Wine Description

The essence of our proud Stags Leap District terroir in a glass, the 2019 vintage produced a delicious wine of purity, warmth, and grace. Built on a foundation of lush cassis, blackberry, and dark cherry aromas, this long and full-bodied wine is apportioned with a perfume of cardamom, clove, and ancho chile. Graphite, chocolate cake, crushed mulberries, and grilled steak notes make an appearance along the way and add to a long and complex finish.

105 reviews for Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 2019

  1. Thomas Spellacy

Impressive wine with complex fruit profile and unique meaty frame, complemented by fine oak and tobacco notes. Palate is juicy and vibrant, reflecting the fleshy character with great balance.

  2. John Gonzalez

Iconic Napa Cab with deep dark berries and Stags Leap dusting. Enjoyable now.

  3. Deborah Phillips

Balanced and bold, with tangy blueberry and black cherry aromas backed by cedar, cocoa, and mint. Tannins are structured but smooth, acidity is moderate. Dark blackberry fruit tossed with tar, gravel, loam, charcoal, coffee, and cedar. A well-made and nicely balanced wine with refinement and finesse.

  4. Robert Maynard

The cork crumbled but the wine was saved. 2018 Rhys Alpine Chard is delightful, and Poetry is even better with a clean, complex flavor. Enjoy with cheese, filet mignon, or pasta. Drink or hold, but it won’t improve.

  5. Carol Sylvestre

Fading fruit, weak tannins, short finish.

  6. Kathryn Elliott

Past its prime. Should have been consumed a year ago. Changed for the worse as it sat open during the tasting.

  7. Janie Watson

Murky prune color. Barnyard nose. Light tart blueberry taste. Menthol aftertaste. Full-bodied with short finish. Past its peak.

  8. Geneva Chapa

“Tynan’s wine – Black fruit and earthy notes. Needs air if opening now or wait a few years. Give it time.”

  9. Ruth Valdez

Spring 2022 Dream Napa Trip; 4/11/2022-4/12/2022, : I agree with most of the TNs on this wine. Needs time. I now understand Cliff Lede wines more, knowing that Tynan is part of the program. I will have to seek these out a bit more now.

  10. Lula Otto

Deceptive at first, but shines after 6-7 hours of air. A black fruited beauty with great acidity and backbone. Give it the air it deserves.

  11. Jeffrey Fredrick

Review: This wine has the potential to be a rock star, but it’s not ready yet. Decant for 4+ hours before drinking. Hold onto it for 5+ years before opening.

  12. Joseph Lafleur

Weightier with a longer finish, yet still soft and ready for consumption.

  13. Gertrude Parris

Wine past prime, structure overwhelming fruit, edgy finish. Nice secondary flavors, pairs well with food. Drink up based on this bottle.

  14. Victoria Felix

Dark fruit with a cedar nose, medium body, sweet fruit followed by silky tannins. Perfect with filet mignon.

  15. Debra Torres

Mature California Cab with notes of currant, blackberry, tobacco, and herb. Soft cork required Durand but wine was well-preserved.

  16. Alma Petrey

Vibrant fruit, alive Stags Leap Cabernet.

  17. Louise Carpenter

Rock Block Series: Powerful and stiff, needs time to open up.

  18. John Wade

Lively, pure ripe blackberry and red fruit with a punchy and young taste.

  19. Leslie Gwinn

Dark magenta color with cherry, chocolate, eucalyptus, nutmeg, anise, and tobacco on the nose. Smooth, dry palate, with firm tannins on a long finish. Needed an hour to shine.

  20. Carl Mccormick

Unfair and forced to buy mediocre $150 wine from Clif Lede wine subscription. Overpriced.

  21. William Amsden

2018 Magic Nights from Rock Block: dark fruit notes complemented by cedar, spice, and mineral notes with medium intensity. Needs at least 3-5 years in the bottle. A step up from other Cliff Lede wines in complexity, concentration, and intensity. Good value for its quality.

  22. Peter Pyle

Notes of mint, raspberry, and cherry complemented by cassis. Inky violet color consistent to edge. 5+ years of aging potential.

  23. Joseph Kolb

Ready to drink now, took less than an hour to open up. Perfect for those who like big and burly cabs.

  24. Joseph Kuehnert

Stag’s Leap wine, rich, smooth, full-bodied. Wish I had more than 2 bottles.

