The Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, a testament to the artistry of winemaker Andy Erickson, known for his exceptional craftsmanship. This vintage, hailing from the esteemed Mayacamas winery perched on Mount Veeder, is nothing short of extraordinary.

In the glass, this wine pours a deep garnet, a reflection of its remarkable aging process and the mountain terroir it hails from. The aroma is a sensory delight, opening with vibrant notes of raspberry that dance alongside the intriguing hint of resinous pencil shavings. As it breathes, the wine unveils a symphony of brambly fruit and the alluring essence of pomegranate.

However, what truly sets this wine apart is its signature Mount Veeder minerality, lending it an exquisite balance. The palate is graced with the marriage of fruit and flint, complemented by fine, earthy tannins that provide both depth and focus. These tannins evolve gracefully, culminating in a long, mouthwatering finish that leaves an indelible mark.

Mayacamas carefully nurtures its Cabernet grapes to retain their natural acidity and structured tannins. Fermentation occurs in a blend of cement vat fermenters and stainless steel tanks. After an approximately two-week maceration on skins, the wine is gently pressed and poised for aging. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon matures for an impressive 32 months in neutral oak, with 20 months in large-format foudres and an additional 12 months in barriques. Following bottling, it is cellared for an extra year before release.

This wine has received critical acclaim, with Vinous awarding it a remarkable 98 points, describing it as an imposing, vertical Cabernet that will only get better with age. Wine Spectator awarded it 97 points, noting its distinctive character and cellar potential until 2045. Wine Enthusiast bestowed 96 points, praising its elegance and classic structure.

The Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a true masterpiece, a vinous symphony of the mountain, and a testament to the Mayacamas legacy. Enjoy it now or cellar it for an even more remarkable future tasting experience.

  1. WS

This distinctive version leads with pine forest, sweet bay leaf and savory notes, with a core of steeped currant and bitter plum fruit, plus ample tobacco and warm stone notes in the background. The finish is chiseled in feel, with racy acidity taking just as prominent of a role as tannic grip. With range, character and energy to spare, this should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2045. 2,650 cases made.

  2. VIN

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon was just bottled this past summer. It is of course a very young wine, but possesses tremendous aromatic nuance and freshness to play off a core of huge dark fruit. Readers will have to be patient with the 2018, as it is an imposing, vertical Cabernet that needs years to be at its best. Bright floral and spice notes lift the soaring finish as the wine’s inner sweetness gradually emerges over time. The 2018 is super-impressive. That’s all there is to it.

Nose: The aroma is a sensory delight, opening with vibrant notes of raspberry that dance alongside the intriguing hint of resinous pencil shavings. As it breathes, there's an unveiling of brambly fruit and the alluring essence of pomegranate, complemented by hints of pine forest and sweet bay leaf.
Palate: Signature Mount Veeder minerality brings exquisite balance to the wine. There is a marriage of fruit and flint on the palate, with steeped currant and bitter plum being prominent. Fine, earthy tannins provide depth and focus, culminating in a long, mouthwatering finish with touches of tangy red fruit, sage, and warm stone. This palate showcases the wine's imposing, vertical structure, inner sweetness, and chiseled finish.
Food Pairings: Given the wine's earthy, classic structure and complexity, it would pair beautifully with red meats like prime rib or lamb, dishes featuring earthy herbs, or even a mushroom risotto.

Wine Enthusiast
This is an earthy, classically structured wine of great pedigree and style. It goes against the grain of bigger and riper wines. Tangy red fruit, sage and pencil shavings make for an expressive, lengthy and complex experience of elegance and grace. This wine will do well in the cellar.

Mayacamas, a storied winery, is perched near the summit of Napa Valley's Mount Veeder sub-appellation. This historic estate has earned a stellar reputation for crafting classic Cabernet Sauvignon wines and exceptional Chardonnays. The winery's origins date back to 1889 when John Henry Fisher, an immigrant from Germany, built the stone winery and planted Zinfandel vines. However, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake forced Fisher to sell the winery during a period of bankruptcy. During Prohibition, Mayacamas continued to thrive by selling wine to the Church for religious purposes while discreetly running a bootlegging operation. In 1941, the winery was reborn as "Mayacamas" under the ownership of Jack and Mary Taylor. They replanted the vineyards with Chardonnay and Cabernet...check our brand Mayacamas
