Mike Officer Description
Mike Officer, the visionary behind Carlisle Winery & Vineyards, has been a pivotal figure in the winemaking world since he turned his garage-based hobby into a full-fledged winery in 1998. With a passion ignited by a sip of wine at a young age, thanks to his sister, Officer embarked on a journey that would see him transition from a wine enthusiast to a garagiste, and ultimately, to the founder of a winery celebrated for its exceptional Zinfandel and Rhône varieties.
Growing up, Officer was introduced to the world of wine in a manner that was both unexpected and serendipitous. His sister, a restaurateur and caterer in San Francisco, offered him a taste of Chateau Saint Jean Select Late Harvest Riesling, which he found astonishingly delightful. This experience sparked a curiosity and a love for wine that would set the course for his future. Instead of the typical beer fridge in his college dorm, Officer opted for a wine rack, signaling the beginning of his deep dive into the world of viticulture.
After college, armed with a degree in mathematics and a budding career in software development, Officer continued to nurture his passion for wine. He and his wife, Kendall, even taught wine appreciation classes, further solidifying his interest in winemaking. The pivotal moment came after the Loma Prieta earthquake when the couple decided to move to Santa Rosa, closer to the vineyards of Sonoma County. Here, in the garage of their new home, Officer’s winemaking took a more serious turn. What started with a single barrel of wine quickly expanded, pushing him to contemplate turning his passion into a profession.
Carlisle Winery was born out of a desire to preserve and celebrate old vine vineyards, which Officer saw as a vital part of California’s viticultural heritage. His dedication to these ancient vines went beyond just making wine; he became a champion for their preservation, co-founding the Historic Vineyard Society. This organization is committed to protecting these venerable vineyards, ensuring they continue to tell their stories through the wines they produce.
Learning the craft was a journey marked by trial and error for Officer. His first homemade Zinfandel was a disaster, but it taught him the importance of the process and the joy of creation. His quest for knowledge took him to numerous wineries in Napa and Sonoma, where he bombarded professional winemakers with questions. This hands-on experience, coupled with a relentless pursuit of learning, laid the foundation for Carlisle Winery’s philosophy: every vintage is a new challenge, demanding a fresh approach to unlock the potential of the grapes.
Officer’s vision for his winery was simple yet profound. He wanted to make wines that would do justice to the old vine vineyards, hoping others would share his appreciation for these unique sites. The winery’s success, marked by critical acclaim and a loyal following, is a testament to the resonance of this vision. Carlisle wines have consistently ranked in the top echelons of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list, a clear indicator of their quality and appeal.
Mike Officer’s journey from a curious teenager to a respected winemaker is a narrative of passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His story is not just about making wine but about honoring and preserving a precious aspect of California’s winemaking heritage. Carlisle Winery & Vineyards, under his stewardship, continues to be a beacon for those who cherish the depth, complexity, and history embodied in each bottle of wine.
