Crafted by the esteemed winemaker Cecile Cabre at Alain Voge, the Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes 2020 stands as a testament to the family’s winemaking legacy. Nestled in the heart of the appellation, the vineyards boast an average age of 60 years, with roots penetrating the ancient granite rock known as gores. This classic wine, emblematic of the domain’s history and expertise, is cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods.

In the glass, this Syrah-dominated wine presents a glass-staining violet color. The nose is deeply perfumed, revealing smoke-accented blackcurrant, cherry, smoked meat, vanilla, olive, and exotic spices. The aroma reflects the meticulous winemaking process involving natural yeast fermentation and maceration for several weeks in stainless steel vats, followed by maturation in 228-liter barrels for 20 months, with 10% new barrels.

On the palate, the wine unfolds with a concentrated and polished demeanor. The critical acclaims echo its rich and powerful profile, with notes of sweet black cherry, singed tobacco, wood spice, mulled plum, and a distinct iron spine. The tannins, though not overly grippy, suggest a wine that demands patience for its tightly wound layers to unfurl fully. With an aging potential of 20 years, this Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes 2020 is a thrilling expression of the region, harmonizing intensity, freshness, and nobility. Awarded 95 points by Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, and Decanter, and an impressive 97 points by Jeb Dunnuck, this wine promises an exquisite journey through time and terroir. Best enjoyed from 2025 through 2035, it is a true embodiment of Cornas’s grandeur.

    1. Alisha Shepard

Perfect Syrah. Rich, medium-full bodied with dark fruit, earthiness, and acidity. Powerful yet elegant. Great alone or with food. Will buy again.

    2. Linda Berry

Silky and medium-bodied with dark fruit, spice, and earthy notes, resolved tannins and dried herb flavors.

    3. John Bramblett

Impeccably structured and balanced, this Voge VV has a medium body with modern styling. Notes of blackberries, blueberries, bramble, and unami flavors with a peppery and forest finish. Notably saline and enjoyable with a fine long finish.

    4. Richard Smith

Review: Dark red and black fruit aromas with smoke, brett, and spice. Blackberries and raspberries on the palate with a slightly prickly tannin. Best to wait until 2026 to open.

    5. Jennifer Bentley

Young and compact, with a polished palate and hints of dark fruit and farmyard. Wait until 2028 to fully appreciate. 92-95.

    6. Jamie Hardy

Dark red with cherry, chocolate, and tobacco notes. Closed now, but worth revisiting in 10 years. Enjoyed with steak at Le Bon Georges in Paris.

    7. Chad Mccoy

Exquisite dark purple with a stunning acidity. Concentrated with fresh blackberry and blueberry flavors combined with tobacco and coffee. A top Cornas’ producer, it will last for decades.

    8. Joe Price

Flat and unremarkable, needs a few years to mature.

    9. Nakia Routzahn

Superb wine with prominent oak, intense fruit, and serious notes of leather and pipe tobacco. Powerful, full of personality and potency.

    10. Krystal Weis

Nose: classic stink, hidden fruit. Needs 4+ hours to reveal complexity. Perfect with stinky cheese.

    11. June Coley

Complex nose of balsamic and leather, with dark fruit and pekmez notes in the mouth. Enjoyable with Compline burger. Ageability uncertain.

    12. Karen Telleria

Great Cornas, pure and true to its roots. Needs decanting for an hour. Early maturity, slight gamey funk on the nose.

    13. David Mccabe

      Wine is corked.

    14. Deborah Dean

Rustic, dark, roasted, manly. Fresh bottle. #Saint-Peray #Bistro de la Gare

    15. Deirdre Martinez

Young wine with firm acidity and potential for evolution. Good, but still holding back on its charms. Give it five more years. 91/100.

    16. Tyler Clark

      Good wine, not my style.

    17. Karen Perez

Funky on opening, borderline barnyard. Improved after an hour, but still not as great as other bottles.

