromatic profile is densely layered, offering a symphony of scents. The aroma features a complex blend of plum reduction, quince, oolong tea, and cedar bark that creates a captivating experience for your sense of smell.
As the wine dances across the palate, a rich dark fruit core takes center stage, enlivened by peripheral hints of brambly red fruit. Indulge in the luscious flavors of blackberry paste, leather, and cocoa nib, dominating the mid palate with a harmonious balance. The wine has a long aftertaste that brings out more vivid flavors of raspberry, dark cherry, and blueberries. This creates a lasting impression of richness and intricacy.
This vintage boasts a sleek mouthfeel, elegantly framed by finely integrated tannins and a well-balanced acidity, ensuring immediate enjoyment or the option of cellaring for further development. The meticulous craftsmanship of Thomas Rivers Brown shines through, allowing the wine’s true essence to shine.
The 2021 vintage in Napa and Sonoma counties was characterized by high quality and low yields, much like its predecessors. Despite drought conditions and minimal precipitation, the vines thrived, producing exceptional fruit. Vigilant vineyard practices, such as maintaining extra leaf coverage to shield the berries and clusters from excessive heat and sunlight, ensured the preservation of fruit integrity.
Caterwaul Wines, a collaboration between Matt Hardin and Thomas Rivers Brown, represents the culmination of their shared passion and expertise. Matt Hardin, a sixth-generation Pope Valley resident and esteemed farmer, joined forces with Thomas Rivers Brown, the maestro behind celebrated labels such as Schrader Cellars and Rivers-Marie. This partnership birthed Caterwaul wines, a testament to their mutual dedication to excellence.
Immerse yourself in the Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2021, a wine that captures the essence of the region’s terroir and showcases the unrivaled skills of its creators. Indulge in its dark opulence, relish its intricate aromas, and savor its multi-dimensional flavors, as this remarkable wine leaves an everlasting impression on your palate.

75 reviews for Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2021

    1. Naomi Green

Review: Aromas of dark fruits, warm berry pie, and cedar. On the palate, big dark fruits, red flowers, and vanilla with firm tannins. Smooth finish. Drink now or age 7-10 years with a proper decant.

    2. Timothy Vanatta

Youthful 2019 cab with purple fruit, dark berries, spice, and cocoa; smooth mid-palate with solid depth and concentration for the price point; decent finish.

    3. Luis Hall

2019 Caterwaul Cabernet – Tempting dark purple color. Black and blueberry fruit, dark currants and plum flavors. Touch of leather and tannins. Good value.

    4. Juanita Montes

High QPR at $49. Needs 2-hr decant, but worth the wait. Thomas Rivers Brown winemaker.

    5. Tiffany Mcinturff

TL;DR: Try Wildroots CoastalBerry Trail Mix with any red wine, like 2019 Caterwaul for a perfect snack pairing. Smooth and pure. 93+

    6. Daisy Howe

Excellent Napa Cab with deep, rich flavors of dark fruits, vanilla wafers, and milk chocolate. Soft, chewy tannins and excellent structure. Best QPR at under $55. Don’t miss it!

    7. Stanley Mcallister

Young and ripe with blackberry, plum, and oak spice aromas. Medium+ bodied with rounded tannins that need about six months or a year to come together.

    8. Herman Bozell

Great value for the price, needs a few hours of air to smooth out. Preferred over the 2018.

    9. Timothy Marcolina

Big, bold, and fruity. A crowd-pleaser with a high alcohol level. May divide wine buffs. I’ll buy more.

    10. Jason Vernon

2019 Caterwaul Napa Cabernet Sauvignon: Rich, sweet and balanced with concentrated cassis, black currant and blueberry flavors, hints of coconut, graphite and cedar. Amazing value for Napa.

    11. Charles Bradley

TRB’s Caterwaul ’19 is a great entry-level Napa Valley Cab. It’s smooth, full-bodied, with terrific dark fruit and oak on the nose. It’s already very accessible and in its drinking window.

    12. Rhonda Cooper

Best Napa cab under $50 with TRB’s mocha signature. Brooding nose with boysenberry and chocolate. Firmer structure on day 1. Crowd pleaser.

    13. Jessica Oneal

Rich, deep, and loved by all wine tasters. Plums, cherries, toasted vanilla, and sweet ripe tannins. Good at PnP and better with air.

    14. Robert Zimmerman

Great value, luxurious taste. Dark fruit and cocoa notes with a silky finish. Balanced and full-bodied, best when young.

    15. Jorge Duncan

Top-notch Napa Cab for $50, beats DICO at $65. Open and flavorful, with sweet spice, dark fruit, vanilla, and rich chocolate notes. Perfect for daily drinking. Need another case!

    16. James Lange

Great wine at a great price – $50 steal.

    17. Alejandro Whorley

Consistently impressive QPR and traditional Napa Cab. This year’s vintage is the best yet. Perfect balance, with dark cherry, raspberry, blackberry and baking spices. Not complex, but incredibly tasty.

    18. Darlene Paviolitis

Same notes as before, enjoyed it again.

