Tresider Burns Description
Tresider Burns, a native Oregonian, embarked on an unconventional journey to become a renowned winemaker. His path began far from the vineyards of the Willamette Valley, with educational and professional experiences that shaped his unique approach to winemaking.
Burns’ journey started at the University of Virginia, where he pursued his undergraduate studies. However, his career took an unexpected turn when he entered the tech industry, working for eleven years in major hubs like New York and San Francisco. Despite his success in tech, Burns felt a strong pull back to his roots in Oregon.
In 2008, Burns returned to Oregon, experiencing a significant cultural shift as he left the fast-paced urban environment for the serene landscapes of the Willamette Valley. This transition ignited his interest in winemaking, leading him to enroll in the Fermentation Sciences Program at Oregon State University. His academic pursuit provided a solid foundation in the science and art of winemaking, preparing him for the hands-on experiences that would follow.
Burns’ first harvest job was at Lemelson Vineyards, where he worked under the guidance of winemaker Anthony King. This four-year stint was pivotal, as Burns immersed himself in the principles of organic winegrowing. The experience honed his skills and deepened his appreciation for sustainable viticulture.
In 2015, Burns became the Associate Winemaker under industry veteran Robert Brittan. This role expanded his knowledge and expertise, allowing him to work with nearly thirty vineyards and manage five different wine labels. The apprenticeship was invaluable, teaching him the finer points of winemaking and the importance of attention to detail in every aspect of the process.
In 2019, Burns joined White Rose Estate, a small winery perched atop the Dundee Hills. Here, he continued the tradition of whole cluster winemaking pioneered by the late Jesus Guillen. For three years, he managed both winemaking and tasting room operations, refining his craft and gaining further recognition in the industry.
In May 2022, Tresider Burns took a significant step in his career by joining Alexana Winery. Known for its award-winning wines and commitment to excellence, Alexana Winery provided Burns with a new platform to showcase his skills. As the winemaker, he aims to uphold the winery’s esteemed history while introducing innovative techniques to enhance their offerings.
Tresider Burns’ winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in his diverse experiences. His time in the tech industry instilled a meticulous approach to problem-solving and innovation, which he seamlessly integrates into his winemaking process. His academic background in fermentation sciences equips him with a thorough understanding of the scientific aspects of winemaking, while his hands-on experiences in various vineyards have shaped his practical skills.
Burns believes in the importance of terroir and strives to let the unique characteristics of each vineyard shine through in his wines. His commitment to sustainable practices and organic winegrowing reflects his respect for the environment and his dedication to producing high-quality wines that are both expressive and balanced.
Tresider Burns’ journey to becoming a winemaker is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. From his early days in the tech industry to his current role at Alexana Winery, Burns has consistently pursued excellence and innovation. His diverse background and unwavering commitment to his craft make him a standout figure in the world of winemaking. As he continues to lead Alexana Winery, wine enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing the exceptional wines crafted by this talented and dedicated winemaker.