    18. Manuel Peyton

Young, vibrant wine with classic Cornas notes of blue gamey fruit and impeccable balance. Coravined in 1 week, best glasses were the last 2.

    19. Carleen Stapleton

Purple color. Bouquet of orchard fruit and spring flowers. Palate has purple fruit, red fruit, dark chocolate, freshly cut flowers, mint cream, a balanced finish of chocolate covered cherries and velvet. Super complex. Touch closed but 96/100 potential.

    20. Rosa Kubo

Excellent balance of ripe black fruit in a medium-bodied wine. Will age well for 10 years for tertiary complexity.

    21. Melissa Todd

Review: Tight at first, but improves with 90 mins in decanter. Nicely layered with dark fruit core, earthy minerality, and velvety tannins. Needs more complexity for 95+ pts. Decant for 3 hours.

    22. Linda Rubino

Improved with air, umami mushroom flavor with mild underripe blackberries. Best paired with food.

    23. Virginia Tinker

Juicy Syrah with blackberry, fruitcake and orange peel aroma. Firm tannins and long finish. 92++.

    24. William Hines

Refined and balanced, with cured meat and black olives intact. Best to drink now, paired with V Paris G60 2009.

    25. Eloise Gilbert

Traditional Cornas with strong, proper, and deep umami notes. Young and tight with a subtle olive tapenade flavor. Not flashy, but really nice.

    26. Sonia Tijerina

      Love this wine. So good.

    27. Miguel Smith

      Excellent.

    28. Gail Vanduyn

Complex and powerful with black cherry and plum notes. Coarse at first, but smoother after an hour. Would have been better after two hours.

    29. Kimberly Patel

Great BBQ wine with pure red raspberry, blueberry, and tart blackberry notes. Subtle hints of white pepper, lavender, and garrigue with a rocky minerality. Light on the mid palate. Perfect for Korean ribs.

    30. Kimberly Denning

Acker Pre-Auction September 2022 (Redbury Lounge): Disappointing, too much oak, not my style.

    31. Sue Kun

Smooth and structured, with a pleasant finish. Score: 93.

    32. Derrick Dawson

      Versatile wine, decanting optional.

    33. Guadalupe Powell

Dense and rich with powerful black fruit smell. Soft tannins for its age. Excellently polished, though could be fresher.

    34. Cassandra Bennett

Sophisticated wine, with bright purple fruit, perfumed flowers, and dusty notes. Plush palate of deep, dark fruit with a wild finish of boysenberry, damson plum, tart unripe cherry, wet soil, and slate.

    35. Brenda Kirk

      Excellent now, perfect to drink.

    36. Michael Hicks

Great potential, primary notes still brooding. Tannins slowly easing, wait for next bottle. Excellent Cornas.

    37. Larisa Koerner

      Decent, but past its prime.

    38. Ana Mcspadden

Voge Cornas VV is superbly concentrated with a velvety tannic structure, well-balanced medium acidity, and a spicy earthy finish. Pure and super-elegant.

    39. Deloris Castillo

Medium bodied, modern styling. Woody at PnP but with 8 hours of slow ox it begins to show those rich Cornas berries, garrigue, fresh leather, and hints of game., Cursing it during dinner for not living up to so many prior vintages of Voge VV, but after the meal was done I take it all back: supple, impeccably balanced, soft lace-like tones that enrapture your mind and palate. Don’t have it with food – that is folly. It’s too intricate and delicate to battle proteins and lipids. This is to be enjoyed on its own., Will likely wait 4 years (~2027) to continue digging into my case. It’s not ready yet though with enough air (min 8 hours slow ox) it can be enjoyed., Day 2: machine vacuumed overnight; has turned beautifully old school rustic, with a sense of aged oak you’d find in Bdx from the 80s, and an extremely drying finish. Still forming itself, all the pieces are there. Hold.

    40. Russell Magee

WIML92: Dark garnet to purple color. Nose of barnyard, plums, and cherries. Flavors of cherries, berries, and raspberries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full-bodied. Drink now.

