Bibi Graetz Testamatta Toscana IGT 2019, crafted by the winemaker Bibi Graetz, is a perfect embodiment of elegance and a pure expression of Sangiovese. This Supertuscan is made with 100% Sangiovese from old vines, beautifully encapsulating the tradition and creativity of the winery.

In terms of appearance, the wine boasts a delicate pale-garnet color. The aroma is a complex blend of red berries, cherries, orange zest, strawberries, flowers, and sandalwood, with the addition of leathery, slaty, and mineral notes that add to its intricacy. The palate is treated to a tapestry of flavors, including juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, baking spice, and plumy black fruit, further enriched by a chalky mineral signature derived from white Alberese soils. This aromatic nuance and complexity result in a highly refined, yet intense, wine.

The linear palate is bright, elegantly structured, and well-balanced with polished tannins, which are wonderfully integrated with the fruit. The fine acidity imparts excellent length and aging potential to the wine, while the ripe center palate adds to its lushness. The wine finishes with a mineral touch, reflecting the stone-rich soils of the vineyards.

The wine has received critical acclaim, including 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, 94 points from Wine Advocate, 95 points from Decanter, 97 points from James Suckling, 96 points from Falstaff, and 17.5/20 points from Jancis Robinson. It is recommended to try this wine after 2025, as it is expected to evolve and develop even more complexity with age.

  1. WA

A pure expression of Sangiovese, the Bibi Graetz 2019 Testamatta is a wine in constant evolution. Bibi has added 17 more hectares of vineyard to the program, with 12 hectares in Fiesole (north of Florence) and 5 hectares in San Donato in Colle (south of Florence) with 70-year-old vines. The base of the wine sees fruit from old vines planted in the 1950s in the cool-climate Lamole subzone of Chianti Classico. These new terroirs bring a lot more aromatic nuance and complexity to the wine with perfumed blue flower, candied orange peel, wet earth and plumy black fruit. White Alberese soils add a strong chalky mineral signature to the finish of this elegantly streamlined and linear Tuscan red.

  2. DEC

Yet another fine year, however some wines in 2019 – although not Testamatta – lacked a little concentration. Relatively light in colour, it’s at the other end of the density scale to the wines of the early 2000s. There are piquant raspberry and redcurrant aromas and both the nose and palate show admirable delicacy and restraint. Very elegant and pure, its fine acidity gives excellent length and ageing potential.

  3. JS

Very attractive combination of dried fruit and spices with black cherries and plums. Aromas of flowers and sandalwood, too. Full-bodied and very refined, yet intense, with plush, velvety tannins that are wonderfully integrated and intertwined with the fruit. Ripe center palate. Tight at the end, suggesting the need for some serious bottle age. Very structured. Try after 2025.

Dark ruby, garnet, violet reflections, subtle lightening of the edges. Fine nuances of red berries, a hint of cherries, fresh orange zest, delicately reminiscent of strawberries, complex bouquet. Medium-bodied, fresh and balanced, fine, ripe tannins, mineral touch on the finish, very balanced, a fine accompaniment to food.

Remarkable pale-garnet colour. Delicate black-cherry aroma following on to a more leathery and slaty palate with ample complexity and persistence. That mineral element is really charming – it reminds me of the granitic touch of northern Rhône, and there is similarly bright acidity too.
