Wine Description

The Joseph Drouhin Meursault 2020 is a wine that has earned its reputation as a refined and highly esteemed offering from Maison Joseph Drouhin, under the skilled winemaking expertise of Véronique Boss-Drouhin. Situated a few kilometers south of Beaune, in the renowned terroir of Côte des Blancs, Meursault boasts a long-standing history and tradition, dating back to ancient times.

Gazing at the glass, the wine reveals a beautiful golden hue, captivating the eye with its allure. The nose is an enthralling tapestry of aromas, with notes of honey, linden flower, and hazelnut butter taking center stage. Delicate hints of chamomile and hawthorn add further complexity to the aromatic palette, making it an inviting and evocative experience.

Upon the first sip, the palate is embraced by a silky roundness, a testament to the wine’s craftsmanship. Its well-balanced weight and round generosity, typical of Meursault, are complemented by a bright burst of citrus and pear fruit, which sets this vintage apart. The integration of chalky minerality and a refreshing acidity adds depth and structure to the wine, enhancing the overall tasting experience.

As the journey continues, flavors of yellow plum and gingerbread unfold, dancing on the palate, creating an enduring and satisfying aftertaste. The wine’s extended aging in oak barrels, with around 20% new barrels from French high forests, imparts subtle notes of vanilla bean, enriching the overall sensory profile.

Esteemed critics, too, have recognized the exceptional quality of the Joseph Drouhin Meursault 2020. James Suckling awarded it an impressive 93 points, praising its classically structured nature and excellent balance between fruit and minerality. Jasper Morris awarded it 92 points, commending its generous fruit and notable length of flavor, a characteristic seen in all Drouhin 2020 white wines. Burghound.com lauded it with 91 points, celebrating its hazelnut and citrus aromas, along with a remarkably dry and saline-inflected finish.

  1. Charles Metheny

Joseph Drouhin 2020 (Av. de la Résistance, Beaune): A lovely, well-balanced wine, easy to enjoy.

  2. Michael Carlos

Surprisingly lean and slightly oxidized Meursault. Soft and rounded with a hint of acidity. Enjoyable, but better to drink now.

  3. Marshall Pardue

Elegant pale gold wine with a delightful nose of lemon curd, pear, pencil shavings, and subtle oak vanilla. The palate offers a smooth mouthfeel with a touch of oiliness and sweetness from white fruits and cream. Well-integrated, beautifully structured, and balanced with refreshing acidity.

Critical Acclaim

JS 93
James Suckling
A classically structured wine for this appellation with the weight and round generosity that we expect from it, but with plenty of bright citrus and pear fruit, something these wines can lack a bit of. Good depth with an excellent integration of chalky minerality and healthy acidity at the long and delicate finish. With aeration a touch of vanilla bean develops on the nose. Drink or hold.

Burghound
A subtle but easily perceptible dollop of wood sets off the pretty and layered aromas of hazelnut, pear compote and citrus confit. The rich and very generously proportion medium-bodied flavors exhibit both good density and energy on the saline-inflected, very dry and impressively long finale. Lovely and worth considering.

Jasper Morris
Pretty pale lemon. A clean nose with generous fruit, properly Meursault, broadening nicely across the palate, with a generosity of finish and well-balanced oak. Again, the length of flavour is notable, an evident quality in the Drouhin 2020 white wines.
