El Dorado

El Dorado, an American Viticultural Area (AVA) established in 1983, is nestled in the Sierra Foothills of California. Renowned for its rich history and once-famed Gold Rush, this region has evolved into a vibrant wine-growing territory, showcasing a remarkable array of grape varieties. Zinfandel, the crown jewel of El Dorado, flourishes alongside an impressive array of other varietals, including Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Gamay, Barbera, Lagrein, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

The legacy of El Dorado traces back to the 1850s, when the discovery of gold near Coloma lured settlers to the region in pursuit of wealth. Following the decline in population post-Gold Rush and the dark era of Prohibition, the wine industry languished until the 1970s wine renaissance, reigniting interest in the land’s viticultural potential. Today, the region boasts over 50 operational wineries, a testament to its reinvigorated viticultural prominence.

Situated south of Placer County and north of Amador County, El Dorado enjoys a picturesque landscape with vineyards sprawling across elevations ranging from 950 to 3,500 feet above sea level. The region’s climate fosters optimal grape ripening, with warm, sun-kissed summer days followed by cool Sierra Nevada Mountain breezes that usher in refreshing evenings. The vineyards, challenged by thin, rocky soils predominantly composed of decomposed granite, shale, and volcanic remnants, yield grapes of exceptional concentration and depth of flavor.

Thanks to the diverse microclimates fostered by the area’s varied topography, El Dorado’s vineyards boast a plethora of aspects and slopes, offering winemakers the opportunity to cultivate an extensive range of grape varieties. The wines produced here reflect this diversity, exhibiting vibrant characteristics and a balance derived from the meticulous art of site selection and cultivation. With its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and a bounty of wine varietals, El Dorado stands as a testament to the enduring allure of California’s viticultural heritage.