  25. Mark Masten

Lush and inviting with currant, plum, tobacco, and mint aromas. Refined tannins and vibrant acidity. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 21 months in 74% new French oak.

  26. Erin Freeman

Disappointing Stag’s Leap, good bones, but hard as a rock. All structure, no lush character yet.

  27. Sophia Aguiar

Deep purple with an aromatic nose of blackberry, plum and cherry. Currant and sweet cranberry on the palate, with a long finish and moderate plus acidity. Delicious.

  28. Aaron Cloud

Medium-bodied blend with a strong core of black raspberry and cherry flavors. Tarragon and sage undercurrents lead to a finish of cherries with white pepper. Tannins are present but not overpowering.

  29. Curtis Hartwell

    Refer to 11/25/21 notes.

  30. Rachel Luong

2019 bottle’s successor lives up to expectations. Dark purple color with sweet dark fruit nose like blackberry pie. Rich, smooth and approachable despite youth. Dark fruits like black cherry, plum and blackberry dominate with hints of vanilla and maybe coconut. Score of 93, not complex, but delicious. Best drunk at 6-10 years of age. I would buy a couple more even at $90.

  31. Anthony Clarke

After a delightful dinner at a Thai restaurant we went back to my friend’s house where he unleashed this beauty. I sniffed and tasted the wine blind- there was no mistaking its origin. I did not take notes but needless to say the initial whiff of aromas gave this Napa Cabernet Sauvignon away. Rich, ripe black berries, Stags Leap earthy dust, menthol, vanilla and spice. The palate was dry and full bodied. Bright California sunshine was evident in the fruit- as were the dusty notes I got on the nose. Tannins were super smooth and well integrated. The acidity was medium and well balanced. The finish on this $75 bottle was long and delicious. A 93 point wine that gets 5 stars from me. You could pair it with a variety of meat dishes but then again you could just sip it and enjoy its purity. Drink till 2030. , https://wp.me/p125DB-2Nl

  32. Richard Campbell

Dark and tannic, this wine needs patience, but rewards with silky fruit and rounded tannins. Good value at $62.

  33. Samantha Kroeger

Deep, dark magenta. Notes of blackberry, boysenberry, vanilla bean, orange rind, and sarsaparilla. Full-bodied, dry, and brambly palate with effervescent acidity. Youthful with lower intensity tannins. Improves with time.

  34. Vesta Loper

    Relocation

  35. Wendy Green

Great aging potential. Dark flavors, nice complexity. Fruit better than last bottle. Good backbone, long spicy finish.

  36. Jim Scull

“Delightful wine with rich fruit and mellow tannins. Ready to drink now or keep for a few years. Cheers!”

  37. Moira Huerta

Ruby red with plush mouthfeel and pleasant finish.

  38. Jorge Damour

Balanced young wine with bright fruit and slight smoke on the nose. Raspberry notes. Enjoy now or up to 10 years.

  39. James Harris

Dark red fruit with a supple mouthfeel and smooth tannins. Ready to drink now, best enjoyed by 2025.

  40. Kim Martinez

Intense blackberry aromas, high alcohol content and concentrated. Balanced acidity. Will age well for 5 years.

  41. Tracy Warner

Excellent 2016 Napa Stags Leap cab, delicious with red and black fruit, smooth finish, and great value at club pricing.

  42. Debra Farris

Soft tannins, long finish, mineral, earth, dark fruit.

  43. Rebbecca Hosler

Matured wine with a dull ruby color, perfumed aromatics, and a long finish with dried briary undergrowth. Tannin and acids hold the structure together; can be enjoyed till late 2023. Great purchase and a wine to look for.

  44. Mark Dunn

Superb soft tannins, explosive red fruits, long finish.

  45. Eric Gillespie

Elegant and structured with mineral notes and a lightness on the palate. Similar to the ’18 Lafon Rochet. Excited to try the ’18 Magic Nights.

  46. Thomas Reinoso

Burgundy color, blackberry and pepper taste. Full bodied with astringency. Tastes like a blend, not 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Disjointed and one dimensional, lacking savory taste. Early in drinking window, needs a couple of years.

  47. Teresa Smith

Fantastic 2012 Stags Leap from Cliff Lede. Blueberry boysenberry nose, velvety plum, Cassis, chocolate toffee, and leather. Zin-like texture with building acidity.