    19. Marilyn Shrum

Excellent wine with rich dark fruit, balanced with notes of currant, vanilla, plum, cedar, and nutmeg. Perfect for aging a few years.

    20. Dorothy Telesco

Amazing Napa wine, great value under $50. Soft berries, cherry, blackberry, vanilla, toasted cedar. Soft acidity, ripe tannins, long finish. Need more!

    21. Victor White

Coravin pour, 3 hours in glass. Inky violet, floral freshness, black and purple fruit, light vanilla. Medium acidity, tannins are medium-light with medium coarseness. Fantastic QPR, drinking well with some air. 93-94.

    22. Elizabeth Chung

Smooth and unbelievable QPR. Dark fruits, cocoa, and vanilla notes with fine and integrated tannins. I wish I could find more wines like this in the same price range.

    23. Randall Smith

Similar to ’18 with toasty, spicy oak and blue fruit. Minor sediment. Two-day finish with headaches.

    24. Madeline Chaires

Enjoyed this elixir, wanted more. Reminder to call shrink.

    25. Laura Brank

First time trying Caterwaul and unfortunately it was corked.

    26. Carol Rudd

Dark, rich, and unmistakably Napa Cab. Lots of cassis and black plum on the nose and palate with a well-balanced acidity and fine tannins. Finish is black currant with emphasis on graphite and gravel. Drink now or cellar for 3-5 years.

    27. Jorge Victor

Notes: Ripe and extracted Napa cab. Middle of the pack among 7 wines at $50 blind tasting. Trinchero took the win, Vineyard 29 Cru came last.

    28. Chiquita Salsman

“Value-packed with blueberries, baking spices and violets. Keep buying.”

    29. Barbara Kagan

Consistent with previous bottles, excellent QPR.

    30. Mary Gibson

Consistent with prior experiences, this Napa cabernet is deep, dark, and rich. Arguably too dense for some palates, but has aging potential.

    31. Randall Daffin

      Great wine!

    32. Ismael Allison

Approachable and juicy with strong fruit, tannins, and acidity. Improves with air and has a mouthwatering ending. Drinks like a bottle twice the price. One dimensional fruit. Perfect for modern Cali cab drinkers.

    33. William Linkous

“Best CS under $100, beats most 100 Napa CS. Chocolate, Blueberry Jam, Vanilla, and Chinese spice on the nose. Silky palate, worth a 95.”

    34. William Boles

      Great wine, 18/20.

    35. Reba Ho

Great QPR, TRB’s skillful winemaking and the 2019 Napa vintage makes this wine a favorite. Punches above its weight class.

    36. Jason Taylor

Very little nose. Round flabby blue fruit-forward mid-palate. Finished with a whimper at best. If a bottle costs more than $50, it’s gotta have some sort of structure and backbone in my book, and this bottle was sorely lacking in these departments. One-dimensional. Why this wine gets so many positive reviews is beyond me., (Ok, what do I like that has some of the characteristics that were missing here? (I find it helpful when reviewers do this – gives me a sense of their palate, so I shall do that here.) I’ve had a couple of 2018 Le Pich Cabs lately – they were good. Price was around $54 with ten percent off 6 bottle discount at AJ’s.)

    37. Robbie Hobbs

2019 Caterwaul cab is a solid QPR at around $50 and at the lower end of Dunnuck’s 92 to 95 rating. 100% cab. Dark purple fruit – blackberry, currants, dark cherry, and blueberry. Nice rich flavors of dark berries, some spice, and a little cocoa.

    38. Vera Herman

Second bottle had more structure but tannins and acid finish was bad. Tasted great on first sip, but became insipid later. Inconsistent, not worth $50.

    39. Ivette Kinney

Bold, fruity, and full-bodied with notes of blueberry and plum. Not for those who prefer a subtle taste, but a great crowd-pleaser. Ready to drink now.

    40. Mary Hilser

Delicious young wine with ripe blue and dark red fruit. Fantastic value for the price.

    41. David Sylvester

New world wine with bold black fruit and structured tannins. Perfect for a special occasion.

    42. Basil Galvan

Value cab buy, modern and serious style. Improved on day 2 with a long decant. TRB signature present. 19>18 IMO.

    43. Robert Owens

Superb Big Napa cab from TRB. Benefits from long decant.

    44. Jackie Hill

Electric magenta color, crème brûlée, stewed black cherry, Quik cocoa powder, and dark plum on the nose. Smooth, dry palate with firm tannins on the surprisingly longish finish. Great value for fruit forward CS.

    45. John Morgan

Superb cab from a unique winery!

    46. Jillian French

Affordable with deep flavors of black and blue fruits, balanced by good acidity and structure. Fruit forward, yet well-balanced.

    47. James Landon

Great value Napa Cabernet. Decant for best results. Fruit-forward with blackberry, blueberry, and vanilla notes. Velvety, full-bodied palate with firm tannins on the finish. Slow ox recommended for richer taste.

    48. Grace Serasio

      Great value, consistently good.

