The Ornellaia Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia Toscana IGT 2020  is a unique, Mediterranean-style white blend crafted by Olga Fusari, the winemaker. This expression of this exquisite wine is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, Viognier and Verdicchio. A gift of nature, the estate’s unique microclimate allows for the wine to retain its elegant structure along with ripe fruit aromas and flavours. When poured, Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia reveals a bright straw-yellow colour as well as riveting aromas of boxwood, white flowers, sage, white peach and aromatic herbs. The palate enjoys a beautiful balance of acidic freshness and density while the finish is lively, persistent, and with a nice tanginess.

Thanks to the generous rain received in the spring of 2020, the Sauvignon grapes have been able to reach full maturity, revealing delicate, herbal and citrus scents in this lively and vibrant wine. The Sauvignon blended with the Vermentino, Viognier and Verdicchio creates luscious flavours of white grapefruit, flavors of crystallized pineapple, sage and lemongrass. The texture is most enjoyable as a creamy mid-palate flesh is felt alongside bright and integrated acidity. The finish is particularly notable and refreshing with tones of lime and lemon that linger on the palate.

The influences of climatic conditions can be greatly felt when tasting this wine. The cooler-than-normal temperates of the area has allowed for the aromas and flavours to be more intense and the acidity to be vibrant. The abundant rain ensured there was enough hydration to keep the vines refreshed, enabling them to reach full development.

As a result, the Ornellaia 2020 Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia offers a unique experience with a pleasing balance between acidic freshness and complexity. It is a food-friendly wine that pairs perfectly with oysters, and is sure to bring brightness to any dinner table. It is an excellent expression of Olga Fusari’s winemaking skills.

Blend: 69% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Vermentino, 5% Viognier, 4% Verdicchio

  3. Marshall Hurley

Slightly rounder than remembered, but still had lemon/grapefruit and minerality. SB characteristics present.

  4. Robert Wiley

Balanced and delicate with grassy and lemon notes. Waxy finish. A unique take on Bordeaux white.

Best of Bolgheri (EWS, blind tasting at New York Vintners): Herbal nose, creamy viscosity, grapefruit backbone, sweet oak, and melon tail.

Golden yellow with tropical fruit and lime on the nose, creamy and slightly mineral taste with a medium finish. Well made but pricey. 88-90.

Balanced with a full body, but lacks uniqueness.

  10. Richard Vines

  13. Austin Orser

    Easy-drinking with toasty notes.

  14. Daniel Tidwell

Approachable and impressive, Tement’s 2013 Zieregg offers rich tropical fruit notes and fresh, juicy flavors with a hint of white flowers and herbal character. With its spicy and mineral finish, this wine is sure to improve with age. Score: 91-92+.

  15. John Gusman

Ornellaia’s white wine is a pleasant surprise with hints of grass, creamed honey, and balanced acidity. A great food wine.

  16. William Madsen

Clean, crisp Sauvignon Blanc. Great afternoon sipper, improved as it warmed up.

  17. Henry Beuth

Tasty wine with a savory, aromatic nose of grilled eggplant and sauteed onion. Medium acidity with a mineral palate and oily texture. Medium-plus finish.

Balanced and textural with hints of ginger and sweet herbs. Silky texture with medium-length finish of apple and lemon zest.

  19. Jeffrey Swindle

Enjoyable Sauvignon Blanc with a hint of grassiness and white peach. Crisp and slightly sour. Very good.

  20. Evelyn Coates

Unusual Sauvignon Blanc, oak and lees aging make it heavier and rounder with floral notes from viognier and stone fruits. Good to age for a couple more years.

  21. Carol Knight

Enjoyable SB with white flower and peach notes, hint of lemon in the finish. Perfect with seafood appetizers.

  22. Lynn Washington

    Herbaceous and waxy.

  23. Helen Carver

Outstanding lively SB with Bordeaux character. Sweet citrus core, honey and rose petals in mouthful. Finish lasts 45-60 sec. – Esca, NYC.

  24. Joyce Diaz

Nice wine, hints of dried pear, white plums, and citrus. Lost some charm in 4 months.

Golden yellow with citrus, toasty oak and floral aromas. Creamy palate with toasted almonds and lemon/orange fruit. Balanced acidity and nice use of oak. Fresh and fairly long finish. Fans of Sauvignon Blanc will love it!

  27. Amy Weaver

2012 TENUTA dell’ORNELAIA POGGIO alle GAZZE – Sauvignon Blanc with 10% Viognier; lovely aromatics of minerality, grapefruit, and lemon lime; taste profile of ripe peach butter with a creamy texture.

  28. Carrie Henry

    Review: Disappointing experience.

  29. Mandy Eberheart

Solid and interesting blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Vermentino and others. Fruity and mineral with great aromas.

