Wine Description
Bernard Magrez Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2018 is a limited production wine made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and crafted by renowned winemaker Aaron Pott. This deep garen-purple colored wine has aromas of rose hip tea, unsmoked cigars, powdered cinnamon, and cloves. Rich and concentrated, it is full-bodied and intense with a long finish.
The wine is sourced from two vineyards: the Tietjen vineyard in Rutherford and the Clivi Vigne vineyard in Saint Helena. The vineyards are located on the low hills of Spring Mountain. The vines used for this wine are 19 years old. After a malolactic fermentation in 80% new oak barrels, the wine is aged for 18 months in French Oak barrels.
Critic reviews of the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon are unanimously positive. The wine is described as elegant, refined, and full of bright, salivating acids. The notes of inky dark fruit, chocolate, leather, licorice, and spice are balanced by brighter floral overtones and redder fruit. This unique wine is one of the most sought after Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley with only 200 cases produced. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is ideal for aging and can be enjoyed from 2024 until 2040.

Bryant Pryor –
Bordeaux En Primeur 2010: Concentrated with noticeable alcohol, borderline overripe. 90-92 pts.
Patrice Regalado –
2011 Dr. Crane had more power, but still good.
Jason Buckner –
Review: Perfectly smooth and delicious. Loved it.
Edward Harper –
Balanced, smooth, long finish. Decant for 30 minutes.
Gregory Burke –
Cab was great with charcoal grilled porterhouse steaks. Tasted alongside 2010 Caymus cab; 50/50 split on preference.
Daisy Hayes –
Great Napa Cab with rich fruit, nice structure. Drinks well out of the bottle, better with air.
Kelsey Tibbetts –
Rich and powerful wine with stewed plums and graphite on the nose and palate. Velvety mouthfeel and long finish. Ideal with NY strip.
Richard Reynolds –
Excellent wine with a smooth, rich fruit concentration. As enjoyable as the 2012 vintage.
Douglas Camp –
Smooth Napa Cab with Dr. Crane juice at half the price. Dark fruit and soft tannins for a young wine.
Alexander Harrison –
Excellent wine with a rich, powerful, and long finish.
James Edwards –
Deep, dark, and traditional. Notes of dark fruits, cherries, strawberries, and hints of anise. Balanced acidity, sweetness, and tannins with a strong finish. Will age well.
Wilford Gilbert –
This wine maybe 11 years old, but it drinks like a toddler. , Deep ruby red/crimson on the glass. The nose was tight at first but then it opened up and stared showing some age by combining ripe raspberry, black cherries, and currants with licorice, tobacco, and baking spices. The palate was dominated by acid at first but two hours into the decant it really smoothed out and the tannins started to show balancing the acid and showing dark cherries, raspberries, Expresso and hints of cocoa that blended with then smooth tannins to give this wine a long cocoa finish. , This wine needs a 3+ hour decant anything less will be a waste and it has the potential to improve 2-4 points.
Joshua Rivera –
Perfect steak wine with mineral and spice notes on the nose and palate. Balanced with red cherry, tar, and chocolate flavors. Excellent finish.
Miguelina Verville –
Unbalanced and overpriced, this full-bodied cab lacked character. The alcohol overpowered it, and even storing it with argon did little to revive it on day two.
Alan Williams –
Potent. Exceptionally crafted. Lovely.
Eric Taylor –
Wine is spoiled.
Paula Kayser –
Review: Full-bodied with fine-grained tannin and flavors of blue fruit, vanilla, and cassis. Long finish with a floral note. Guessed Napa cabernet.
Bertha Budds –
“Unique and excellent California cab with Bordeaux style.”
Pat Dunson –
Wine has evolved to present savory notes, hint of pipe tobacco on the nose, and a balanced taste with mineral notes. Delicious with prime rib.
Karen Angelo –
Redemption in a bottle. Last year corked, but this year this Cab is spectacular with savory notes and big fruit. Possible Bordeaux influence.
Joseph Harris –
Superb wine, needs 2+ hour decant. Don’t touch before.
Ronna Young –
Outstanding cabernet sauvignon with a bouquet of berries, tobacco, and Belgian chocolate. Needs an hour in a decanter to settle down. Paired well with dry aged duck and dark berry sauce. One of my favorite cabs in recent years.
Juliette Gourley –
Smooth with eucalyptus notes, velvety mouthfeel. Tartness on the back with a medium+ finish. Dark fruits and blackberry prominent.
Patricia Williams –
Good quality Napa Cab with juicy fruit and a long finish, but needs time to breathe. Worth trying, but better value can be found at this price point.
David Warren –
Opened this on Easter Sunday. Partly to celebrate, though a few days early, the Cellartracker 15th birthday., Surprisingly youthful…needed a couple hours of air via a decant (as opposed to a slow ox)., Beautiful aroma, spicey and complex with bright red fruit., Be advised, lots of sediment., Drinking nicely now but can go for years. Terrific.