    49. Mary Weishaupt

Excellent value wine with silky mouthfeel and rich dark fruit notes. Perfect for mid-week indulgence.

    50. James Young

Great value for the money. Black and blueberry fruit, dark currants, plum, tobacco, and good tannins. 93+/94 points.

    51. Charles Reid

Deep purple-garnet Napa cab with ripe blueberries, spicy black fruits, and moist tobacco on the nose. Palate has black and blue fruits, cassis, a touch of tobacco and black cherries. Medium-full bodied with a medium+ finish. Well made for the price.

    52. Lynda Beyer

Deep magenta with black cherry, marigold, cinnamon, and blackberry on the nose. Smooth palate with plush tannins on the long finish.

    53. Susan Canter

Great value, needs air to show its full potential. Slightly better than a midweek drinker.

    54. Stephanie Matto

“Consistently great value. 2019 could be the best vintage yet.”

    55. James Brown

Fruit-forward with sour cherry, currant, juicy raspberry, and rhubarb pie flavors. Medium plus acid with a long finish of sour cherry and spice. Young tannins make the polish percussive rather than smooth. Enjoyable and interesting. Serve with food. Drinking fine now, no need to rush.

    56. Audrey Smith

Deep purplish magenta color. Notes of blackberry, raspberry, rose petals, and baking spice on the nose. Dry, plush palate, with firm tannins on the medium long+ finish. Youthful and easy to drink.

    57. Helen Stinchcomb

Disappointing jammy flavor. Will try again.

    58. William Cofield

      Great value. Score: 93/93+.

    59. George Ward

Approachable but young, worth it. Great depth, black cherry and blackberry, licorice, slight tobacco. Best Napa QPR.

    60. Roderick Piehler

Decant for 3 hours, excellent taste. Buy more now, age and revisit later.

    61. Shirley Riveria

Deep purple magenta color. Strawberry jelly, vanilla wafer, boysenberry, buttered toast, and lime rind on the nose. Smooth, dry palate with good acidity. Medium long+ finish with firm tannins. Better value than Caymus.

    62. Bruce Liebsch

Young but enjoyable PNP. Primary nose with full body, soft tannins, dark red fruit. Tertiary notes of cigar and pencil lead. Raspberry, strawberry, cassis layered fruit. Moderate finish with dusty tannins. 90-minute decant suggested but can serve upon opening.

    63. Charles Ferkovich

Favorite CS below $50. Deep color. Black cherry, blackberry, sugar cookie, pumpernickel, and nutmeg on the nose. Smooth, dry palate, firm tannins.

    64. Katherine Park

Great Napa CS at a reasonable price! I’ve bought 3 cases and half is already gone. Let it breathe for maximum flavor. TRB also won WS Wine of the Year with his $80 Double Diamond.

    65. Cheryl Watson

Big nose of blackberry, cassis, cedar, earth, pencil shavings, leather, and cocoa. Full mouthfeel with lots of flavor including blackberry, cassis, spice, cocoa, leather, cedar, and earth. Silky smooth tannins in the long finish.

    66. Bobby Parks

Dark, magenta with blackberry, blueberry jelly, graham cracker, and dark chocolate scents. Dry, full-bodied, medium-intensity tannins with a long finish. Almost equal to Double Diamond but more flamboyant and straightforward. Great QPR.

    67. Josh Faulkner

Review: Bold and powerful wine, well made and high quality. Can be overwhelming on its own but pairs well with food.

    68. Diana Deshayes

Bold and polished. Crowd pleaser for Cab lovers. Ready after 4hr decant. Great value.

    69. Gloria Brick

Full-bodied with a plush mouthfeel, this fruit-forward wine is perfect for pleasing crowds. With a palate of dark cherries, cassis, acai berry, mocha, brown spices, and a hint of cocoa, this wine is a great value.

    70. Edwin Martin

Dialled back compared to previous bottles. 91-92 points. Potential for improvement.

    71. Delphine Bolan

Delicious wine with ripe dark fruits, raspberry liqueur, vanilla, sweet oak and milk chocolate. Good acidity and ripe tannins for a long finish.

    72. James Spellacy

Wine was restrained, with fruit and oak notes. Drank well after decanting for 60 minutes. Worth the $50, but could benefit from 1-2 years in the bottle.

    73. Terri Carr

Great value for money, reliable and easy to drink. Tongue-drying palate with medium tannins and a long finish. Slight resemblance to Caymus. Drink young.

    74. Angela Wachtel

Ripe dark fruit and floral scents with sweet plums and boysenberries on the palate. Not super complex but a great value Napa cab.

    75. Charles Eberhard

Excellent value with perfumed aromas of ripe black cherries, crème de mûre, lilacs, toast and oak spice. Full-bodied, creamy texture with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. Not Schrader RBS, but an exceptional introduction to TRB style.

The 8,000-case 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley goes largely to distribution and has to be one of the great values in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon out there. Classic darker currants, tobacco, chocolate, and some gravelly earth notes all define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a round, supple, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's more than worth it's going rate.
