Wine Description

Introducing the Castalia Pinot Noir Rochioli Vineyard 2021, a masterful creation by winemaker Terry Bering that reflects the artistry of the Rochioli vineyard, akin to a “grand cru” site in Burgundy. This ruby-hued jewel captivates with its translucent allure and entices the senses with a symphony of aromas. FMW awards it an impressive 96 Points, hailing its intense bouquet of black cherries, plums, violets, and a hint of earthiness.

On the palate, this youthful offering reveals upfront red fruits of raspberry and strawberry, harmonizing with intricate notes of spice and flowers. The wine exhibits a medium to full body, delivering a fruit-forward, supple, and undeniably delightful mouthfeel. A testament to its allure, this Pinot Noir showcases impeccable finesse while retaining a remarkable intensity and potency.

Aged for 15 months in French oak, 25% of which is new, the wine exudes a softness that enhances its immediate appeal. Terry Bering, with a winemaking journey spanning decades, brings his expertise to this creation, leveraging his profound connection to Rochioli Winery since 1990 and a history that dates back to crafting Pinot Noir as a home winemaker in 1985.

Bering’s personal touch is evident as he melds the quintessential essence of Russian River Pinot Noirs – full-bodied complexity and subtle cherry nuances. With an aging potential of a decade or more, this vintage embodies both depth and vibrancy, maturing gracefully from 4 to 7 years. A limited offering to the public, Castalia Pinot Noir Rochioli Vineyard 2021 stands as a testament to Bering’s dedication and the profound character of this exceptional vineyard, acclaimed by the discerning palates of fine restaurants in the Bay Area.

The 2021 Castalia Pinot Noir “Rochioli” is a tiny production gem sourced from what is the equivalent of a “grand cru” vineyard in Burgundy. The wine shows a ruby, almost translucent color, and has intense notes of black cherries, plums, violets, and a whiff of earthiness. This youngster is a real crowd-pleaser, lush, yet elegant, with amazing finesse yet still powerful and intense. This is an amazingly well-made wine that will benefit from short-term cellaring, or a good decant, and should cellar well for a good 10 years.

Founded by Terry Bering in 1992, the winery has a rich history steeped in winemaking expertise. Bering's passion for crafting exceptional Pinot Noir dates back to 1985 when he started as a home winemaker, and his subsequent employment at Rochioli Winery since 1990 further honed his skills. Pinot Noir grapes exhibit a distinct elegance. Their thin skins and tightly clustered berries make them susceptible to disease and challenging to cultivate. However, the rewards of this persnickety grape are extraordinary. Pinot Noir wines possess a remarkable flavor profile, often described as silky, with vibrant acidity, delicate tannins, and an array of aromas. Expect to encounter red fruit notes like cherry and raspberry, accompanied by earthy undertones, floral hints, and sometimes a touch of spice. Renowned regions such as Burgundy in France, the Willamette Valley in Oregon, and California's Sonoma County have become synonymous with exceptional Pinot Noir production. Each region brings its own terroir and climate, contributing to the wine's character. Burgundy, for instance,... Read More

Winemaker of Castalia Pinot Noir Rochioli Vineyard 2021

Terry Bering

Terry Bering's winemaking journey began humbly, as a garagiste crafting Cabernet Sauvignon in a friend's Healdsburg carport back in 1983. It was in 1985 that he ventured into the realm of Pinot Noir. His path took a significant turn when he crossed paths with Tom Rochioli, leading him to participate in the 1988 and 1989 grape crush at J. Rochioli Vineyards. In 1990, Terry abandoned his real estate career to embrace the role of cellar master at J. Rochioli Vineyards. The pivotal moment arrived in 1992, when he founded Castalia Wines, a label rooted in grapes purchased from Rochioli Vineyard. Today, Terry Bering stands as a devoted pinotphile, with Castalia embodying the spirit of ancient Greece's Apollo and his inspiring spring on Mount Parnassus. This narrative of dedication culminates in... Read More
