The WeatherEye Estate Roussanne 2021 is a true gem hailing from a north-facing block, nestled just behind the ridgeline at a breathtaking elevation of 1,170 ft. This wine is a testament to the expertise of winemaker Todd Alexander, showcasing the beauty and excellence of high-density planting with golden and russet-colored berries that seem to illuminate under the late-season sunlight. Crafted with utmost care, this wine spent 14 months maturing in used/neutral oak barrels, resulting in a beautifully balanced and full-bodied masterpiece.

In the glass, the Roussanne boasts a captivating hue that combines the brilliance of gold and russet tones, foreshadowing the richness that awaits the palate. The aroma dances gracefully with notes of fresh white flowers, hints of grapefruit peel, delicate chamomile, and the luscious allure of ripe apricots.

On the palate, the wine’s pristine balance and acidity unfold, caressing the taste buds with layers of complexity. The citrus essence is present, as if crushed lemons and oranges were infused into the very soul of the wine. White flowers continue to charm the senses, complemented by subtle suggestions of toasted bread, adding an intriguing dimension to the experience. A lovely light to medium lemon core with a watery rim, the 2021 Rousanne by Weathereye is my favorite of the whites from 2021. Incredibly floral on the nose with notes of Meyer lemon oil, white chocolate, toasted almonds, crushed stone minerality, and bitter herbs. It’s a serious wine that will need some food at the table to come alive. Better in 2024 and then enjoy over the next decade.

The estate 2020 Roussanne is beautiful, with a clean, balanced, medium-bodied style that has everything in the right place. Crushed citrus, white flowers, hints of toasted bread, and some chalky, mineral-nuances all define the nose, and it's a seriously impressive white that will drink well for 3-5 years, and I suspect have a gradual evolution beyond that as well.

Weathereye Vineyard, situated on the windswept ridgeline of Red Mountain in Washington State's Red Mountain AVA, has quickly established itself as a notable winery in the region. Founded by Cameron Myhrvold in 2004, the vineyard covers 30 acres and is dedicated to growing Rhône, Bordeaux, and Spanish grape varieties. The unique aspect of WeatherEye lies in its meticulous vineyard management. The team has designed and managed the vineyard as a collection of "micro-blocks," adapting trellising methods and densities to match the diverse soils, topography, and exposures of the site. This approach, inspired by traditional techniques from France's Rhône Valley, enhances the character and distinctiveness of their fruit and wines. Under the guidance of vineyard manager Ryan Johnson, who... Read More
Roussanne, a white-wine grape known for its reddish-gold skin color when fully ripe, derives its name from the French word "roux," meaning "russet" or reddish-brown. Originating in the northern Rhône Valley of France, most of its plantings can still be found in this region today. Roussanne is frequently blended with Marsanne to create the renowned white wine blends of the northern Rhône, such as Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph, as well as in sparkling wines from Saint-Péray. In the southern Rhône Valley, it is also used in small quantities in both red and white wines, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The grape thrives in warmer climates with ample sunlight, making the southern Rhône Valley ideal for its growth. In cooler climates, Roussanne may struggle to ripen fully... Read More