  48. Anna Rodriguez

Smooth, well-balanced wine with a long finish. Age has integrated the fruit flavors of stewed plums and dark jam. Decant for 90 mins.

  49. William Dean

    Nicely aged.

  50. Daniel Olney

Rating: 97 points. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Scarlet Love has hints of graphite, blackberry, blueberry, floral notes, charcoal and incense. A full-bodied mouthfeel with an incredible finish.

  51. Ricky Tate

Wine keeps improving, full-bodied with black and blue fruits, chocolate, licorice, and leather notes. Well-balanced with a long finish.

  52. Melissa Brown

Fruity nose with subtle toast and marmite notes. Full-bodied with dark flavors and warm alcohol on the palate. Dry finish with moderate grip. 4/5.

  53. Audrey Badami

One hour decant. Very deep dark magenta color. Black cherry, dark raspberry, violet, blood orange rind, tobacco, and limestone on the nose. Smooth, dry palate. Full tannins on the longish finish., This has pretty good complexity for its price point. Great QPR here.

  54. Nicholas Cole

Full-bodied with dried red and black fruit and cocoa powder notes. Grippy with med+ tannins. Pair with steak. Aging potential: 5+ yrs.

  55. Christy Keene

Young, jammy, and open for business. Excellent after 2+ hours. 2018 vintage.

  56. Lawrence Mccarthy

    Noah impressed by 2008 wine.

  57. Kristin Howard

Aromas of blackberry, vanilla, currant, lead pencil and iron. Flavors of blackberry, currant, black cherry, mocha and bit of iron. Ends with a 25-30 second finish with mocha and blackberry notes.

  58. Melissa Satterthwaite

Corked with musty smell and flavor.

  59. Crystal Mckee

Elegant and dry with intense fruit flavors. Needs time to open up. Balanced with integrated alcohol and a long finish. Excited to try Poetry next year.

  60. Dorothy Peterson

Excellent wine, ready to drink now or age. No need to hurry.

  61. Melvin Shafer

    Pretty much perfect cab.

  62. Daniel Williams

Fruity wine with low acidity. Decant for 90 minutes. Enjoyable with potential to reach 92 after 4 hours. Drink now or in 2 years.

  63. Iluminada Sanders

Excellent wine, a bit dusty with hints of spice and velvety smoothness. Needs more aging. Nose is similar with dust and intense cassis. Mouthfeel is slightly acidic but balanced with structure and tannins. Best to drink by 2027.

  64. Sarah Doak

Impressively balanced with rich blackberry and cigar notes, this dry wine offers a bold punch of acidity and medium tannins. A delightful surprise and highly recommended for a second sip.

  65. Austin Stephens

Amazing Rock Block with cassis, blackberries, dark plums, black currants, and great balance. Must try!

  66. Kristi Macpartland

PnP, Dark red fruit and fresh tobacco on the nose with just a slight hint of toasty oak., Pure silk on the palate bursting with fruit and intensity. It is medium to full body with medium acidity and strong tannin. , This wine is a powerhouse that is still drinking well. The tannin may never fully integrate so enjoy now and over the next 10+ years with a steak!

  67. Justin Hughes

Wine has perfect balance with black fruit, chocolate, and spice. Complex finish and still fresh.

  68. Timothy Jackson

Solid cabernet with resolved tannins and red fruit. Ready to drink now, nothing complex.

  69. Angela Lovelady

Great night 1, even better night 2. Anticipating further improvement. Next bottle in 2024.

  70. Robert Mankin

Dry cork stuck to the bottle. No scent or taste. Way past its prime. Huge letdown.

  71. Craig Deem

Dark ruby magenta color. Cocoa, plum, oleander, grilled lemon on the nose. Smooth, dry and plush palate. Firm tannins on long finish. Great value at $60ish.

  72. Robert Hyde

Vanilla overpowers, needs 3-5yr cellaring or 2hr decant.

  73. Maria Austin

Dark garnet purple colored, full bodied, dense and concentrated, round, rich core of black currants and dark cherry fruits accented by creme de cassis, notes of tobacco, spice, cocoa, graphite and crushed gravel. , https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2023/01/family-celebration-dinner-smoked-ribs.html

  74. Whitney Staley

Enjoyed the complex and big wine with good color and body.