  30. Lisa Elmore

Expensive but one of the best Sauvignon Blancs I’ve had. Hybrid style between Loire and New Zealand. Unctuous mouthfeel and great balance.

  31. Cheryl Ballard

Review: Powerful, dry, and oaky. Notes of SB, Viognier, Vermentino, and Petite Mensang. No malo or new oak?

  32. Tonia Beasley

P&P, Light golden colour. Herbaceous notes on the nose with wet stone. Grassiness and lots of acidity with unripe/bitter lemons coupled with a slightly peppery finish which lingers. Interesting SB but not my type.

  33. Adam Castillo

Fresh nose with ripe pear and citrus, soft palate with ripe apple and melon, and a long finish with citrus and floral hints.

  34. Tanya Wilson

Sauvignon Blanc with citrus and green apple aroma, lemon meringue and ripe stone fruit taste. Silky long finish. Unique style. Enjoyed.

  35. Joyce Wyatt

Ornellaia’s white blend is a real treat. Rich texture, long finish, and lots of character. A perfect pairing for a variety of foods.

  36. Ruben Anyan

Enjoyable IGT Bianco from Ornellaia. Pale yellow with citrus and tropical fruit notes. Lively and crisp with a solid mineral finish. Great with ricotta and mint stuffed fried zucchini flowers.

  37. Christina Mulkey

Serious and good-bodied white wine with 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 4 unusual friends blended in. Good wood and low but sufficient acidity. Happy they still produce this white!

  38. Randy King

Balanced and full-flavored with light citrus notes. Complex with a lasting, powerful finish.

  39. Felicia Taylor

Guests loved it! Bottle disappeared at the party.

  40. Johnathan Cooper

Great wine, fragrant nose with citrus and floral notes and a hint of exotic fruits. Ample, fresh, and well-balanced with a long peppery finish. Pricey at $65.

  41. Donna Smith

Overpriced and underwhelming, lacks varietal character. Not worth the £45 price tag.

  42. Jose Mcdonald

Disappointing value. Pleasant but bland. No justification for price.

  43. Mark Berry

Poor value. Simple and forgettable. Decanting helped a bit. Better options available.

  44. Jeff Stewart

Fresh and rounded Sav Blanc blend with notes of summer flowers and citrus, and a nice mouthfeel. Not too complex.

  45. John Jackson

The wine has a fuller mouth feel and a certain richness that sets it apart from lesser sauvignon blancs. However, it’s not an “outstanding” wine and not a good value for the price.

  46. Glenn Burt

Delicious Sauvignon Blanc blend with a touch of body and nose from Viognier and Vermintino. Pricey, but worth it.

  47. Ernestine Lee

Initial unpleasant smell, improves with aeration. Decent, but falls short of Neumeister or Tement SB for me.

  48. Joni Harrell

Fresh and citric white wine, excellent.

  49. Jennifer Barer

Challenging Bolgheri 2017 vintage, but this SB blend has a refreshing palate with tropical fruits, white flowers, and crisp acidity. Best to drink within 2 years of release.

  50. Jessie Hooks

Lovely Sauvignon Blanc with grass, lemon, grapefruit, and peach notes. Dry with medium plus acidity and body. Very good quality, drink now. 40k bottles produced.

  51. Anne Hart

    Consistently excellent.

  52. Jeffrey Dore

Review: Ornellaia Monday Evening, Silo 16, Hamburg-Harburg Harbour, Germany. Dense and full-bodied with apricot, raisin, and grape notes. Not a typical SB showing, lacking gooseberry and hay flavors. **-?

  53. Connie Olson

Well-crafted blend, best for short or medium-term. Needs 15 min open time. Enjoy now or within two years.

  54. Audrey Brehm

Review: Intense nose with hints of pineapple, vanilla, and exotic fruits. A complex blend of Sauvignon blanc, Vermentino, Viognier, and Verdicchio. Surprisingly light on the palate despite the strong aroma. Good and refined, but is it worth the price? (**1/2+)

  55. Virgie Thomas

Goodmans Mayfair’s Sauvignon Blanc is a well-made wine with a soft, grassy taste, fluidity, and elegance. It has a light use of oak, if any. A solid 90.

  56. Benjamin Hall

Bright and precise with lemon, herbal and exotic notes. Great with rich and spicy foods. Interesting blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Vermentino, and Petit Manseng.

  57. Ronald Potts

Well-made Sauvignon Blanc with purity and freshness, but not worth the price. Viognier adds weight and fruitiness, but finish is short. Worth trying but not buying again.

  58. Olivia Waterfall

Flexible Sauvignon Blanc with nice acidity, lemon, and herbal notes. Paired well with pea soup, potatoes, and bacon.

