    Crafted by the esteemed winemaker Cecile Cabre at Alain Voge, the Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes 2020 stands as a testament to the family’s winemaking legacy. Nestled in the heart of the appellation, the vineyards boast an average age of 60 years, with roots penetrating the ancient granite rock known as gores. This classic wine, emblematic of the domain’s history and expertise, is cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods.

    In the glass, this Syrah-dominated wine presents a glass-staining violet color. The nose is deeply perfumed, revealing smoke-accented blackcurrant, cherry, smoked meat, vanilla, olive, and exotic spices. The aroma reflects the meticulous winemaking process involving natural yeast fermentation and maceration for several weeks in stainless steel vats, followed by maturation in 228-liter barrels for 20 months, with 10% new barrels.

    On the palate, the wine unfolds with a concentrated and polished demeanor. Don’t have it with food – that is folly. It’s too intricate and delicate to battle proteins and lipids. This is to be enjoyed on its own., Will likely wait 4 years (~2027) to continue digging into my case. It’s not ready yet though with enough air (min 8 hours slow ox) it can be enjoyed., Day 2: machine vacuumed overnight; has turned beautifully old school rustic, with a sense of aged oak you’d find in Bdx from the 80s, and an extremely drying finish. Still forming itself, all the pieces are there. Hold.

At $70 on discount, it’s a deal. 5-13-17-9: 94/100.

This is a straight-up thrilling Cornas to enjoy over the coming 15+ years.

    The sample presented of Voge's 2020 Cornas Vieilles Vignes was reassuringly excellent, with gently lifted, floral scents of violets, cassis and crushed stone. Full-bodied, deep and powerful, concentrated and rich but still almost painfully unformed, this needs time in the cellar. It's a blend of several parcels, aged in barrel but with just 15% or so new oak.

    Dark, dense and black-fruited, with a dab of blackcurrant jelly among the fresh berry fruits. Ripe, but not problematically so, with a grand, noble, velvety palate. Good sense of intensity and salinity. Powerful, but lifted. Not heavy, but ripe in fruit and with great freshness. Thankfully no overripe flavours. As hoped, this has filled out well since tasting from barrel. Try to keep until 2029. From lieux-dits Combe, Patou, La Côte, Tézier, Mazards, Chaillot, old vines of Chapelle St Pierre (the same plots for the cuvée Les Chailles, but further up the slopes). Racked in May, bottled in June, released in the autumn. 20% whole bunch, three weeks maceration, 20 months in oak, 10%-15% new.
