Wine Description

Hailing from the esteemed O’Shaughnessy winery nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, the O’Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 2018 embodies a timeless dedication to the art of winemaking. Crafted by the skilled hands of winemaker Sean Capiaux, this remarkable red winetakes us on a nostalgic journey to the terroir-rich Mount Veeder AVA.

Pouring a deep, almost mystical, hue into the glass, it immediately sets the stage for what’s to come. As you lift the glass to your nose, a symphony of scents fills the air—vanilla bean, warm baking spices, and the fresh essence of tobacco leaves intermingle, promising an intricate tapestry of flavors.

With each sip, the wine’s true character unfolds. Bright and focused, it unveils layers of confit plum, blackberry jam, and the delicate allure of hibiscus. It’s as if the very essence of the grapes and the land from which they spring is captured in each drop.

But the true beauty lies in the finish, where the wine leaves an indelible mark. Notes of smoked cherry wood merge seamlessly with tannins so perfectly integrated they seem like an old friend.

The critical acclaim for this vintage only serves to underline its brilliance. Wine Enthusiast awards an impressive 98 points, celebrating its youthful tension, plush tannins, and a medley of flavors that include cassis, blood orange, and fragrant herbs. International Decanter, bestowing 95 points, extols its richness, lavish nose, and the robust essence of Mount Veeder. Meanwhile, James Suckling, also with 95 points, takes note of its aromatic complexity, firm structure, and distinctive mineral-laden finish.

In essence, the O’Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Mt. Veeder’ 2018 isn’t just a wine; it’s a journey through time and terroir, an embodiment of dedication, and a testament to the mastery of the winemaker. Savor this exceptional creation, and let it transport you to a world where elegance and sophistication reign supreme.

5 reviews for O’Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 2018

  1. WE

This red is youthful, wound-up and full of tension. Plush, polished tannins add to a weighty mouthfeel filled with deep flavors of cassis and blood orange, with seasonings of sage, herbes de Provence and black and white pepper. A showcase of sophisticated complexity, it will do well in the cellar.

  2. DEC

A slick and condensed showing, with a rich, lavish nose of reduced black fruits and fresh brownies. The palate is loaded with ample purple fruits, while the finish comes around with a typical Mount Veeder sturdiness. For lovers of a confident, forward, opulent style but also seeking a chewy, gritty structure.

  3. JD

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder showed brilliantly, with a dense purple color as well as killer notes of blueberries, pine forest, violets, graphite, crushed stone, and lead pencil. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied, structured wine that displays the vintage’s purity and freshness, building tannins, and a great finish. There’s plenty of classic Mt Veeder structure, so give bottles 4-5 years if you can.

  4. JS

This has aromas and flavors of blackberry leaf, thyme, blackcurrant, licorice and cedar. It’s medium-to-full-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Mineral and iodine character on the finish. Needs some time to soften.

  5. VIN

A vertical, soaring wine, the 2018 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon speaks with commanding authority. Red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, dried herbs, mint, iron and savory herbs build into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and texture. The Mount Veeder Cabernet is wonderfully vivid and so expressive.

Although many vineyards flourished on this mountainous terrain by the dawn of the 20th Century, Prohibition halted viticultural activities.
