His journey, however, began far from the rolling vineyards of California—Tyler hails from Missouri, where his love for plants and nature initially took root. With a background in plant physiology, he approached winemaking with a scientific mindset, allowing him to understand the intricate relationships between the vine, soil, and climate. This deep understanding of the vineyard has become a hallmark of his winemaking philosophy.

Before joining Dierberg Vineyard in 2013, Tyler gained valuable experience through an apprenticeship with one of the most respected figures in the world of wine, Aubert de Villaine, of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti fame. This time spent at Hyde de Villaine in Napa Valley left a lasting impression on Tyler’s approach to winemaking. Aubert de Villaine taught him a critical lesson: sometimes, the best thing a winemaker can do is to “stay out of the way.” This principle, which emphasizes allowing the natural characteristics of the vineyard to shine, has guided Tyler’s work ever since.

Tyler’s scientific background plays a crucial role in his approach to winemaking. With a degree in plant physiology, he understands that wine is made in the vineyard. His focus on cultivating the best expression of the vineyard means he spends considerable time studying how factors like soil composition, weather patterns, and grapevine health impact the final product. Tyler’s dedication to the vineyard ensures that each bottle of wine reflects the unique characteristics of the land from which it comes.
