Crafted with precision by renowned winemaker Russell Bevan, Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Red 2019 stands as a testament to the artistry of blending. This remarkable wine showcases the essence of Napa Valley’s Tench Vineyard, with its rockiest Cabernet Sauvignon blocks serving as the backbone of this creation. The consulting winemaker’s touch of expertise shines through in every sip, creating a wine that surpasses even its esteemed predecessors.

In the glass, the 2019 Ontogeny Red exudes a deep, dense purple hue, hinting at the opulence within. The nose dances with an intriguing tapestry of aromas ” ripe cherries, delicate celery seed, warm cinnamon, and a whisper of cedar. This complexity draws you in, preparing the palate for what lies ahead.

Upon the first sip, the wine envelops the senses with its full-bodied and velvety texture. The luxurious mouthfeel carries flavors of luscious crame de cassis, elegant violets, a touch of tobacco leaf, and a graceful undercurrent of chocolate. The integration of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot complements the Cabernet Sauvignon core, resulting in a symphony of flavors that seamlessly intertwine.

Critics have showered this vintage with accolades, and rightly so. With 95 points from Wine Advocate, the wine is hailed for its meaty depth and fruit-forward character. 3 reviews for Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Red 2019

    1. WA

The bargain in the Bevan lineup is the 2019 Ontogeny Red Wine, which is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend that includes small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Featuring lovely notes of ripe cherries, celery seed, cinnamon and cedar, it’s complex and full-bodied, with an attractive silky-velvety texture and a long, red-fruited finish. Approachable now, it should still be drinking well for close to two decades.

    2. JD

A blend put together by Bevan from the single vineyards, the Ontogeny cuvée is year-in, year-out one of the greatest values in Cabernet Sauvignon. His 2019 Ontogeny is no exception, revealing a dense purple hue as well as rock star notes of crème de cassis, violets, tobacco leaf, and chocolate. It’s a big, classic Bevan wine and has remarkable purity, silky, polished tannins, and not a hard edge to be found. Don’t miss it!

    3. VIN

The 2019 Ontogeny is another tremendous wine in this range. In fact, the 2019 is one of the very best Ontogenys I can remember tasting. Rich, sumptuous and unapologetically brash, the 2019 is a total rock-star. A touch of Malbec adds exuberance to the fruit, as if these wines needed any more richness. For readers who want to know what the fuss is about Bevan, Ontogeny is the place to start!
