Perrin Family Description
The Perrin Family is synonymous with excellence in winemaking, having cultivated their love for viticulture across several generations. Their story began in the early twentieth century with the acquisition of the Château de Beaucastel, a jewel of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Chateau Carbonnieux in Bordeaux. This journey commenced in 1909 when Pierre Tramier acquired the estate. His son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, followed by his own son Jacques Perrin, further developed Beaucastel and its vineyards. Today, the fifth generation of the Perrin family continues to carry forward this rich legacy.
The strength of the Perrin Family lies in their ability to harness individual talents to support their vineyards, all while adhering to shared values. These values include an absolute respect for the terroir and the soils, a commitment to biodynamics as a way of life, and a relentless pursuit of precision, balance, and elegance in their wines. These principles have guided the family through decades of viticultural challenges and triumphs.
After the devastation of two World Wars, Bordeaux viticulture was at its lowest ebb. The terrible frost of 1956 further compounded the region’s struggles. It was during this difficult period that Marc Perrin, who had purchased the estate, embarked on a mission to renovate both the château and its vineyards. With the help of his son, Marc initiated a significant replanting campaign, expanding the estate to 45 hectares by 1970, then to 70 hectares by 1980, and eventually to almost 95 hectares today.
Following his father’s passing, Antony Perrin took over the estate. Antony’s contributions were pivotal in modernizing the vineyard’s infrastructure. He built a new fermentation cellar and updated the existing cellars to accommodate new vinification methods. Antony also focused on increasing the international renown of Chateau Carbonnieux and Bordeaux wines. He served as president of the “Union of Grands Crus de Bordeaux” and the “Crus Classés de Graves.” Moreover, he was instrumental in the creation of the Pessac-Léognan appellation in 1987. Through his efforts, Antony not only restored but elevated the estate’s reputation on the global stage.
Antony’s dedication to winemaking and his profound understanding of viticulture were passed down to his children, Eric, Christine, and Philibert Perrin. They have continued to build upon their father’s legacy, achieving new heights for the estate. Eric Perrin held the position of president of the “Crus Classés de Graves” from 2012 to 2015, while Philibert Perrin has been serving as the president of the Pessac-Léognan appellation since 2017. Their leadership and vision have been instrumental in maintaining the estate’s status as a premier producer in Bordeaux.
In 2019, the family welcomed the next generation into the fold. Eric’s eldest sons, Marc and Andréa, joined the team, bringing fresh perspectives and expertise. Marc has taken on a commercial role, while Andréa works as an oenologist, overseeing winemaking processes. This generational continuity ensures that the family’s dedication to quality and tradition will endure.
The Perrin Family’s unwavering commitment to their vineyards and their craft has made them a respected name in the wine industry. Their wines are a testament to their meticulous approach and their deep respect for the land. Each bottle from the Perrin Family estates is a reflection of their heritage, their passion, and their pursuit of excellence. Through innovation and tradition, the Perrin Family continues to captivate the palates of wine enthusiasts around the world, ensuring their legacy thrives for generations to come.
