Wine Description

Located in the heart of Sta. Rita Hills off Highway 246 on a very gentle, even slope with northern exposure, this vineyard is capable of making extraordinary wine. “Vis-à-Vis” Viognier from Zotovich Vineyard is a graceful and refined wine, a true embodiment of elegance. The name, meaning “face-to-face” in French, reflects the rare and precious nature of this wine. On the nose, it presents delicate aromas of orange blossom, white peach, and honeysuckle. Light and refreshing on the palate, with bright flavors of lime zest and a silky textured finish.

15 reviews for Paul Lato Vis-a-Vis Zotovich Vineyard Viognier 2021

  1. Mary Rivera

Fruit and mineralic flavors blend in this solid Viognier with honeydew and peach notes. Its sharp mineral finish and low sweetness complemented well with spicy chicken. Nicely priced and good for Thai food pairing.

  2. Mandy Currin

New winemaker, lacks balance, too sweet, missing acidity and refreshing citrus pith.

  3. David Campbell

Greenish-yellow color. Aromas of baking bread with hints of nectarine. Creamy nectarine taste with long mineral finish.

  4. Christopher Gilmore

Clear pale straw with lilac, butterscotch, and straw aromas. Medium to high acidity, slightly sweet with a hint of lemon peel. Short acidic finish.

  5. Veronica Lepore

Lively Viognier with delicate stone fruit and flower notes. Energetic mid-palate with occasional candy floss and melon elements. Best paired with crab.

  6. David Monroe

Outstanding Viognier with expressive aromas of apricot, honeysuckle flowers, stone, and spice. Balanced medium acidity with full tropical and citrus notes. Rich mid-palate and a nice finish.

  7. Estella Grubb

“Outstanding domestic Viognier with honey, flower, melon and tangerine aromas, medium acidity and mineral finish. Highly recommended.”

  8. Robert Kelly

    Viscous with floral notes. Delicious!

  9. Joyce Lapidus

Best Viognier I’ve had. Fruity, light color. Perfect with fish on warm summer evening.

  10. Lorena England

Bright yellow wine with a tart pear and apricot aroma. The palate is also tart with a medium finish and high acidity. Alcohol content is 14.1%.

  11. John Knight

Wine & Fire – Sta. Rita Hills is a well-balanced and vivacious wine with tropical aromas and a full, bright finish. Very nice.

  12. Jesse Notis

“12% alc, no malo, beautiful aromatics. Club only, we joined!”

  13. Sandra Miller

Complex flavors, enticing nose, blend of star anise, peach and pear on the palate. Serve at room temperature. Excellent.

  14. Kathleen Parker

Deliciously fresh with ripe pear and honeysuckle notes, good acidity, and a medium-plus finish.

  15. Rhonda Hartley

Gold color with notes of pear, underripe apple, wet dolostone, light lemon, and lime rind. Subtle, floral, and light.

Paul Lato

Paul Lato's journey into the world of winemaking is a testament to passion and perseverance. Hailing from Poland, Lato's voyage began as a certified Sommelier in Toronto's upscale dining scene. California's wine country beckoned, and in the early 1990s, he made his first visit, setting the stage for a remarkable transformation. Guided by Jim Clendenen of ABC Winery & Clendenen Wines, Lato took a leap of faith, relocating to California. Despite starting at Bien Nacido vineyards for a humble wage of $10.00 hourly, he immersed himself in the craft. Under the mentorship of industry luminaries and fueled by relentless curiosity, Lato nurtured his winemaking skills. The turning point arrived when Robert Parker, a revered figure in the wine world, encountered Lato's creations. Parker's... Read More

The wine region of Sta. Rita Hills has a rich history dating back to its establishment as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in July 2001. Originally known as Santa Rita Hills, the AVA faced a name change to Sta. Rita Hills in 2006 due to protests from Vina Santa Rita, a large Chilean wine company. Today, the AVA covers approximately 14,000 hectares (36,000 acres) of land, with vineyards predominantly planted with Pinot Noir, followed by Chardonnay, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and other grape varieties. Sta. Rita Hills benefits from a unique location at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley in California's... Read More
