Mendocino Ridge

Mendocino Ridge, nestled within the picturesque Mendocino County of California, boasts a rich history that dates back to its formation as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1997. This unique AVA sits proudly atop a ridge system extending between Anderson Valley and the Pacific Ocean, making it the only non-contiguous AVA in the United States and the first of its kind globally. Notably, only viticultural land above 1,200 feet (365 meters) above sea level can claim the coveted Mendocino Ridge appellation.

Located within the coastal mountain range spanning approximately 100,000 hectares, Mendocino Ridge stretches from the northern town of Elk to the southern Yorkville Highlands. However, only about a third of this vast area qualifies for inclusion in the AVA, and even less is suitable for viticulture due to its challenging terrain.

The terroir of Mendocino Ridge is characterized by its high elevation, which plays a pivotal role in shaping the region’s wines. Zinfandel, the oldest and most widespread grape variety in the area, takes center stage, alongside Pinot Noir, Syrah, Riesling, and Chardonnay. The vineyards here bask in early-morning sunshine, offset by the cooling influence of coastal breezes and substantial rainfall. This unique climate ensures an extended growing season, resulting in wines that are both bright and complex.

The terroir further underlines the importance of elevation, as vineyards are perched on steep slopes above the lower valley’s fog-covered embrace. Shallow, low-fertility soils predominantly comprised of sandstone and shale define the region’s soil profile. These arid, well-draining soils, coupled with the prevailing winds, create a challenging environment for the vines. Stressed by these conditions, the vines exhibit low vigor, yielding small berries with thick skins and intensely concentrated flavors.

In the glass, wines from Mendocino Ridge reflect the region’s distinctive terroir. Expect wines that are bright, structured, and laden with complexity. Zinfandel, in particular, shines, showcasing the unique interplay of elevation, climate, and soil. Pinot Noir, Syrah, Riesling, and Chardonnay also contribute to the region’s diverse wine portfolio, each with its own distinctive character.

Mendocino Ridge, with its rich history, stunning location, and unique terroir, stands as a testament to the remarkable diversity and quality of California’s wine regions.