    41. Edgar Olson

Truly a wonderful Cornas. Yes it is tannic and tightly wrapped, but still shows oodles of dark olive and blackberry fruit aromas and flavors. Seems to slide over the tongue in the mouth. This will age for years and years, but if you can’t wait, it is still impressive at this tender young age. And this is from pop and pour! I immediately ordered more. At $70 on discount, it’s a deal. 5-13-17-9: 94/100.

    42. Jocelyn Carter

Review: Nose is Hermitage – crushed rock, ink, baking spice, and leather. Palate has juicy black fruits. Solid 92, but not top northern Rhônes level.

    43. Kathleen Richardson

Fruity, complex wine with animal and bacon notes. Norther Rhone Syrah’s typical nose with violets. Wait for 5 years to reach full potential.

    44. Michelle Morgan

Closed down with prominent tannins. May evolve with age, but not enjoyable currently. No rating given.

    45. Kenneth Rubens

Undrinkable. Sour lemon taste. Not enjoyable.

    46. Richard Davis

Bottle too young to drink. Needs at least 2 years. Excellent Syrah flavors. Score is based on potential.

    47. Willie Hickey

Decant for 4+ hours before drinking. Tannic and closed at first, but improves with air. Mineral and drying with notes of blackberry, blood orange, and liquorice. Wait at least 2+ years before another try.

    48. Melissa Chapman

Fruity wine, not yet matured, with a slight hint of high alcohol but still enjoyable.

    49. Marlin Rust

Deep, smoky and traditional. Serious nose and palate. Enjoyable despite its youth. Very good.

    50. Denise Moran

Review: Dark purple with ruby edges, generous nose of plums, blue and blackberries. Substantial tannic backbone with dark fruits and herbal notes. Moderately long fruity finish. 14.5% AbV Syrah. Good to drink in a couple of years.

    51. Anton Haskell

      Tannins are rustic and grainy.

    52. George Wellington

A succulent and harmonious wine with black raspberry and plum skin aromas, hints of soy and balsamic, and a fresh acidity. Refined and elegant with fine tannins and a nice length.

    53. Lillie Looney

Hold for a few years, good but not ready yet.

    54. Paulette Valentine

This Cornas is a refreshing change from the CdP dominance. It has a balanced and restrained taste, with engaging aromatics. Great with food and worth aging for up to five years.

    55. Andrea Miller

Dark red/purple. Small taste. Green/edgy, roasted meat, blue fruit, full-bodied, brawny.

    56. David Hall

Intensely smoky and perfumed. Decant for 2 hours for maximum enjoyment.

    57. Miranda Trimble

Beautiful bottle – now in its prime. Earthy, gamey, and fruity. Paired perfectly with rosemary lamb over hickory.

    58. Opal Ryan

Lovely wine with florals, bacon, smoke, and dark fruit notes. Decant for several hours.

    59. Cynthia Thorton

Black fruits and savory spices complemented by licorice and creme de cassis. Needs more time to mature.

    60. Vicky Moya

Gorgeous Syrah with smoky, perfumed, dark cherry notes. Loved it so much that the bottle was finished in two nights.

    61. Samuel Crawford

Great length, well-balanced wine with red berries, cherries, minerals, and vanilla. Juicy with mild acidity, soft tannins. Enjoyable now, will improve with age. 93++.

    62. Melissa Bryce

Young, beautiful, and meaty Cornas with rustic impressions and fresh flavors of cherries, dark berries, and sweet spices. Round acidity and tannin with a slightly drying finish. 94+.

    63. Albert Meyer

Tasting Ground’s Rhone wine pairing at Jerar restaurant is a must-try. The 60-year-old vines and oak barrel aging give it a rich, spicy flavor with hints of dark fruit and coffee. The tannins are tight and aggressive, making for a bold taste.

    64. Ruby White

Ready to drink, almost Burgundian in style with black olives and cured meat. Perfect for the next 5-10 years.