  59. Seth Vela

Well-made wine with honeydew color, herbaceous notes, and good acidity. Tastes like tomato vines and lemon zest with a round body and long finish. Best paired with food. Not my favorite varietal. Cheers!

  60. Lori Eichenlaub

    Yellow, fragrant, smooth.

  61. Heath Smith

Tasty, but wait. Melon flavor. QPR unknown.

  62. Paul Crane

Great balance with plenty of body. Exotic fruit notes of pineapple, citrus, and watermelon. Excellent length and energy. Very good!

  63. Madelyn Foster

Delicious ripe pear and cream soda aroma, with a sandalwood bite and fine herbal spice. Scores in the 80s are underrating this really good wine.

  64. Michael Heiden

Winery visit and tasting with vintage artwork. Beautiful property. 68% Vermentino with lemon, stone fruit, and great freshness. Nice wine.

  65. Patricia Hayden

Golden with grapefruit, green apple, smoke, wet stone and beeswax aromas. Citrus and pear notes on the precise palate with a mineral acid spine. Mouth-watering finish with saline and white pepper.

  66. Jeffrey Malaspina

Opulent Mediterranean-style white blend with a creamy texture and robust fruit. Fresh herbs, mineral notes, and ample mouthfeel. Wine Tally Score: 8/10.

  67. Leonard Pickles

Fresh with buttery notes, hints of flowers and petroleum. Opens up after 30-60 minutes. Would buy again.

  68. Mary Grandberry

Ornellaia’s “second” white wine, Poggio Alle Gazze Dell’Ornellaia, is a crisp and fresh Sauvignon Blanc blend with citrus and white fruit notes. Only 350 cases produced.

  69. Eugene Peterson

Private lunch with friends – Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL. 78% Sauvignon Blanc, 16% Vermentino, 6% Verdicchio, aged in oak/steel/concrete, non-malo, bright fruit, citrus/tropical fruit, good weight, crisp/minerally, lovely minerality on the finish.

  70. Theresa Mortensen

“Classic Sauvignon Blanc nose and flavor profile. A delightful surprise that can compete with good Sancerre, but with a higher price tag.”

  71. Desmond Morrow

Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino blend with restrained aromatics. Enjoyable but not worth buying again due to low QPR.

  72. Nannie Parra

Intriguing, exotic wine with weight, moderate acidity, and strong sulphur. Paired with Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume. Blind tasted, didn’t identify as Sauvignon Blanc nor same grape. Thanks to David.

  73. Timothy Quincel

Grassy nose with hints of fume blanc, enjoyed by all.

  74. Judith Butler

Tropical aroma followed by petrol scent.

  75. Sarah Small

Italian blend with fruity, fresh minerality and lemon hints. Perfect for seafood and oysters. Ideal for hot days in Bolgheri.

  76. WA

The Ornellaia 2020 Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia is a delightfully fresh and tonic white blend made primarily with Sauvignon Blanc supplemented by Vermentino and Viognier. It pours from the bottle with crystalline luminosity and displays a full range of varietal flavors from lime to lemon grass, white flower and acacia. Despite the hot growing season, the wine’s acidity is vibrant and bright.

  77. DEC

Lovely refined aromas, elderflower, peach, apricot, some white flowers and gently bitter orange rind. I love the texture here, smooth and succulent, a very satisfying weight – bright with such aromatic intensity. Body and texture here, a good food wine, with acidity giving lemon and lime touches and a clarity left on the tongue towards the finish. Very appealing.

  78. JD

The 2020 Poggio Alle Gazze Dell’Ornellaia is 69% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Vermentino, 5% Viognier, and the rest Verdicchio, and there are just 350 cases produced. It’s a lively, vibrant white that brings solid richness and depth, with medium-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe lemon zest, melon, sappy green herbs, and a subtle, earthy, chalky mineral component that makes this more than a simple, refreshing white. Nicely concentrated, it has plenty of mid-palate flesh, bright, almost racy, yet integrated acidity, and a great finish. It’s going to shine on the dinner table and is a seriously good white that I suspect will drink at point for another 3-4 years yet also have an interesting evolution beyond that. It’s easily my favorite vintage of this cuvée to date.

  79. JS

The grapefruit and white-peach character is very lively in this young white, with a zesty lemon undertone to it all. It’s medium-to full-bodied with crisp acidity and a flavorful finish. I keep thinking about oysters while I taste this! Bright and delicious sauvignon blanc.

  80. WAS

Abundant spring rain in 2020 kept the vines refreshed through the summer, allowing full development of sauvignon’s herbal and citrus scents in this lively wine. Notes of sage and lemongrass accent the flavors of white grapefruit and crystallized pineapple. Half of the wine aged in barriques (25 percent new), adding a creamy texture to complement the fresh citrus tones.
