Wine Description

Crafted under the skilled guidance of Winemaker Nicole Marchesi, the Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a testament to the winery’s artistry in producing exceptional Napa Valley wines. Comprising 88.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3.5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, this vintage reflects Far Niente’s decades-long mastery in the art of winemaking.

This wine harmoniously combines select vineyards in Rutherford, Calistoga, and St. Helena, complementing Far Niente’s home in Oakville while embodying the winery’s established house style. Cabernet Sauvignon has been a cornerstone of Far Niente’s winemaking tradition since its inception in 1982. The fusion of these diverse vineyard sites results in their finest expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2020 growing season in Napa Valley saw a combination of warm temperatures, low rainfall, and occasional cool spells. Summer offered ideal conditions with cool mornings and sunny days, resulting in smaller canopies and crop loads. Heat spikes in August and early September accelerated ripening, leading to a harvest that began on September 20th. Despite leaner clusters, the grapes displayed richness, ripeness, and full flavor.

The Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 tantalizes the senses with an enticing bouquet of licorice, dark cherry, raspberry, warm spice, and savory herbal notes. A distinctive hint of wet stone adds intrigue. On the palate, this wine glides gracefully, caressing with a silky-smooth texture and seamlessly integrated tannins. Flavors of dark cherry, tobacco spice, and subtle toasted oak unfold, leading to a juicy, mouth-watering finish. This vintage encapsulates the winery’s dedication to excellence, with Winemaker Nicole Marchesi’s meticulous craftsmanship shining through. The 2020 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon stands as a true masterpiece, a celebration of Napa Valley’s finest grapes, and a reflection of Far Niente’s rich winemaking heritage.

Far Niente, nestled in the heart of Oakville, California, has been a symbol of winemaking excellence since its founding in 1885 by John Benson, a California gold rush forty-niner and uncle to the renowned American impressionist painter, Winslow Homer. The winery, crafted in collaboration with architect Hamden McIntyre, was envisioned as an exquisite oasis in western Oakville. Though the Prohibition era closed its gates in 1919, the magic of Far Niente never truly disappeared. Sixty years later, the winery was reborn through the passion of Gil Nickel, who lovingly restored the estate and neighboring vineyards. This restoration, a three-year labor of love, placed Far Niente on the National Register of Historic Places and preserved the winery's name, which romantically translates to... Read More

Nicole's post-graduate journey took her to Sonoma and New Zealand, honing her winemaking skills before joining Far Niente in 2005 as an enologist.
