Wine Description

Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 – No. 14 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines

Philip Togni Vineyard, under the guidance of Winemaker Lisa Togni, presents a remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon that epitomizes elegance and age-worthiness. A Margaux-type blend dominated by 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by 15% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, all sourced from the rugged slopes at 2,000 feet elevation on Spring Mountain, overlooking the majestic Napa Valley. The vines, boasting an impressive age range between 23 and 35 years, yield grapes of exceptional character and depth.

In the glass, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon displays a captivating deep ruby color that hints at its intensity and complexity. The aroma is an intricate dance of sweet bay leaf, enticing savory and menthol notes, intermingled with lively raspberry, red currant, and blackberry fruit flavors. The wine’s distinctive character arises from its skillful construction, which revolves around acidity and grippy, tar-laced tannins. This combination imparts a mouthwatering sensation on the long-lasting finish, leaving a memorable impression.

Wine Spectator awards this vintage an impressive 96 points, hailing it as a beautiful representation of the throwback style, and recommends waiting until 2025 to experience its full potential. Wine Advocate echoes this sentiment, bestowing 95 points and praising its classic Togni profile, marked by raspberry and cassis accented with hints of green olive and thyme. The palate, medium to full-bodied, is richly concentrated, shaped into a dense, streamlined form that unveils waves of dusty tannins, embellished by delicate notes of cedar and vanilla.

Vinous joins in with an outstanding score of 99 points, celebrating the wine’s elegance and restraint, showcasing bright acids, red-toned fruit, dried herbs, mint, and silky tannins. The aromatics are particularly enchanting, hinting at a promising evolution over time. Wilfred Wong, awarding an impressive 97 points, finds the wine inspiring, highlighted by red and blackcurrant flavors, a subtle touch of minerality, and an ideal balance of concentration without excess.

The Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a wine to savor and contemplate, expressing the artistry of its winemaker and the terroir that nurtured it. An ideal companion to a well-aged cheddar, this wine invites moments of shared indulgence and thoughtful conversation, leaving an enduring impression on all fortunate enough to experience it. As it develops with age, its restrained power and finesse will undoubtedly be even more awe-inspiring, affirming its place as a true classic in the world of Cabernet Sauvignon.

  1. WS

This is very much alive, sporting a wide array of sweet bay leaf, savory and menthol notes, along with zesty raspberry, red currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Built on acidity as much as grippy, tar-laced tannins, this leaves a mouthwatering feel on the long finish. A beautiful version of the throwback style. Best from 2025

  2. WA

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classic Togni wine, meant to be laid down for at least a decade and capable of aging well for 20 years beyond that in a cool cellar. Hints of green olive and thyme add savory nuance to the raspberry and cassis shadings on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated into a dense, streamlined shape that throws off waves of dusty tannins, buffered by hints of cedar and vanilla, with lingering cassis notes on the finish.

  3. VIN

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a classy, sophisticated wine that shows the more restrained side of the year and this site. I imagine the 2019 will flesh out in time. Bright acids, red-toned fruit, dried herbs, mint and silky tannins convey finesse more than power. I especially admire the aromatics today. I can’t wait to see how this ages.

  4. WIL

I have always found the Philip Togni wines inspiring, and the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is on target. TASTING NOTES: This wine shines with aromas and flavors of red and blackcurrants, a hint of chalkiness and minerality. It is concentrated yet not over-the-top. Serve it with a well-aged cheddar and enjoy a conversation with a friend.

Cabernet Sauvignon is a red grape varietal that is widely regarded as one of the world's most popular and highly valued wine grapes. This grape is grown in many regions around the world, including France, the United States, Australia, Chile, and Argentina. The wine made from this grape is known for its intense flavor, high tannin content, and longevity. Cabernet Sauvignon is a hybrid grape, the result of a cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, which are both native to the Bordeaux region of France. The grape is known for its thick skin, which helps it to withstand harsh weather conditions, and its small berries, which contribute to its concentrated flavor. Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are typically harvested in the late fall, when the grapes have reached their optimal... Read More

Winemaker of Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Lisa Togni

With a background in history and a Master's degree in business administration, Lisa Togni's path to winemaking might not have seemed obvious. However, her passion for the wine trade led her to work in the import business in San Francisco for Boisset, the renowned French winemaking firm. But destiny had a different plan for her. In a surprising twist, Lisa decided to join her parents, Birgitta and Philip Togni, at Philip Togni Vineyard in Napa. Today, she stands as the winemaker and co-owner alongside her parents, who are also heavily involved in the venture. Birgitta focuses on the vineyard, while Philip, a former student of wine legend Emile Peynaud, brings his winemaking expertise to the table. Lisa's journey back to the family vineyard involved learning experiences from harvests... Read More
