Wine Description
Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2017, meticulously crafted by the esteemed winemaker Vincenzo Abbruzzese, is a paragon of the vintage’s artistry and finesse. This exemplary offering from the renowned Italian winery Valdicava stands as a testament to the timeless allure of Montalcino’s terroir. It showcases a remarkable harmony and roundness, encapsulating the essence of Valdicava’s winemaking philosophy.
The vintage reveals a rich bouquet, characterized by the enchanting presence of small dark red and black fruits, akin to those found in the highly acclaimed Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano. Accompanied by nuanced hints of plum and crushed rose petals, and delicate traces of cinnamon, it mirrors the sophistication of the Brunello di Montalcino Madonna del Piano, another celebrated offering from Valdicava.
On the palate, this wine unfolds with a taut and savory allure, displaying an exceptional structure and a velvety texture. The tannins seamlessly integrate into the fruit, culminating in an impeccably polished, enduring finish. This characteristic is a hallmark of the Valdicava wine range, renowned for its elegantly structured profiles.
Earning critical acclaim, Wine Spectator awards 91 points, celebrating the wine’s dense plum and cherry compote flavors, accented by subtle nuances of green olive and sage. These are underpinned by firm, dusty tannins, and conclude with lingering notes of iron and tobacco. Similarly, Wine Advocate bestows 94 points, highlighting the wine’s soft level of vintage ripeness. This ripeness elegantly translates into nuances of dried strawberry and cooked cherry, balanced by the wine’s inherent acidity and overall bouquet clarity – a feature prominently showcased in the Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano.
James Suckling, awarding 95 points, praises the wine’s intense floral and dark cherry aromas. He notes its full-bodied and firm character, supported by chewy yet polished tannins, leading to a succulent and fruit-driven finish that is impeccably balanced and framed. This level of quality and balance is what aficionados have come to expect from Valdicava Brunello wines.
In summary, Valdicava Brunello Di Montalcino 2017 is more than just a wine; it is an embodiment of elegance and sophistication, reflecting the distinct identity of the Valdicava estate. Valdicava Brunello presents plum and cherry compote flavors are shaded by hints of green olive and sage in this dense red, which is backed by firm, dusty tannins, ending with lingering notes of iron and tobacco. Best from 2024 through 2038.

The 2017 vintage of Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino shows a soft level of vintage ripeness that translates into dried strawberry or cooked cherry. These nuances are delicate and fine, however, and they are mitigated by the wine’s acidity and the general clarity of the bouquet. Compared to past vintages, this 2017 is more accessible, but Valdicava has never been short on elegance or pedigree. Even that accessibility I mention is relative, because these wines have an excellent track record for longevity despite vintage variation.

Intense aromas of flowers and dark cherries. Valdicava Brunello is perfumed and bright for the vintage. Full-bodied and firm with chewy yet polished tannins and a succulent and fruity finish that is in line and framed.
