Wine Description

Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 2021 is a remarkable expression of Carneros-grown Chardonnay, skillfully crafted by winemaker Elias Fernandez of Shafer Vineyards. This single-vineyard wine is sourced from small-clustered clones of grapes that are carefully selected for their low yields and distinct flavors. The winery’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in the vineyard’s name, Red Shoulder Ranch, paying homage to the Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey that contribute to their eco-friendly farming practices.

In the glass, the 2021 vintage captivates with its radiant and elegant presence. Its color, reminiscent of golden straw, sets the stage for a captivating sensory experience. As the aromas waft from the glass, one is greeted by the enticing scents of melon, honeysuckle, apricot, pineapple, and flint. These harmonious notes intertwine seamlessly, creating an olfactory symphony.

On the palate, this Chardonnay unveils a graceful dance of flavors. Energized fruit acidity takes the spotlight, infusing the wine with a lively mouthfeel. Vivid green apple and lemon zest flavors grace the palate, accompanied by a snappy finish. Subtle oak nuances play a supportive role, remaining secondary and allowing the fruit to shine. The absence of malolactic fermentation ensures that this Chardonnay retains a refreshing, clean, and mouth-watering character.

Renowned critics have showered the Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 2021 with accolades. Wine Enthusiast awards it an impressive 95 points, noting its full-bodied nature, balanced by energized fruit acidity. Jeb Dunnuck also praises its fresh and vibrant style, highlighting its lemon, citrus fruits, honeyed minerality, and spice. Wine Advocate joins in with 93 points, describing the wine as round, generous, and refreshing, featuring enticing aromas of lemon curd, apple, pear, and pencil shavings. Wine Spectator commends its impressive focus, sleek core, and vibrant acidity, scoring it 93 points. Vinous celebrates its brisk and fresh character, driven by bright citrus and floral notes, awarding it 92 points.

With its pitch-perfect balance, lithe structure, and pure, elegant acidity, the Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 2021 exemplifies the artistry of winemaker Elias Fernandez. This wine promises a sensory journey of flavors and a potential for further complexity and smoothness with time.

  1. Chad Ortiz

Luscious peach dominates with subtle apple notes. Bold and delicious, a beloved, straightforward delight.

  2. Howard Gates

This wine resembles Sauvignon Blanc with green notes, lemon, and high acidity. It is pale lemon in color, relatively simple, and perfect for a summer picnic. It was matured in French oak barrels, with hints of vanilla emerging after being open for a while. Not suitable for creamy sauces due to the absence of malolactic fermentation.

  3. William Calhoun

5-star wine found at The White Barn in Kennebunkport, Maine.

  4. Ethel Campbell

Vibrant notes of pineapple, honey, and apricot. Exquisite.

Wine Spectator
Impressive, this white starts off broad, with a generous mix of salted ripe melon, citrus and stone fruit flavors, but then focuses on a sleek, juicy core, revealing snappy acidity and crushed rock on the finish.

Wine Enthusiast
This full-bodied and beautifully balanced wine is powered by energized fruit acidity, giving it a lively mouthfeel, vivid green apple and lemon zest flavors and a snappy finish, while subtle oak notes remain secondary. Fermented in oak barrels and stainless barrels, and matured without maloactic conversion, the wine is super refreshing, clean and mouth-watering and should only get more complex and smooth with time.

Wine Advocate
Always an impressive bottling, the 2021 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch was barrel fermented in a 75% new French oak and 25% stainless steel. Boasting fabulous aromas of lemon curd, apple, pear and pencil shavings, this non-malolactic Chardonnay is full-bodied, round and generous on the palate, then crisp and refreshing on the finish.

Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch is another winner that has a slightly fresh, more vibrant style in its lemon and citrus fruits as well as honeyed minerality and spice. Medium-bodied, balanced, and elegant, it’s going to put on weight with a year or two of bottle age and should keep through 2031.

Vinous
The 2021 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch is brisk, fresh and finely cut, with plenty of citrus and floral character. Bright acids drive the profile in this vibrant, steely Red Shoulder Ranch. The 2021 was bottled with a bit less time in oak than normal to compensate for the lack of 2020, an approach that turned out quite well.
