Wine Description

Cakebread Cellars Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, skillfully crafted under the guidance of winemaker Niki Williams, is a true testament to the excellence of Napa Valley’s winemaking.

In the glass, this wine presents a deep, inky purple hue, foreshadowing the richness and complexity within. The nose is a symphony of aromas, with dark blackberry, boysenberry, and hints of mocha taking center stage.

Upon the first sip, the palate is enveloped by concentrated flavors of ripe blackberry and fig, dancing elegantly with firm tannins. The experience culminates in a luxurious blend of blackberry and dark chocolate notes, leaving a lasting impression.

These exceptional grapes hail from the benchlands of Oakville and Rutherford, with Hill Ranch, home to Jack and Dolores Cakebread, being a cornerstone. These benchlands offer distinctive soil profiles, strong root development, and the advantage of mountain shade, allowing for slow and steady ripening.

In the cellar, the winemaking team led by Stephanie Jacobs spared no effort to create this masterpiece. Fermentation in small stainless steel tanks ensured optimum color, flavor, and tannin extraction. The wine then spent 22 months aging in French oak barrels, 60% of which were new, before being bottled in August 2019.

Critical acclaim showers this vintage, with Jeb Dunnuck awarding it 95 points, praising its richness and elegance. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate bestows 94 points, noting its complexity and firm texture. Wine Spectator gives it 93 points, lauding its layered fruitiness, and James Suckling, with 92 points, anticipates it will shine even brighter with time.

Cakebread Cellars Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a true Napa Valley gem, showcasing the region’s finest attributes. Enjoy it now or let it age gracefully for 7 to 10 years, savoring its evolving complexity with each passing vintage.

Wine Spectator
A lovely wine, with dark cherry, plum, fig and boysenberry fruit melded together, picking up light mulling spice, sassafras and singed juniper notes along the way, before ending with a late flurry of fruit and dark earth hints. Drink now through 2034.

Bottled only three weeks ago, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Benchland Select is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 44% of the fruit coming from Vine Hill Ranch, 52% from Hill Ranch and 4% from Cakebread Oakville Ranch. It was aged 22 months in 60% new French oak. Very deep purple-black colored, it slowly emerges from the glass to reveal notions of baked black cherries, stewed black plums and warm cassis with touches of aged meat, dark chocolate, bay leaves and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate packs in the black fruits, supported by bags of freshness and a firm, grainy texture, finishing long and with tons of energy.

Our 2017 Benchland Select is a classic Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon expression of dark fruit, roundness, texture and a lingering finish. Aromas of dark blackberry, boysenberry and mocha lead onto the palate, where concentrated flavors of ripe blackberry and fig dance with firm tannins for a rich blackberry and dark chocolate finish. Pair with hearty stews, steaks on the grill, or fire-roasted vegetables. Enjoy now, or age for another 7 to 10 years.

Lots of black plum, mahogany, walnut and myrrh on the nose. Dark cocoa, too. It’s full-bodied with firm, integrated tannins. Rich layers of ripe black fruit and toasty spice. Better from 2021.

Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born. As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their... Read More