Donald Bailey –
Fruity, bold, tannic.
Dale Jacko –
French wine from foire aux vin – enjoyable now, promising future.
Barry Yager –
Balanced and ripe with red berries, cherry, and raspberry flavors. Notes of spice and chocolate. Long finish. Improving with age. Underrated at 86 points.
Michelle Snyder –
Kenwood’s wine is sweet, ultra ripe, and full-bodied with a lot of wood to shed. It has a blackberry liqueur, blueberry syrup, and blackberry syrup on the palate and nose. However, it’s not really my cup of wine.
Ronald Reece –
Kenwood’s mixed wine offerings are a flavorful blend of port, blackberries, blueberries, coffee beans, and earth. The medium to long finish is worth revisiting on day 2. Though some may find it unbalanced, it’s a big and tasty option nonetheless.
Kathleen Briscoe –
Delicious after decanting for a few hours.
Juliana Hill –
Velvety mouthfeel, smooth tannins, dark fruit & beautiful bouquet. Long finish. Great wine even after 15 years.
Anna Hooper –
Earthy, guilty, and delicious cab.
Angela Arredondo –
A few hours of aeration improves this blackberry and oak wine with focused tannins that mellow over time. Full-bodied and dry, not bone dry, with chunky sediment that’s almost pleasant. Not “port-like.”
Mark Davis –
Smoky oak bouquet, juicy dark berries, asphalt, elegant acidity, and a hint of sweetness make for a great wine.
Leonard Brown –
Beautiful dark purple-blue wine with ripe fruit, smooth tannins, and lovely depth. 97+/98 points.
Eddie Young –
Benoit Touquette’s Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is a concentrated and smooth wine, resembling port. Allow it to breathe for six to eight hours.
David Harris –
Great wine, decent hints of spice – probably towards end of shelf life. Cork was dry / shredded so maybe a storage issue from recent renovation
Doris Fleming –
Fruit forward with balanced tannins, but lacks complexity. Best paired with food.
Frank Denner –
Great drink now. Boysenberry and vanilla blend perfectly. Excellent.
Joyce Edelman –
Enjoyed this Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet tobacco notes, milk chocolate, vanilla, and ripe blackberry and blueberry flavors. Soft and velvety with a fruit-forward, slightly sweet taste. Will buy again.
Donald Dover –
Needs air for an hour, fridge for 30min. Black cherry, great structure, plush but not too extracted. Fruit from Dr. Crane Vineyard. Second bottle, both fantastic.
Taylor Lastufka –
Balanced Cabernet with notes of spices, tobacco and red fruit, garnet in color.
Lamar Nowden –
Classy and aged well, with a beautiful rich taste and a light texture. Old world style Cab that still has some life left.
Judy Decambra –
Spot on review, one of the best 2011 cabs I’ve had. Nose and palate were pleasurable with aromatics of chocolate, fruits and flowers. Velvety smooth and incredibly balanced. Disjointed after a few hours, but still bested many better vintages from other producers.
Weston White –
Outstanding wine sourced from the Beckstoffer Dr. Crane vineyard. Dark berry fruits, elegant style with finesse. Highly recommended. 98/99 Points.
Joseph Hunter –
Sokolin: A true delight for wine lovers.
Steve Olson –
Excellent wine with beautiful fruit expression of blackberry. Super smooth and no hard edges. A bit modern California style, but amazing within the category. Would be perfect with a touch of savory and acidity.
Tony Kolter –
Impressively aged, cork was tough, but decanting helped. Light black pepper, raspberry and cherry on the nose. Aged Bordeaux-like flavor with 35 sec finish. Outshined 2019 Arrow & Branch VHR tonight.
Margaret Walker –
Past prime. No fruit left.
Michael Janusz –
Enjoyable Napa cab, lacking complexity from a Bordeaux producer.
James Kloepper –
Deep purple and ruby, with blackberry, plum, and a hint of licorice and pepper on the palate. Aged with a 37-38 sec finish, but tastes younger and fresher. Unmistakable Dr. Crane characteristics.
WA –
Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep garnet-purple color and fragrant notes of rose hip tea, unsmoked cigars, powdered cinnamon and cloves with a core of warm cassis, redcurrant jelly and kirsch. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly played and soft spoken, it has nice fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness supporting the red and black fruit layers, finishing on an earthy note. 200 cases were made.

Bernard Magrez’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeous. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, leather, licorice, spice, and chocolate unfold first, followed by brighter floral overtones and redder fruit that develop with aeration. Bright, salivating acids give the 2018 a real sense of poise. This is by far the most elegant and refined wine Bernard Magrez has made in Napa Valley. Superb. Drink 2024-2040.
