The Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard 2020, a testament to winemaker Christophe Baron’s expertise, hails from his inaugural Walla Walla Valley vineyard, a 10-acre plot nestled within the stones of Milton Freewater. Unveiling a symphony of aromas and flavors, this wine showcases a remarkable interplay of elements that define its origin.

From the very first encounter, this Syrah casts a captivating spell with a sweet bouquet of red and blue fruits. Lavender, spring flowers, and the tantalizing essence of bacon fat intertwine, evoking memories of the land. Over time, the wine reveals classic Rocks notes of mulch and charcoal, paying homage to its terroir.

James Suckling’s 95 points highlight its expressive and earnest character, with an array of peppery aromas. White pepper, rosemary stems, salted olives, wild raspberries, and licorice engage the senses, enriched by subtle hints of peach. The palate embodies focus and restraint, with a medium body and tight, mineral-laden tannins that create a tantalizing tension.

Wine Advocate’s 94 points unveil a wine of depth and complexity. Spices, savory herbs, peppercorn, and dark cherry converge on the nose, leading to a firm tannic structure that amplifies gracefully. Subtle flavors of stewed cherries, roasted almonds, and a hint of vanilla intertwine, culminating in a food-friendly, generous finish. The wine’s 18-month rest in new French oak barrels adds a touch of elegance to its narrative.

Wine Spectator’s 93 points paint a portrait of refinement, where blueberry and raspberry flavors intertwine with river stone and black olive undertones. The wine’s structure and tension find their harmony in medium-grained tannins, promising an experience of depth and balance.

The Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard 2020, celebrated through accolades, is a journey into the heart of its terroir, a sensory voyage that captures the essence of its origin and the brilliance of its maker.

Displaying a deep magenta core, the 2020 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard was made with 4% Viognier. The nose is spicy, focused and firm with hints of reduction, savory herbs, black and green peppercorn, bitter black tea, dark cherry skin and wilted flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the palate displays a firm tannic edge that grows in amplitude before showing subtle flavors of stewed cherries, roasted almonds and hints of vanilla. It ends with a food-friendly and generous finish. The wine rested for 18 months in about 20% new French oak barrels. 10,392 bottles produced.
