    Wine Description

Melville Estate, under the meticulous craftsmanship of Winemaker Chad Melville, presents the 2021 Syrah Donna’s – a wine that has earned accolades and critical acclaim, and for good reason.

In the glass, this Syrah dons a vivid ruby/plum hue, inviting exploration. The aromas are a masterpiece of cool-climate Syrah, starting with an alluring embrace of pepper. As the bouquet unfolds, it reveals the intrigue of damp sage, bay leaf, tar, squid ink, and elderberry, painting a vivid olfactory tapestry.

Upon sipping, the palate is greeted by the ripe blackberry jam flavors, which quickly evolve into a symphony of complexity. Cracked green peppercorn, olive tapenade, ash, and Sichuan peppercorn join the ensemble, creating a multi-dimensional texture that’s as captivating as it is elegant.

The wine’s full-bodied nature is graced by ultra-fine tannins, providing structure and balance. This is a Syrah that tells a story with every sip, a journey through flavors that resonate with sophistication.

The grand finale is a gorgeous finish, resonating long after the last drop. The 2021 Syrah Donna’s from Melville Estate is a true masterpiece, and as attested by Jeb Dunnuck and Wine Enthusiast, it’s world-class. With its exceptional quality, it’s already irresistible, yet it promises to evolve gracefully over the next 15-20 years. Cheers to Chad Melville for a brilliant expression of Syrah that stands amongst the finest.

This fantastic model of cool-climate Syrah starts with extremely peppery aromas that mesh into damp sage, bay leaf, tar, squid ink and elderberry on the nose. The palate is ripe with black-raspberry jam flavors that quickly become complex thanks to cracked green peppercorn, olive tapenade, ash and Sichuan peppercorn elements.

The 2021 Syrah Donna's is all varietal and comes from the Melville Vineyard. Its vivid ruby/plum hue is followed by classic Syrah notes of ripe blackberries, mulberries, pepper, violets, and gamey meats. These carry to a full-bodied Syrah with ultra-fine tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, and a gorgeous finish. This absolutely captivating Syrah is already impossible to resist yet is going to evolve for 15-20 years with ease. It's up with the finest vintages of this cuvée produced. Syrah, a dark-skinned red grape, has earned its place in the wine world as a producer of full-bodied wines boasting robust fruit flavors. While its origins have stirred debates, the northern Rhône Valley of eastern France is indisputably its modern viticultural home. Additionally, in Australia, Syrah reigns supreme and is often known as Shiraz, gaining a distinct personality in this land down under. One of the defining features of Syrah is its adaptability to various viticultural regions across the globe. It flourishes in temperate to warm climates, where it can manifest its true potential. The climatic conditions and soil profiles of these regions play a crucial role in nurturing this grape variety. Syrah wines emanate a captivating bouquet. In their youth, they can be quite... Winemaker of Melville Estate Donna's Syrah 2021

    Chad Melville

In 1997, alongside his father and brother, Chad Melville co-founded Melville's estate vineyards. Over the years, he has assumed the role of both winemaker and winegrower, prompting an intriguing question: which one defines him best? At Melville, the notion that wines "begin in the vineyard" holds true. Chad's wines are crafted exclusively from grapes grown at the Melville Estate, giving him and his team full control over their treatment. However, while they can't dictate nature's whims, Chad embraces a life in humble servitude to Mother Nature and their cherished piece of land that houses the vineyards and winery. Farming organically is just the beginning; sustainability encompasses a broader perspective for Chad. He understands that giving back to the earth isn't enough; it... Read More

The wine region of Sta. Rita Hills has a rich history dating back to its establishment as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in July 2001. Originally known as Santa Rita Hills, the AVA faced a name change to Sta. Rita Hills in 2006 due to protests from Vina Santa Rita, a large Chilean wine company. Today, the AVA covers approximately 14,000 hectares (36,000 acres) of land, with vineyards predominantly planted with Pinot Noir, followed by Chardonnay, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and other grape varieties. Sta. Rita Hills benefits from a unique location at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley in California's... Read More
