Wine Description

Crafted by the skilled hands of Winemaker Todd Alexander, the WeatherEye Estate Mourvedre 2020 is a testament to the artistry of Washington winemaking. This vintage has garnered critical acclaim, and it’s easy to see why.

In the glass, this Mourvedre reveals a mesmerizing, deep ruby hue, hinting at the sensory journey ahead. On the nose, it presents a tantalizing bouquet of blackberries, mulberries, and ripe red cherries. These fruit notes dance gracefully with the enticing aroma of crushed roses, dark tobacco, and wild violets. A subtle smokiness, akin to charcuterie over an open flame, adds depth.

The first sip is a revelation. A symphony of flavors unfolds on your palate: black and blue fruits, intertwined with licorice and subtle hints of 80% cacao. Earl Grey tea and high elevation minerals contribute to the complexity, creating a multi-layered taste experience.

As you savor this wine, its journey continues. Roasted berries and mocha emerge, followed by a delightful crescendo of crème de cassis and a gentle touch of burnt charcoal. The finish is a harmonious blend of savory spices like cardamom, nutmeg, and clove, carried by ripe yet firm sweet-dry tannins that linger, inviting you to take another sip.

The WeatherEye Estate Mourvedre 2020 is a medium to full-bodied masterpiece, showcasing the elegance and precision of the vintage. With its balanced acidity and integrated tannins, it promises aging potential, evolving gracefully over the next decade or more.

This limited production wine, with only 744 bottles made, is a rare gem worth seeking out. With accolades from esteemed critics like Jeb Dunnuck, International Wine Report, Wine Advocate, and Rand Sealey, it’s a true expression of Mourvedre’s potential in Washington. Mark your calendar for its release in August 2023 and prepare to be captivated by this outstanding creation from WeatherEye Vineyard.

Instantly impressive in the glass, the 2020 Mourvèdre explodes with freshness, spicy red fruit and potpourri, followed by fresh herbs, notes of pink peppercorn and hints of oak with a fantastically focused core of bright red florals. Full-bodied, firm and seductive, the palate shows immaculate weight and precision with vibrant, energetic acidity, succulent red fruit and delightful spices that sway with a refined, bold and unapologetic finish that will continue to delight for more than a decade. The wine spent 18 months in 300-liter neutral oak barrels. Mark your calendars for this impressive release in August of 2023! Only 744 bottles were made. 98 points

Bright neon purple core with a blueish rim in the glass, the 2020 Mourvèdre from Weathereye is a peppery, spicy, and delicious wine. Starting off a tad dusty on the nose, it quickly reveals additional notes of ripe red cherry, toasted ground peppercorn, pencil eraser, bitter herbs, and black tea. Medium to full body on the palate, the mouthfeel is luxuriant, and the finish ends with a bitter herbal note. 94 points

Blackberries, mulberries, new leather, savory herbs, sagebrush, and baking spice notes all emerge from the 2020 Mourvedre Estate, a medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant Mourvèdre with plenty of mid-palate depth, beautiful balance, and building yet integrated tannins. It shows the focused, elegant style of the vintage yet brings beautiful richness and depth, as well as length. There's not much made, but this is well worth the extra effort to track down and is one of the finest expressions of the variety coming out of Washington today.

This is a striking Mourvèdre. It exhibits a deep ruby color and intoxicating, smoky aromas of wild fruits – blackberries, cranberries, brambly currants – with scents of crushed roses, dark tobacco, garrigue, olive tapenade, charcuterie, wild violets and spiced incense. The flavors, as well, are attention getting, with mouth filling yet focused black and blue fruits that are intermixed with licorice, 80% cacao, Earl Grey tea and high elevation minerals. On the back, the wine takes a chewy turn, with roasted berries, mocha, crème de cassis and burnt charcoal, followed by a lingering savory (cardamom, nutmeg, clove) ripe yet firm sweet-dry tannin finish.

Weathereye Vineyard, situated on the windswept ridgeline of Red Mountain in Washington State's Red Mountain AVA, has quickly established itself as a notable winery in the region. Founded by Cameron Myhrvold in 2004, the vineyard covers 30 acres and is dedicated to growing Rhône, Bordeaux, and Spanish grape varieties. The team has designed and managed the vineyard as a collection of "micro-blocks," adapting trellising methods and densities to match the diverse soils, topography, and exposures of the site. This approach, inspired by traditional techniques from France's Rhône Valley, enhances the character and distinctiveness of their fruit and wines. Under the guidance of vineyard manager Ryan Johnson, who... Read More
Mourvedre, also recognized as Mataro or Monastrell in different regions, is a red wine grape variety with a rich history and a unique character. It thrives in various wine-producing areas around the world, including France, Spain, the United States, Australia, and South Africa. Mourvedre is not only used to create varietal red wines but is also a key component in popular "GSM" blends alongside Grenache and Syrah. Additionally, it finds its way into rosé wines and fortified port-style wines. The success of Mourvedre grapes depends on specific climatic conditions and soil profiles. This grape variety craves warmth and sunlight, making it suitable for regions with hot, arid climates. It thrives when it can bask in the sun while having access to sufficient water or irrigation to produce... Read More
