Wine Description

Introducing the Paul Lato Space Cadet Syrah – Grenache 2020 – a magnificent blend that embodies the artistry of winemaker Paul Lato. Crafted with finesse and limited to an exclusive 144 cases, this wine is a true gem that promises an extraordinary tasting experience.

Radiant in the glass, the Space Cadet 2020 exhibits a deep, inky hue that hints at the richness within. The nose is an intricate tapestry of aromas, weaving dried flowers, aromatic sage, brambleberry, and the alluring scent of resinous cedar. A symphony of scents that beckon you to delve into the depths of this complex and intriguing blend.

Upon the first sip, your palate is greeted with a fusion of flavors that unfold like a cosmic dance. Incense and plums intertwine seamlessly, while black raspberries contribute their luscious sweetness. This full-bodied wine unveils layers of depth and complexity, a testament to the artistry of the winemaker. The interplay of flavors is harmoniously balanced by a bright acidity that adds a vibrant edge. Silky tannins structure the wine, providing a luxurious mouthfeel that is both elegant and velvety.

The finish is a lingering caress, with the wine’s silky texture enveloping your senses. A perfumed quality delicately perfumes the air, leaving an indelible impression that lasts. With only 144 cases crafted, the Space Cadet 2020 embodies exclusivity and promises to be a prized addition to any collection.

Grown amidst the picturesque landscapes of Santa Barbara County, the grapes for this blend thrive in a unique coastal climate. The cool ocean breezes and sea fog that sweep through the coastal valleys shape the grapes’ character, bestowing them with a balance of sugars and acids that is a hallmark of this region. The extended growing season allows the fruit to mature slowly, developing nuanced flavors that are the essence of Santa Barbara’s terroir.

The synergy between Syrah and Grenache is an artful partnership that contributes to the wine’s allure. Syrah, with its structured tannins and notes of blueberry and spice, forms the backbone of the blend. Grenache, on the other hand, brings its characteristic bright, stewed-strawberry and raspberry flavors, infusing the wine with a plush, juicy palate. This harmonious fusion creates a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The critical acclaim from experts underscores the brilliance of the Space Cadet 2020. Jeb Dunnuck awards it an impressive 95 points, praising its wealth of fruit, tannins, and impeccable finish. Wine Advocate’s score of 93 points hails its powerful ripe fruit, balanced acidity, and the long, spicy finish. Vinous, awarding it a remarkable 97 points, celebrates its silky texture, aromatic profile, and impeccable balance, particularly noting the prominence of Grenache’s influence.

As you embark on a journey through the Paul Lato Space Cadet Syrah – Grenache 2020, you’re invited to savor each layer of its complexity, each nuance of its aroma, and each facet of its flavor. A wine that combines artistry, exclusivity, and excellence, it’s a testament to the mastery of winemaker Paul Lato and the synergy between these two noble grape varieties.

  1. Darlene Keyes

Prefer Il Padrino over this, similar flavors but Il Padrino is more refined.

  2. Brigid Clevenger

    Enjoyed the wine. Good fruit.

  3. Della Gregory

Powerful blend of blue and black fruit, with hints of chocolate and olive tapenade. Grenache adds a touch of sweetness, making it a knockout. Good for another decade.

  4. Leonardo Simpson

    Pleasant, but not extraordinary.

  5. Donald Tremblay

Great syrah/grenache blend, perfect for a cozy night in with chili.

  6. Irma Donovan

Will retry as I’m not getting all the nuances others have achieved.

  7. Dorothy Mikasa

    Sangria-ready.

  8. Joyce Wilson

Requires a large stem. Rich leather and cedar box aromas with blackberry and pepper spiciness. Smooth finish. Perfect with ribeye.

  9. Diane Heil

    Great Syrah Grenache blend.

  10. Aaron Matty

Silky, balanced Syrah/Grenache blend. Delicious now, could age.

  11. James Wade

Excellent wine. Lingering finish. Slightly heavy mouthfeel.

  12. Maude Dever

Good Syrah/Grenache but overpriced and overhyped. Strong black pepper and clove, slightly acidic finish, ripe fruit with high alcohol. Crowd pleaser in moderation.

  13. WA

The 2020 Space Cadet comes from 20- to 30-year-old vines at Bien Nacido and Larner vineyards and is a blend of 65% Syrah and 35% Grenache. It was matured in 57% new French oak and concrete eggs for 22 months. Medium ruby-purple, it’s reticent then floral, unfolding to violet, powdered sugar, black raspberries and cherries. The full-bodied palate is chalky with powerful, ripe fruit, rounded acidity and a long finish with spicy accents. 144 cases were made.

  14. JD

A 65/35 split of Syrah and Grenache from the Bien Nacido and Larner vineyards, the 2020 Space Cadet reveals an almost opaque ruby/purple hue to go with a rocking nose of red, blue, and black fruits as well as ground pepper, violets, and some gamey, meaty nuances. It’s full-bodied on the palate, has a wealth of fruit, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. It’s going to benefit from a year or two in the cellar and drink brilliantly over the following decade.

  15. VIN

The 2020 Space Cadet is the star in this range from Paul Lato. Silky and aromatic, the 2020 is hauntingly beautiful from the get-go. Inky red/purplish fruit, sage, cedar, tobacco, incense and dried flowers are some of the many notes that race across the palate. All the elements are so well balanced. Space Cadet is mostly Syrah and some Grenache, but the Grenache really seems to drive the profile today.
