Wine Description

In the heart of Tuscany, where tradition and innovation dance harmoniously, Tenuta San Guido presents its 2021 Le Difese, a testament to the region’s rich winemaking heritage. Breaking from the usual 70/30 Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese blend, this vintage takes a daring 55% Sangiovese approach. Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, the third-generation steward of Tenuta San Guido, made this choice to enhance the wine’s local Tuscan character and ensure its early drinkability, providing a welcoming entry into the world of Tenuta San Guido.

In the glass, the Le Difese 2021 is a vibrant, vivacious red, immediately catching the eye. It exudes an alluring bouquet of crushed red berries, rose petals, lavender, spice, and sweet pipe tobacco. This wine, as Vinous notes with 91 points, is medium-bodied and wonderfully layered, showcasing an impeccable balance. It possesses a classic charm and an energy driven by the Sangiovese, making it a true embodiment of Tuscan tradition.

Decanter, awarding 91 points, praises the wine for its bright, vibrant array of red, black, and blue fruits. The tannins, finely grained, complement notes of wood and chocolate. Le Difese 2021 is a juicy, tangy, and crunchy delight, with a perfect interplay of ripeness and acidity. It’s a true reflection of Tenuta San Guido’s mastery in crafting wines that beautifully encapsulate the spirit of the land.

Le Difese Toscana 2021, with its nod to local character and the elegance of its roots, stands as a remarkable testament to the winemaking prowess of Carlo Paoli and Tenuta San Guido. This wine is a vibrant celebration of Tuscany’s enduring charm and a promise of enjoyment for years to come.

Critical Acclaim

DEC 91
Decanter
Le Difese in 2021 sports a majority of Sangiovese – 55% – in a break from the traditional 70/30 split in favour of Cabernet Sauvignon. Third-generation at Tenuta San Guido, Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, explained that this decision was made to enhance the wine's 'local Tuscan' character, and to improve its drinkability early on as 'a first step into the Tenuta San Guido world.' While the Cabernet is grown on the estate, the Sangiovese is sourced, as always, from long–term partners based in Chianti Rufina. Bright, incredibly vibrant red, black and blue fruits introduce subtle, finely grained tannins with notes of wood and chocolate. It's at once juicy, tangy and crunchy, with good ripeness and great acidity. Matured for eight months in used barriques. (JB)
VIN 91
Vinous
The 2021 Le Difese is redolent of crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, lavender, spice and sweet pipe tobacco. Medium in body yet nicely layered, the 2021 is impeccably balanced. It is also a sheer delight to taste at this early stage. In many vintages, Le Difese is a fruity, forward wine, but the 2021 has a nervy feeling of classicism that is hugely appealing. It's one of my favorite recent vintages. As it has been for some time, Le Difese is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate and Sangiovese purchased from several properties in Chianti Classico, with the energy of Sangiovese very much driving the feel in this vintage. The grapes are harvested just before full ripeness, ensuring finesse, fragrance, and lower alcohol levels. Following a two-week fermentation in stainless steel... Read More
The Cabernet - Sangiovese blend represents a compelling fusion of Italian winemaking tradition and the innovative spirit of the 20th century. Originating in the picturesque vineyards of Tuscany, this combination marries the indigenous Sangiovese grape with Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, creating wines that have become iconic in the world of Italian winemaking. Sangiovese, the heart and soul of many Italian wines, brings its distinctive black-cherry and wild-berry flavors to the blend. This grape variety is celebrated in revered wines like Brunello di Montalcino and the classic Chianti. On the other hand, Cabernet Sauvignon, a native of Bordeaux, found its way to Italy in the 19th century, particularly in Piedmont and Friuli-Venezia Giulia during the... Read More

Toscana IGT, the renowned Italian wine region, stands as a symbol of freedom and innovation in the world of winemaking. Located in the heart of Tuscany, it encompasses all ten provinces of this historic region, granting winemakers the artistic license to create a wide spectrum of wines.

The history of Toscana IGT is deeply intertwined with the rebel spirit of Italian winemakers in the 1960s. Dissatisfied with the rigid regulations of the newly introduced DOC system, these vintners chose individuality and quality over conformity. Their defiance led to the birth of the "Super Tuscan" wines, characterized... Read More