    65. Tomas Wakham

Tightly wound with beautiful dark Syrah fruit lurking. Primary with flowers and fruit now, bound to expand as it ages. Requires patience to show its best. 93/100.

    66. Lisa Zamora

Medium ruby color. Intense aromas of dark cherry, bacon, and forest floor. Balanced, complex wine with a long finish. Drink or hold.

    67. Mindy Kuhn

Aged to perfection with notes of blackberry, salt, stone, iodine, fountain pen ink, and smoked meats. A stalwart wine. Last bottle.

    68. Paul Barber

A well-made wine with a balanced blend of ripe red and black fruits, spices, dried herbs, and sweet oak. After 90 minutes of slow ox, it continued to improve and will peak in another 5 years.

    69. Irene Melton

Good vintage wine with ripe, pure fruit.

    70. Krystal Allen

Review: Smooth and dry Cornas with full tannins and deep magenta color. Blackberry, pumpkin bread, and subtle salami notes. Served from a machine.

    71. Willie Cox

Disappointing second try. Big Parker score but far from perfect. Good with food, but puzzled by the hype. Probably tasted better in its youth.

    72. Dale Gonzalez

Attractive and elegant with hints of primary red fruit. Smooth and seamless, unwinds nicely with a briar/chocolate element. Will age well for at least 10 more years. 93/100.

    73. Donald Rau

N Rhone Chez R is lovely but slightly overshadowed by grander wines. May benefit from aging before trying again.

    74. Calvin Wimbush

Light ruby color. Subtle nose and lighter palate. Needs an hour decant. Nice raspberry and tart red fruit flavors. Great with steak. Expected more from producer and vintage. 92.5!

    75. Andres Maroun

Floral aroma after slow ox. Subdued palate. Wait for few more years before opening.

    76. WS

Concentrated and polished, with good energy, this hefty red features a core of sweet black cherry, singed tobacco, wood spice and mulled plum, all wrapped around a spine of iron. Reveals incense and violet notes, and though the tannins aren’t too grippy, this still needs time for its tightly wound layers to unfurl. Best from 2025 through 2035. 1,200 cases made, 235 cases imported.

    77. JD

The older vine cuvée, the 2020 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is 100% Syrah. It’s similarly inky hued and offers up full-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries, graphite, bouquet garni, and iron. It’s deep, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, with flawless balance, building yet silky tannins, and a great, great finish. This is a straight-up thrilling Cornas to enjoy over the coming 15+ years.

    78. VIN

Glass-staining violet color. Deeply perfumed, smoke-accented blackcurrant, cherry, smoked meat, vanilla, olive and exotic spices on the intensely perfumed nose. Shows excellent depth of flavor but comes off surprisingly energetic as well, offering mineral-driven black and blue fruit, bacon fat, olive paste and candied violet flavors that firm up steadily as the wine gains air. Polished, building tannins add shape to an impressively long, smoky finish that strongly echoes the floral, mineral and spice notes.

The sample presented of Voge's 2020 Cornas Vieilles Vignes was reassuringly excellent, with gently lifted, floral scents of violets, cassis and crushed stone. Full-bodied, deep and powerful, concentrated and rich but still almost painfully unformed, this needs time in the cellar. It's a blend of several parcels, aged in barrel but with just 15% or so new oak.
    DEC 95
    Decanter
Dark, dense and black-fruited, with a dab of blackcurrant jelly among the fresh berry fruits. Ripe, but not problematically so, with a grand, noble, velvety palate. Good sense of intensity and salinity. Powerful, but lifted. Not heavy, but ripe in fruit and with great freshness. Thankfully no overripe flavours. As hoped, this has filled out well since tasting from barrel. Try to keep until 2029. From lieux-dits Combe, Patou, La Côte, Tézier, Mazards, Chaillot, old vines of Chapelle St Pierre (the same plots for the cuvée Les Chailles, but further up the slopes). Racked in May, bottled in June, released in the autumn. 20% whole bunch, three weeks maceration, 20 months in oak, 10%-15% new.
