The NV12 is a happy blend of the warm, generous 2012 vintage and the cool, aromatic, and structured wines of 2011. The beautiful perfume of our mountains fl oats ethereally over a round, plump, inviting wine. It is complex, a blend of the Cabernet family, dominated by Merlot (almost half).
However, more than varieties or even vintages, think place: the NV12 is about half valley floor and half Spring Mountain fruit. The perfume and structure of the wines of the mountains combine with the supple juiciness of our wines from the valley fl oor to create a delicious, ethereal blend.
Origin alone does not tell the whole story. We handle the fruit gently, with a limited extraction, followed by a restrained elevage. We have seen that this leads to a lively, vibrant wine: complex and pleasingly palate cleansing on release, along with a tremendous potential to age. Those who know the Cain Cuve know that it is not heavy, not big, and not sweet. In a word, it is not ‘The Prisoner.’ There is no sugar and the alcohol is a true thirteen and a half percent. Our Cuve sits lightly on the palate, it is refined and refreshing, and it goes perfectly with a wide array of lighter dishes, from salad to pasta to grilled finish.

    1. Tara Forth

A little musty on the nose, but calms with decanting. Ripe, full bodied, with a long finish

    2. Herman Green

Bought this based on K&L Wines SF staff recommendation.1 hour decant: Musty-funk on the nose which never went away over 4 hours, secondary flavors of a forgotten barrel of wine left in the corner of a dank building. Day two: the musty-funk went away, unfortunately so did everything else. Not my style of wine.

    3. Karin Huxtable

A little musty on the nose

    4. Lauren Sunderland

garnet, light/medium body, mild aromas of bramble, red fruit, cassis, strong acid on opening, moderate tannins, short finish, , poor qpr@$30

    5. Yvonne Underwood

Medium to deep garnet red. A bit of Bret on the nose with musty notes, dirty cellar, and damp leaves. Moderate tannins (6/10) and medium bodied. Definitely tastes like a cooler and wet vintage. Earthy notes, herbaceous and only a touch of berries on the palate. Medium finish. Drink till 2019.

    6. Sean Cuevas

Light dirty nose. What appears to be very heavy French new oak is not as it is used oak but heavy. 8/10Shorter finish.

    7. Marianne Murphy

PnP at a restaurant. Really needed decanting.

    8. Sarah Duncklee

Tasted over 3 days. It does need to open. It’s the lower rank of Cain but I find it interesting. Savory, old world character. Time increased it’s finish.

    9. Susan Burnley

CA Cabernet Sauvignons & Blends (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): “Vintages: 59% 2012 & 41% 2011; Vyd locations: 58% Spring Mountain District & 42% Valley Floor; Released 9/1/16; 13.5% ABV;”N: SMOKE; With swirling/addt’l air, notes of choc?P: Med body; Almost swtish frt with counterbalancing mid-P acidity which pretty much continues through the Long, slightly tangy finish. NICE now, & 6 mos or so COULD improve it, then provide excellent drinking through ’21. 92 pts Decanter (Rose); [As of early Mar ’20, wine-searcher shows no available sources for this bottling, though Vivino may].

    10. Heather Boyland

      a mix of two vintages 59% 2012, 41% 2011,this is basically the houses 3rd wine…slow-ox ,spice,black licorice,game, coffee ,but streamlined 13.5%, something’s off though, and it’s not corked, not a fan….

    11. Diana Titus

Merlot-based Bourdoux style blend using two vintages. Had a glass at an SF restaurant and assuming it’s this latest vintage. Fruit forward, with some complexity of wood, spice, and earthiness. Good balance of acid, alcohol, sweetness, and tannins. Will probably improve over time. Really enjoyed. Ended up reading about the winery online and signed up for their allocation list so I can pick up more from this producer in the future.

    12. Tara Thorne

Drank it at any guns with Mary and Todd Randolph, 9 Hole

    13. Sandra Alvarado

Blend of 2012 and 2011 vintages. 50% Merlot, 32/10/4/4 Cabernet/CF/PV/Malbec. Medium plus nose shows aged style, leather, dried herbs, coffee bean, red plums, blackberry brush, sage. Palate matches with medium body, balance of freshness and age, smooth style, dried plums, cedar. Nice value, different style than most of CA.

    14. Elaine Diaz

n:P: funky, red and black fruits. Licorice.

    15. Bonnie Doyle

Nose right out the gate was funktastic but somewhat improved with a little time in the glass, I think. Notes of cherry, blackberry, mild spice. Very light on the mouth but an odd one.

    16. Robert Linsley

Off putting nose to start. Tasted better. Dark color. Nose got better, but tough to get over. Nose better on 2nd day, but taste thinner.
