Roman Roth, the maestro of Long Island winemaking, is a man whose life’s melody has been composed with the sweet notes of vineyards and barrels. Hailing from the heart of Germany’s Black Forest, Roman’s journey through the world of wine started with a youthful dream that matured into a remarkable career.
His apprenticeship at Kaiserstuhl Wine Cooperative Oberrotweil laid the foundation for his winemaking prowess. Roman then embarked on an international odyssey, shaping his craft at Saintsbury Estate in California and Rosemount Estate in Australia. Returning to Germany, he honed his skills, earning prestigious degrees in oenology and viticulture.
In 1992, Roman ventured to Long Island, where he became the inaugural winemaker at Wolffer Estate Vineyard. Here, he fused European elegance with the unique terroir of Long Island, cementing his reputation as a vintner of distinction. Roman’s dedication extends beyond his estate; he has been a guiding force in elevating the Long Island wine scene as President of the Long Island Wine Council.
Roman’s excellence was celebrated at the 2003 East End Food & Wine Awards, where he was crowned Winemaker of the Year. Recent accolades affirm his mastery, with Wine Advocate and James Suckling showering his creations with praise.
Beyond Wolffer Estate, Roman’s gifted touch graces Martha Clara Vineyards, Roanoke Vineyards, Shinn Estate Vineyards, Cru 22, Leslie Alexander’s B&L Farm, Gramercy Vineyards, and Scarola Vineyards. Each bottle he crafts reflects his passion, expertise, and a symphony of flavors that resonate with wine enthusiasts worldwide. Roman Roth is not just a winemaker; he’s a virtuoso orchestrating the finest wines from Long Island’s fertile vineyards.