  75. Pauline Kenyon

Popped and poired. Bought from BWG few years ago $82 what a bargain wish napa cabs still taste like this. Maybe because of bottle age it had such silky tannins but great fruit left cassis, cedar with some red and blue fruit and some acidity. Has some years left. A treat!

  76. Michael Mack

Dense crust on bottle. Opaque deep purple. Dark fruited aromas. Still dense on palate. Shed its baby fat, unresolved. Needs vigorous decanting. 91+.

  77. Mark Rainer

Flavors of berry, cherry, plum, anise, earth, and menthol. Medium body, silky tannins, needs 30 min to show well.

  78. Larry Northrup

Simpler than expected for Napa 2018.

  79. James Pauly

Sill holds up after 2 hours, no fading.

  80. Rebecca Stucker

Young wine, needs decanting or more bottle age. Excellent with serious upside potential.

  81. Joshua Wallace

Wine decanted for 30 minutes. Beautiful.

  82. Mary Mcgee

Silky palate with coffee, vegetal and dark fruit notes, soft tannins. Enjoyable despite being a few years past peak.

  83. Casey Tavis

Awkward wine, not aging well. Needs more time, but may not improve.

  84. Patrick Friedman

“Red and black fruit with herbal notes on the nose. Dominant red fruits with pine, rosemary, and iron in the mouth. Short finish, past its prime.”

  85. Judy Matthew

Found this on sale for $28 off so decided to purchase. I do not think I would have paid full price for this one. 90min decant. , On the nose, dark fruit and vanilla. Initial sips were oak, cocoa, stewed dark fruit and cassis. This opened up with notes of cigar box and vanilla. Med finish with vanilla and baking spice. , Med+/full bodied, sweet but mellow, smooth and refined. This was really bold and paired very well with tenderloin medallions with blue cheese cream sauce. , Enjoyable bottle, especially on sale.

  86. Byron Wilhelm

Balanced and rich expression of Stags Leap. Dark and deep with black and blue fruits, tobacco, and crushed stones. Evolves nicely in the glass.

  87. Barbara Giese

Full-bodied indigo wine with blackberry, white pepper, and tobacco flavors. Tannins soften with 90 minutes of air.

  88. Frank Woodruff

Ruby red with high tannins, plum, mushroom and stony aroma, cranberry and blackberry with oak taste, full body, coarse texture, medium acidity, long finish. Hold for some years. Nice bottle.

  89. Christopher Bria

Great, but needs time to open up.

  90. Jerry Resendiz

Perfectly aged, pairs well with lamb and risotto, no need for lengthy decanting.

  91. Lonnie Martich

Cork was semi-soft but wine is fine. Big wine with leather and chocolate notes. Poetry never disappoints.

  92. Nathan Woolard

Great garnet color, black cherry, currant, and raspberry nose. Long finish with dark cherry and plum flavors.

  93. Verna Smith

Creamy plum on the nose, luscious black fruit with notes of chocolate and toffee, finishing with soft tannins and whispers of camphor, cinnamon, cedar, and black licorice. Lovely and will age well for 4-6 years.

  94. Travis Smith

Smooth, full-bodied with a touch of tartness. Not heavy.

  95. Earnest Smith

Initially hollow with alcohol taste, but opened up with a nice bouquet and lots of glycerin. Good fruit and smooth tannins paired with Tuscan porterhouse steak. “Big” wine requires sharing.

  96. Anthony Ballard

Great wine, still delicious. Ignore the 2019 date.

  97. Donna Fitzgerald

Charming, sexy, sweet fruit, slightly toasted, cool backbone, elegant, open.

  98. Peter Kelley

’09 Napa cab has held up well in my 55 degree cellar, still plenty of acidity and fruit. Classic and smooth, with 2-3 years of life left.

  99. Edgar Honey

2010 Lede Rock Block: Bordeaux-like with stewed fruits and earthy undertones. Passed its peak for my palate, but matured nicely. Tannic element has faded.

  100. Timothy Cos

The 2013 Cliffe Lede Rock Block is a powerful black wine with cassis and blackberry notes. At $110, it’s one of the best wines at this price point. 95+.

  101. WE

Lots of ripe black fruit, chocolate, spiced oak and vanilla. Some crushed stone and wet earth, too. Full-bodied and youthful with compact, chewy tannins and bright acidity. Juicy and delicate. Long finish. Drink or hold.
